Chicago Bears 2026-2027

I've contended for 30 plus years that Tepper as head coach was among the worst D1 power conference head coaches in the modern era. The 1994 season is exhibit A. But when you look in totality at what he inherited (a solid top 25 or better program) vs what he left behind (a dumpster fire that didn't win a game in 1997 & one of the worst D1 power conference teams of all time) it speaks to how AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL he was as a head coach. A great human being of that I have no doubt but just a disaster as a head coach.

Performance falling off a cliff coinciding with the exact moment the last Mac-era recruit left town tells the whole story.

That whole sequence…

Stoner fired for corruption
Mac promoted to both HC and AD.
Mac taking the Texas job.
Trustees declining to do a coaching search or to wait to hire a coach until after they’d hired an AD and promoting Tepper to HC.
Hiring Guenther as AD.
Guenther for some reason sticking with Tepper, a guy he didn’t hire, after missing a bowl in 93.

It’s just not how a big time program is run and Illinois stopped being a big time program. Bizarrely, they repeated many of the same mistakes in the whole Beckman>Cubit>Smith transition 20+ years later.

And I fear the same thing is happening now. Every time it's time to step up to a different level and continue a positive trajectory the program seems to decide to "go cheap" & fall back into the abyss. Cheap in modern day terms being our poor NIL funding relative to the big boys.

As I mentioned this was before my time, but it's obviously something I've read a lot about.

Making one of the best and most sought-after DC's in the game your head coach to keep him in the building seems like a very justifiable choice in that moment.

And the prospects were positive enough after '93 for the team to be ranked #22 in preseason '94.

It's keeping him after '95, yet another disappointment and after the Chris Redman/Greg Landry fiasco that was an impossible to justify travesty that destroyed the program.

And I fear the same thing is happening now. Every time it's time to step up to a different level and continue a positive trajectory the program seems to decide to "go cheap" & fall back into the abyss. Cheap in modern day terms being our poor NIL funding relative to the big boys.
I think Whitman's ability to bring resources into the program has been incredible actually. We didn't cheap out on this team, we failed to keep the same structure that was turning the money into results, as revealed by losing to two lower-resourced teams at home.

RIP COACH! Do it for Coach just like you did it in Lambeau for Walter after he passed.

George Halas's last hire. Ditka was literally a man, a myth, a legend. RIP Coach.

One of my favorite stories involving Ditka is one that Steve McMichael used to tell. At the start of the Bears 1983 training camp, Ditka said "I've got good news and I've got bad news. The good news is in the next 3 years we're going to win a Super Bowl. The bad news is 1/2 of you won't be on the roster by the time it happens."

Maybe instead of taking on the grim reaper with 1 full size Ditka, we should have sent 11 tiny Ditkas.

On a personal note taking my 4 girls to their first Bears game vs the Falcons on the 18th. Of course I want them to have fun but ive heard atlanta has the best and cheapest nfl food. Not sure of the entire lineup but I will be putting that to the test with at least the oxtail, lobster roll, and hitting as many of the $2 and $3 menu items i can handle.

I know a lot of people including some media are forecasting a fairly easy win for the Bears on Sunday. I think the Packers will be fired up and will play their best game of the season so far. I’m just not allowing myself to believe the Bears can win at Lambeau until they show me.

I have a tendency to agree with you with all things being equal. That said, this time around, all things aren't equal.

The Bears offensive line SHOULD absolutely destroy that Packers defensive line. If they are physical and bring the running game, they control all 60 minutes.

I'm still extremely leary of the Bears defensive line and worry that the Packers will control the line of scrimmage on that side of the ball. The Packers are trying to find two lineman off of the scrap heap to throw in there and they don't have Jacobs. There's no excuse to get run.

Adding to their offensive line issues, with the Packers struggle to run and them having a top receiver out for the year, they should be able to pin their ears back and get pressure on Love.

With the Packers issues on defense (a top LB out too), the Bears playmakers, especially TE's) should have an absolute ball out there. The Packers have no answers to the Bears skilled position guys.

Now, you have to ask what can beat them and it's the Bagent having a back up QB type game, which is holding the ball too long, being late with throws, turning the ball over which leads to a short field for Green Bay or a pick 6. It's his first true road game, which is a concern. That's one way.

Another way would be that with Monagai out, Swift having fumbling issues(very recently) and Johnson as the backup...turnovers again would be a concern, not hitting holes in a reasonably quick fashion, etc.

Finally, it's a road game and in the NFL, that is worth some points. Momentum and confidence is a funny thing.

The bottom line is if both teams play a great game, it should be a two TD win for the Bears. If the Pack plays a great game and the Bears play reasonably well, the Bears win, but it'll be a little shaky. If the Bears melt down and do everything possible to beat themselves....they can leave with an L. An example of that would be Philly coming into Chicago on Monday night without Williams. It was hard to imagine the Bears winning that game with Keenum at QB, but the Eagles imploded a few times, which led to their demise.

Most everything tells us that the Bears should win this game, but history. History tells us that something ridiculous will happen to lose it. So, I 100% get how you're feeling. I'm kind of in a see it to believe it frame of mind as well.
