Ian, did Rylance winning for Best Supporting Actor surprise you?

Definitely a surprise, though he was deserving. His character had such a great role in Bridge of Spies. All the signs pointed to Stallone, but the Rylance win made me happy. He gave a wonderful speech, too.

Yeah I figured they would have given it to Stallone but I thought that if anyone deserved it, it should have been Ruffalo that won in that category.

Thought they might have given Best Picture to The Revenant but Spotlight absolutely deserved the award. If you haven't seen it yet, it's definitely worth watching.

I thought Spotlightwas the best film of the year. Was definitely rooting for it. And like you, I thought Ruffalo gave the best supporting male performance of the year.

Overall, a solid night of entertainment! Let's do it again next year. :)

I was pulling for The Revenant until I saw Room Saturday night, that movie amazed me and impacted me more than the others. Saw the others but I was overwhelmed by Room. How Jacob Tremblay didn't get nominated is unreal... Maybe there should be child categories.

Been hearing some of the talking heads on TV saying Spotlight winning Best Picture was an upset. I don't see it. Unless it was apparently so much of a given that The Revenant was going to win it, I didn't see it that way.

Caught Triple 9 and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot last night.

The former didn't reinvent any wheels, but it was solidly entertaining (hard not to be with that cast). The latter I felt was much better than the critics have been saying. 3/4

I'm not a huge fan of Tina Fey, but in the "dramedy" genre, she nails it. The entire film felt genuine to me. I also enjoyed watching the feminism angle being mixed in with middle eastern culture. 3.5/4.

Spiderman looked weird. Was it CGI?

Here's Our Best Look at Spider-Man's Fabulous New Costume

These aren’t your Deadpool-style CGI eyes, although the effect is likely enhanced by CG trickery. The white area increases and decreases in size by an intricate series of different shutters opening or closing, just like a camera’s aperture.

Riding out the storm over the past few weeks.

Pickings have been slim at the theater. Probably going to check out Zootopia on Friday. I'm hoping Midnight Special will be making it to a theater near me. Jeff Nichols really knows how to capture person-to-person vulnerabilities (e.g. Mud, Shotgun Stories).

Just got back from Zootopia. Charming little animated feature with a positive, albeit not so subtle social message.

Great entertainment for parents to watch with their kids. And for any Breaking Bad fans out there, be on the lookout for a cool little reference.

3.5/4

Just saw 10 Cloverfield Lane and London Has Fallen this afternoon. I enjoyed them both. Cloverfield was a mixture of suspense, thriller, sci-fi all wrapped into one. 3.5-4 stars. London Has Fallen is pretty much action packed from about 10 minutes in until the final moments. Solid 3-3.5 stars.

I know the two films are technically stand alone, but I want to see the original Cloverfield before 10 Cloverfield Lane.

London Has Fallen didn't appeal to me when I saw the trailer. Seemed like another hokey "save the president" film.

Ian, I'd be curious to get your take on the new Batman v. Superman when you get a chance to see it.

I'll be catching the late showing on Thursday night. I didn't dislike Man of Steel like a lot of people did. I've always found Zack Snyder to be quite impressive, particularly visually. Watchmen is one of, if not my #1, favorite comic book adaptation. Sin City is another, though that was a Robert Rodriquez film.

Having seen both Cloverfields, there really isn't a direct connection between the two, but a tenuous one. But still, I'd watch the first one anyway. JJ Abrams refers to 10 Cloverfield as a 'Spritual Successor' or 'Blood Relative' to the first.

Regarding London, yes it is that. But I knew that going in so wasn't expecting anything award worthy.

Also, I had never heard of Midnight Special, but the preview has me thinking I want to see it. Might have to wait for the DVD though as I can't find it playing anywhere nearby.

Anyone watch Beasts of No Nation?

Brutal... difficult to watch at times.

Just read the review, perfect.

Just got out of Hello, My Name is Doris. Quite any interesting and awkward film. To me, though, the obsession exhibited by Doris (Sally Field) is overshadowed by John's (Max Greenfield) kindness.

Not sure what I'd rate it. I think I have to sleep on it.
