I think we'll have to agree to disagree. For me it is this simple - the Bears are so bad that they were the third worst team in football. They have huge needs all over the field. Therefore you draft the best player regardless of position. That is where the discussion ends for me.

You understandably put a premium on the QB position. And if Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning, Jameis Winston, or any of the other guys that were considered certain pro bowlers were available, you take him. Unfortunately for the Bears, they have a top 3 pick in a draft without a QB that is worthy of that pick. The top QB according to McShay is Trubisky who he ranks 28th. The top QB according to Kiper is also Trubisky, but at 16th. Trade down and take one, absolutely. Take Watson or Kizer in the second round - great. Just not with the #3 overall pick.

+1. Agree with all of this.

At the end of the day you have to rely on your scouting of these guys. The reality is no matter what QB you are talking about there are no sure things. The Patriots are the best franchise in the league and have been for some time. They have drafted more QB's since they drafted Tom Brady than the Bears have. How insane is that. The team who doesn't need a QB keeps drafting them and the Bears who can't find one take a flyer every third year. Who do you think is smarter? If you're scouts say they don't like any of the QB's at the top of the draft I am simply saying take one anyway in the 3rd or 4th. Seriously, take a look at the collection of busts that the Bears have drafted. You have to be willing to take a chance. By the way if the Patriots are willing to trade Garrapolo buyer beware. They are too smart to give away a great QB. I would want no part of that.

I think I was missing this part of your point. I thought you were saying that the Bears should take the best QB available with the third pick, which I disagree with. I do agree with you that spending a mid/late-round pick on QB to develop is a good idea, regardless of who the QB is (like the Pats with Brady).

FWIW, the QB I keep seeing associated with the Bears is Brad Kaaya from the U.

QB Mike Glennon [likely] to the Bears. Looking like $14.5 million over 3 years. Could someone with a wiser football mind than mine help me understand the rationale behind the move? Admittedly I had to Google who this guy was.

He's a less mobile version of Matt Ryan. Both players had the same college head coach. When he started for Tampa, the offensive line and their team were horrible.

Has only completed 10 passes since 2014. Nice payday...

I came to the crashing realization last night that I simply don't care any more about the Bears.

They're going to overpay for a bad free agent qb, and they're going to over draft and fail to develope a college qb, and the qb position is going to sabotage their development of the rest of the team in terms of both dollars spent against the cap and the ability of the rest of the team to succeed. They're going to can their coach and GM some time in the next 12 months and start the whole cycle again with similarly unfit or unqualified guys.

I should be ticked by all this, but I simply can't give a crap. There's simply no point to paying any attention to this team until there's an ownership change.

That's where I'm at. In fact, I really haven't cared since Lovie left.

I've gradually joined this camp as well. A personal lifetime of mediocrity has led to apathy and learned helplessness as a fan.

I'll shamelessly hop back on the bandwagon when there is a reason to care about this franchise again.

The Glennon deal is 3yrs/$45 mil, but only $19 mil is guaranteed.

If he doesnt pan out, they could just cut bait with him next year and will probably only be a $4-5 mil cap hit. Not a bad signing, now that the numbers have came out. Take a chance, see what happens. Sounds like they'll still draft a QB at some point as well.

Ok, this says ,14.5 over 3 years, further down is ,14.5 per year, which is it? H7uuuge difference.

Well I hope you aren't serious about that because you've always been a thoughtful poster that usually makes some pretty good points, but I can see where you're coming from. I agree the Glennon signing is not very exciting. The Bears put themselves in this position by never bringing in a backup that was ever a threat to unseat Cutler or draft a qb that they could develop. When Pace finally made the decision that it was time to move on from Cutler, it came in a year when the qb class is fairly weak with this draft, and there were not a lot of good free agent options out there. I think they are saying Glennon's guaranteed money is $19.5 million so I think the Bears are even viewing this as a low-risk temporary move. If he comes in and plays well it's a good signing. If he doesn't the money isn't so big that they can't start over again next year. I know that's not what fans want to hear but that's where we're at.

14.5 million per season, but 19 million is guaranteed. That means, he may or may not get the rest of the money (approx. 24 million) (19 million guaranteed + 24 million non guaranteed).

If he can be serviceable for 2-3 years as a young QB develops, I am ok with it, but they've gotta draft the right guy to develop. And hopefully not spend a first round pick on it.

From what I've read, Glennon can succeed with a talented team around him. We'll see, not expecting much.

As for Jeffery, this draft class is loaded with wide recievers and quite a few of them are absolute burners. Finding the next Tyreek Hill would be nice. And Kevin White being healthy would also be nice.

#294
I'm not counting on Kevin White for any production. Anything he does is a bonus. The guy has been injured two seasons in a row and who knows how that will affect his speed or burst.

FWIW, the Bears did sign Markus Wheaton. Formerly of the Steelers. Another depth WR.

Is this the Bears thread or the coaching thread? I made a post about apathy over there. And I agree with you fully here. It's tough when Illinois football is the team I am most optimistic about.

Bears also signed Quinton Demps. Lead the Texans in INTs last year. They are lamenting his loss down here.

Yes, please explain. I don't know anything about him.

Don't know much about him either to be honest. Just moved here from the UK in September. Lead the team in INTs this year - had 6 - and I believe the Houston D was one of the best in the league this past year. Has only been a starter for the past two years so despite being 32 before the season starts, he doesn't appear to have many miles on him.

I don't really follow the Texans (yet) but the sports guys on TV down here were saying it was a big loss.
