American soldier movies are always super hyped up. You know, showing patriotism and what not. But I mean come on, rate the movie on the movie. All the recent war movies were nothing special really, Seal Team 6 or whatever and some others that I cant remember the names. The best war movie in a long time was Fury.

There have been too many flag-wavers lately like Seal Team 6 and the other one about the Seals. I liked Zero-Dark-Thirty and Hurt Locker myself, but they don't paint the military as red white and blue as some of the others.

As for Fury--I loved it, but it was less of a war movie to me than a movie about 5 guys in a really terrible situation and how they dealt with it. Check out a movie from the 50's called "Men in War" for a similar situation in the Korean conflict.

My "Best Picture" tour continued last night with The Imitation Game. Historical inaccuracies aside, I thought it was a strong film with a great performance from Benedict Cumberbatch (well-deserving of his Best Actor nomination). It was able to blend humor into a dark situation rather well.

Tonight's leg of the Best Picture tour was "Boyhood." Great film, which I feel was primarily due to how it was crafted rather than its story. Patricia Arquette gave an admirable performance. 4/4.

I'm curious what you would give it if it was made like any other film (i.e. makeup for adults and prob 2/3 different actors for the kids).

Like I said, its craft played quite the role in what made it a great film. With a rotating door of actors and a makeup team on their A game, I would probably give it a 3/4. It wasn't a bad storyline by any means, but it wasn't anything that reinvented the wheel. I really respect Linklater for what he created with Boyhood (and his other great works).

David Oyelowo not being nominated for Best Actor is a shame. He was brilliant as Dr. King in Selma.

Took the 2 youngest grandkids to see Paddington last nite. A good entertaining kids movie, both of them loved it. Recommend if you have little ones to entertain.

Did you see "The Drop?" I thought this movie was very good, one of my favorites of 2014.

The Drop was really great.

Tom Hardy has been on a roll since 2009 and looks to be in for a BIG 2015:
-Child 44: He, Noomi Rapace, Gary Oldman
-Rocketman: Stars as Elton John
-Spliter Cell: Video game adaptation. I'm doubting the quality, but I bet it brings in some money.
-Mad Max: Fury Road: Stars as Max in the 4th installment of the Mad Max brand.
-The Revenent: As CardsIlliniFan8 brought up.

No I haven't. I will check it out soon. Thanks for the record.

You can't forget about Lawless. He did a great job, but Shia was on my nerves.

Also, inception he did damn good.

Hardy is one of my favorite actors out. Probably third behind Leo and MM.

Does Hardy and her have a thing? She was in The Drop too.

I was wondering everyones thoughts on Unbroken, I haven't seen anyones review. I want to see it because of the amazing story, but the Tomatometer is not great.

Ha, I left Lawless out intentionally. Could not stand that film.

I thought he was going to be kind of a mindless action star when he first came on the scene, but he changed my mind in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. I didn't care for his Bane (any beefing hulk could have done that role IMO).

It's funny to watch Black Hawk Down and see him as a fairly skinny Twombly. Barely recognizable. He also had a small part in my favorite British gangster movie Layer Cake.

Check this out.

I wouldnt worry about their ratings, IMO. I tend disagree with nearly all of them. They have given some of my favorites single number ratings, out of 100. It seems to usually just be their opinion which seems to always differ from mine. So if it looks interesting to you, watch it. That being said, for that movie and most "true stories", I feel like they tend to lose their excitement or whatever when you already know whats is going to happen. Takes a little of the fun out for me.

Agree with this on ratings. Especially with comedies.

Do you guys think that the ratings shown on Rotten Tomatoes is a true cross-section of the movie going public? I don't think it is. I feel it's Audience Score ratings are more representative of us :D. Meaning consumers like us who post on here, folks who watch movies for reasons other then just passing the time. While I use their system as a guideline, it's far from a be all, end all. I've thoroughly enjoyed many movies that got very low scores on their site, and vice versa. In the end it's just a tool. In saying all that I'll admit that RT is my site of choice when I look up movie reviews and I've learned to use it in a way that works well for me.

I agree with you. Some people like different things, but more times than not, regular joes like us have the same opinions on most movies.

I'm with you on RT being my site of choice, and I will ALWAYS check it before I see said movie. If it's 70%>lower I will come in with very low expectations.

Edit: more times than not, I'll be more impressed with the lower rates movie than the higher rated one.

Caught It Follows tonight.

I went in knowing nothing but the genre and what the poster looked like. It scared everything I had out of me, but it was probably one of the scariest films I've seen in some time. Built on tension rather than jump scares and made with a cast of unknown actors, I highly recommend it.

4/4.

Anyone gone to see Age of Ultron yet? I saw it tonight but I was wanting to get everyone else's opinion on it.

I went yesterday to see it but the theater was over 90 percent full and I didn't want to watch it from what would likely have been a bad seat. I'm trying again today but if it's nearly full again I'll just wait until tomorrow afternoon to catch it.

I watched Ex Machina instead which I really enjoyed. More a thinking persons' sci-fi with no action sequences at all but very thought provoking. The director, Alex Garland, wrote 28 Days/Weeks and Sunshine (very good sci-fi if you haven't seen it) and this is his first stint in the Directors chair. All of the films he's been involved with have a 70% or higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Just saw Age of Ultron. I liked it overall, as fun as the others. The CGI work in the opening sequence seemed a bit choppy compared to the rest of the film. This film is a transition to some new characters that will be fun to see how they develop. If you enjoyed the previous iterations you'll certainly enjoy this one.

I had heard that Disney was making a Tomorrowland movie and got to see the previews. Not sure what I was expecting but the trailer surprised me. It looked pretty good.

I caught Age of Ultron tonight. I think it had more of a comic book feel than the first Avengers; which I enjoyed. I could metaphorically see the voice bubbles coming out of the heroes' mouths. The new characters were enjoyable and James Spader's voice was perfect menacing for Ultron.

3.5/4.
