Again, head to head matchups are not relevant for bowl selection purposes.
I understand that but going into the last game of the season, we had a chance at a division title and Minnesota didn’t. We did our part and won but obviously Purdue won so we aren’t going. However say if Purdue lost, than we would be going to Indy, the floor would be the Citrus Bowl but like I said that’s not the case. We are however, still only a game back and the floor should be the ReliaQuest right now. We should still be rewarded a better bowl as being the #5 team in the B1G. I understand though that’s now how things work. It’s more like calling up someone they know who is a member of that bowl committee and working the back channels to get selected for that bowl so head to head and being the #5 team in the B1G doesn’t mean much to the Bowl Committee’s.

Ugh, please don't match us up with South Carolina this year! That could be similar to playing LSU in 2001, one of the hottest teams in the country.

Sure but we are ahead of them in the standings, too.
Technically we are tied with them record wise and in the B1G standings. I guess in this case us beating them doesn’t mean much, so we may get snubbed if we don’t know anyone on the ReliaQuest Bowl Committee. Lol

I think Oliver from profootballnetwork.com needs to get a new job. Insulting to have Minnesota, Iowa, Maryland, AND Wisconsin in better bowls than Illinois (all teams that Illini have beat and have the same or better overall record). In fact, his projection has Illinois in the lowest-tier bowl for all bowl eligible B1G teams. A 10 year old could make better B1G projections than this clown! I did not care to look at his other projections, but they are probably garbage too.

It’s a joke really.

Record and head to head matchup aside, I am nearly positive that Illinois has a much larger alumni base in Florida AND would travel better than Minnesota. I see no justifiable reason for the ReliaQuest Bowl Committee to select Minnesota. It just makes no sense whatsoever. If they want to actually sell tickets, then it is a no brainer to select Illinois. I would think that Iowa would even get selected before Minnesota. Minnesota to ReliaQuest Bowl is just pure nonsense. They are destined for Nashville or Charlotte.

Iowa may have been a better draw for Tampa, but the fan base is fed up with Ferentz. It is hard to see them traveling very well at this point. My in-laws who went to Iowa have given up on watching Iowa football the rest of the year.

I don't care where the perceived "ranking" is of the Big Ten teams. I want to a bowl game and location where I would want to go. I would take Nashville over Tampa immediately. New Years Eve in Nashville. What are going to do in Tampa? Other than avoid the locals. Plus I think the Illini attendance would be through the roof.

I can get into trouble at both locations 🤣

You can't think of any "entertainment" options in Tampa, eh?

I wish the Big Ten still had a tie-in with the Holiday Bowl. Would love to see the Illini at Petco Park with downtown San Diego right there.

Have you ever been to the Tampa region? I have been to Tampa a few times for work, and there are quite a few microbreweries, etc. and an hour drive either way will provide you with plenty of additional entertainment options. Not to mention access to beaches.

Others will definitely disagree with me, but I feel Nashville is highly overrated. I went with my wife there last November and Broadway was super congested and the music wasn't overly great. I would prefer going to Vegas over visiting Broadway ever again. I will say a trip to the Grand Ole Opry was fun though. Also, 15% liquor tax on top of the already expensive drinks made getting a drink in downtown Nashville excessively pricey. In addition, the cost for a hotel room in Nashville will be through the roof New Year's weekend.

I would take a trip to the beautiful Florida weather over an expensive Nashville trip in a heartbeat.

Most Illinois folks would dread spending New Years Eve in Nashville/Tennessee. I'd like Nashville but it's not for everyone. I'd also spend a week and New Years Eve in Orlando and then rent a car to get to Tampa for the game.

The B1G has a huge new TV deal. This is where the money is. We have more TV sets (Chicago metro) than anyone else in the B1G West. This is the leading factor - not head to head etc. After the top 3 B1G teams, we are the most attractive.

Unfortunately travelling with family to Bowl Games. Now if you are young, single, with a stack of small bills Tampa has a lot of world class entertainment venus
Feels like Tampa is still better than Nashville for families though, no?

I'll just put it this way: if the bowl game is in Nashville, my family and I will be going. If it's in Tampa, we will not.

Similar to other sentiments, I want what's best for me :). But, I am thrilled with whatever they get.
