One of writers has Illini in Pinstripe Bowl facing UNC. Other writer has Illini in Music City Bowl vs. Mississippi State.

In recent weeks, if they did have Illini in, they had them playing in the Quick Lane Bowl. Now they have either Iowa or Wisconsin playing in that game.

Projected matchup: Illinois vs. Kentucky

Anyone else have Illinois as a contender in the Big Ten West through Week 5? The Fighting Illini are 4-1 following their dominant win over Wisconsin and now, move into the upper tier of the league's bowl tie-ins. Kentucky drops down a spot this week after suffering its first loss on the road to Ole Miss. The Wildcats had a chance to win, but fumbled away their opportunity, twice.

Several of my coworkers and I are half hoping for the Pinstripe Bowl. The reason being, the title sponsor, Bad Boy Mowers, is one of our employer's customers.

I moved to South Carolina in January 1996. In the preceding decade we had been to 6 bowl games - 3 in Florida - and barely missed playing in another 2. I was looking forward to going to Jax, Tampa or Orlando to take in a bowl game with the Illini on a semi-routine basis. Obviously, things haven't quite turned out the way I expected. Having gotten that out of the way, I told my wife to be ready to pack our bags for a New Years Day game down south, and I don't want to be disappointed for the 27th straight year.

Both schools might have their sights set higher now, but an Illinois-Syracuse matchup would be a great draw. We've never played in the Pinstripe Bowl, Syrarcuse would bring in a huge NYC crowd and there's the ready-made storyline of Tommy DeVito coming home and facing his old school.

Not to mention I have a friend who is a Syracuse alum.

. As a side note, said friend thought DeVito was a good pickup for the Illini. He mentioned that he could be inconsistent, but thought he had the talent and a change of scenery would do him well.

A technical quibble: all of those projections appear to have a B1G team in both the Orange and Citrus bowls, but I believe it has to be either one or the other and can't be both.

2. Rose (Jan 2 - NYD is on Sunday so no bowls)
3. Orange (or Citrus if not)
4. ReliaQuest (formerly Outback, in Tampa, Jan 2)
5. Duke's Mayo (Charlotte, Dec 30)

7. Pinstripe (NYC, Dec 29)
8. Guaranteed Rate (Phoenix, Dec 27)
9. Quick Lane (Detroit, Dec 26)

I just hope any bowl features a favorable match-up. Last bowl we won was the 2011 Fight Hunger Bowl.

It's not too crazy to think we would be the fourth ranked B1G team and that won't likely be a great matchup. On any given Saturday, of course, anything can happen. But if we win the west we're likely to be a dog in our bowl game.

Maybe there is an assumption we will fall roughly equally with Maryland, and Maryland would probably be a better draw in that region than we would be. Pretty fair I think.
