Well, if the Cards (bleh) were going to make a run at the Cubs' top spot in the NL central, starting it with a sweep of the good guys in late June would be the way to go. Hopefully Jake can silence them today and we can get one game back from them. These last two losses have been tough to watch as we keep getting guys in scoring position in the bottom of the 9th only to come up short.

Meh - if we win today, they gained 1 measly game on us in the standings.

Let's just pretend that whole series never happened.

Yeah, it's been a tough stretch. I think we are 1-5 in our last 6 games. Thank goodness the Cards haven't capitalized and made up tons of ground.

Actually, it seems the entire NL Central hasn't enjoyed the 2nd half of June. The AL and NL West have really sparked though.

Cubs send Concepcion down and bring up RHP and LOOGY Joel Peralta. Peralta does a lot of quick pitches. Hopefully, when they play Pittsburgh again him and Strop can pitch to Sean Rodriguez with the bases empty.:D

Jake hasn't looked like his old self in his past few starts, but fortunately Bryant was up to the task tonight. 5-5, 3 HR, 2 2B.

The Cubs really miss Fowler. Especially with Zobrist having a month-long slump. As a team, they're not grinding out at bats like they were at the beginning of the year. Almora and Contreras getting so much play has a lot to do with that. They'll learn.

On the plus side, while Heyward hasn't gone through a major hot streak, he's quietly not sucked for the last month.

I think with every hit by Contreras, Montero's last day with the Cubs gets a little closer. Dude just looks like he can't do it any more. Back injuries will do that.

The back end of the bullpen is an utter mess right now. Grimm and Warren have been really disappointing. I'll be curious if Warren looks better after he's been stretched out. He was better as a starter for the Yankees last year.

Warren only started 17 of 43 games he pitched in for the Yankees last season. Was there really a big difference in the games he started vs the games he pitched in relief?

I'm confused by this.

Peralta, despite being a RHP, has better splits versus LH hitters. Basically he's a right-handed throwing, lefty one-out guy (LOOGY).

At least I think that's what CLEARWATERDAN was getting at.

Is anybody ever going to get Baez to shorten his swing with two strikes? Once he gets down in the count I almost fully expect a strike out or infield pop up.

He needs to talk to Rizzo as he is someone who has improved drastically in that aspect.

And now Travis Wood is playing LF. Baseball is the best.

EDIT: Wood just swapped spots with Spencer Patton.

Then Patton and Wood switched again for the righty-righty matchup. This is the stuff of little league fun!

Maddon gets it in so many different ways. This enhances team chemistry. Players will trust him even more. Baseball made fun again. This will be a destination team for so many future free agents as long Maddon stays the manager. I just wish he was younger.

Nothing like the Cincinatti Reds to help a team get right.

Kind of wish this was a four game series. That Reds bullpen is going to be useless(er) tomorrow.

I'm concerned about Rizzo's back. It doesn't seem to affect him at the plate but he has been having noticeable trouble bending down for low throws at first base.
