Meanwhile we have our LOL A10 moment...

St. Joe's, who started the season at 1-14, defeated LaSalle in the first game of the A-10 Tourney today. St. Joe's has now won 4 straight, which included wins over conference title contender Dayton, which ended up handing the top seed in the tournament to St. Bonaventure, and Richmond, whose loss to the Hawks dropped the Spiders to the 8 seed in the tournament.

Since the Patriot league was the COVID-bubbliest league in the country this year (only 2 teams played non-conference games, because on Dec 6 the league decided to nix non-conference and play two groups of double round-robin), Colgate has surged to 9th overall in the NET rankings thanks to only having played Army, Holy Cross and Boston University this season (4 times each). They went 11-1 to get the 2 seed (Navy won the conference at 12-1) and their reward is a quarterfinal matchup against Boston University for the 5th time this season.

The good news is that if they win that they actually would play a new team in the semifinals.

They do not, however, have an at-large worthy profile despite being ranked just ahead of Villanova in the NET rankings.

Upsets aplenty in ASUN tournament today. Of the 4 games played, 1 seed Liberty was the only higher seed to win defeating 8 seed Kennesaw State 69-59. 5 seed North Alabama defeated 4 seed North Florida 68-60, 6 seed FGCU defeated 3 seed Lipscomb 72-60 and 7 seed Stetson upset 2 seed Bellarmine 73-70.

So tomorrow's ASUN semifinals look like this:

1) Liberty vs. 7) Stetson
5) North Alabama vs. 6) FGCU

If North Alabama is able to defeat FGCU, then the winner of the Liberty/Stetson game will automatically qualify for the NCAA Tournament as North Alabama is currently in the 3rd year of their 4 year transition to D-I.

So far, so good today for at-large bubble teams, as St. Bonaventure is about to finish off Duquesne (lead 71-57 with under 2 mins left) and Loyola leads Southern Illinois 35-22 at the half.

Northern Iowa cancels their MVC tournament game against Drake within an hour before tipoff. Drake automatically advances. The thought that this can (and likely will) happen to one or more teams during the NCAA tournament terrifies me

If their records were reversed, they wouldn't have cancelled. Don't let it worry you. Realistically, once you get past the first round, the teams that are left aren't just trying to get their season over with.

?????

I'm presuming there's going to be rapid testing happening that will be verified.

Maybe you're right. They usually do these things first thing in the AM, but maybe they did a rapid test on the players/staff a couple hours ahead of time and they had a positive? I guess it's feasible. An hour before tipoff, for an evening game, is curious.

The Valley's statement on the cancellation:

In short, they were following guidelines they, as a conference, had used all season and not city of St. Louis guidelines and it ended up they had to do what they did.

sounds like they were also following CDC guidelines. So a game (and some hopes) are cancelled because some public health bureaucrat says so?

Wish they had told them to pound sand.

And we have our first official NCAA Tournament ticket punched without a conference tournament final being played. Liberty will represent the ASUN in the NCAA Tournament after defeating Stetson tonight 77-64 in one of the semifinals. The Flames automatically go through because North Alabama, who is in their 3rd year of a 4 year transition period from D-II to D-I, defeated Florida Gulf Coast 96-81. Due to North Alabama still being in the transition period they are ineligible for the NCAA Tournament. So while the ASUN final will still be played Sunday afternoon between Liberty and North Alabama in Jacksonville, FL, the ASUN representative in the NCAA Tournament has already been decided.

For the Flames, this is their 5th tournament appearance (technically 6th if you want to include last year's cancelled tournament) overall and their 3rd in a row.
