I don't get the hate-on some Cardinal fans have for Heyward.

The Cardinals traded for a guy with one year left on his contract. He played (quite well) for a year and then left in free agency. How is he any different from, say, Carlos Beltran or Rafael Furcal? Why should he have any loyalty to the Cardinals?

Is it simply because the Cardinal fans wanted him to come back?

By the way, while it's true that Heyward's contract with the Cubs over the life of the contract is less than what the Cardinals reportedly offered him, on a per year basis, the Cubs contract is more for the first three years, at which point Heyward has the option to go back to free agency. So, it's not really true that Heyward turned down more money to play for the Cubs.

We wanted him back. He's the perfect player for the cards. Most cardinal fans don't like his decision, but respect it. At end of the day it is a business, and their career could be done at any moment. Go for money early, take pay cuts to win later.

His situation was a lot different than Beltran and furcal. Btw, furcal was injured all if 2013 and wasn't resigned that offseason.

Heyward turned down more total dollars from the Cardinals and the Cubs are in as good of a position to win long-term as any other team in baseball, but sure, he just grabbed the money instead of caring about winning, gotcha. :tsk:

It's a pretty breezy brush-off of an ugly incident, to be sure.

But mostly I'm just glad to hear Cardinal fans ceding the imagined high ground their fan base supposedly holds. RIP, BFIB.

Most of the fans hate the term BFIB. It's a tacky and generic term that the media gave. Only bandwagoners believe in that.

Most of the fans hate the term BFIB.

Whether they hate the term itself or not, they most certainly do not hate the narrative that led to it: The most knowledgeable, most loyal fans; the "Cardinal Way"; that they don't sully themselves with mercenary spending on free agents; the notion of St. Louis as America's baseball utopia (see this column for perhaps the purest, uncut version of this).

Even our Illini brother Will Leitch, while saying "BFIB is a dumb term and I can't ever remember anyone actually using it with a straight face" is physically unable to prevent himself from continuing on to make the case of "But seriously, we probably are though!" (#2 on his list is now under official review)

I think this is intertwined with the anger at Heyward. The narrative is that players are supposed to arrive in St. Louis, drink from the fountain of playing The Right Way, and instantly see the folly in opting to call anywhere else home. That Heyward could choose otherwise - in his prime, and to the Cubs, no less - cuts against the grain in a way that really bothers people.

Heyward's not looking good at the plate but then looked at his game logs for April in 2013-2015 and they were pretty awful. When the weather heats up, his bat comes to life.

This is why many Cardinals fans lost some respect for Heyward. It's not just showing hatred for Heyward, but showing support for the "old core" here in St. Louis.

Imagine that, the New York Post made that up by the racial slurs. Deadspin is reporting it did not happen, and deadspin hates the Cardinals. I would think they would jump on this "story" if it was indeed true.

Right, not saying it did or didn't happen, but there has been no proof to show it did and the audio from the game has been isolated and nothing can be heard. This is really a stupid thing to be bickering about and the whole thing, I hope, will be blown over soon. We booed him last night, okay, let's move on. Rarely does anyone ever get booed there, Brandon Phillips is the only one I can think of that is consistently harassed, but now he(JHey) is just another guy on a rival team. Let's play ball!

For what it's worth, Dexter Fowler didn't hear of any racial slurs and actually gave STL fans their due.

It is a truly unfortunate reality, as blatant racism and racist remarks are openly let loose far too frequently in all sports in cities across the country (Chicago, Boston, NY, STL, Milwaukee, wherever, USA). Consider me an idealist, but I feel we as a society are making progress for change and growth; we've come a long way but have a ways to go.

Professional sports should be the last place this occurs. It's an arena where all peoples can come together, even Cubs and Cardinals fans :)

I agree. Had the situation been reversed and Heyward was making his first appearance as a Cardinal in Chicago, the boo birds would have been alive and well at Wrigley.

Game 2 of the series tonight. Hammel vs. Garcia. Let's go!

Agree with both of you! Let's just play ball and have fun!

Another fun one last night. That outfield assist from Heyward at the plate was amazing. That play saved at least one run.

Rizzo gets his home run robbed then a should have been strike 3 turns into a double followed by a 2 run home run.

It already has the feels of one of those games.
