Chicago Cubs 2017 Season

[ W ] #91 & #92.

Cubs getting hot at the right time. The NLDS versus the Nationals will be a great series. Hoping 2015 Daniel Murphy doesn't show up.

No Lackey. Interesting. Thought they might go with the hot hand lately, but then I'm not paid millions to manage a roster.

How Kyle Hendricks is good is one of baseballs biggest mysteries to me. Guy throws 85 mph fastballs with an OK change and not good curveball.

The smoke and mirrors must end! (that said, he will now lead the Cubs to another WS because... baseball).

Kyle Hendricks = elite groundball rate x elite soft contact rate

Combine those two factors and you are going to be good. he locates pitches with the best of them, preventing hitters from getting lift on the ball and hitting it hard.

Yeah. He has three pitches that go three different speeds and locates all of them low and outside in the zone. He’s very hard to time and when the hitter does make contact, it’s a slow roller to the second baseman as often as not. I’d love to know where he ranks in inducing 4-3s since coming in the League. I’ll bet he’s in the top 5.

He has nearly 600 IP since coming up, with an ERA under 3 and a WHIP under 1.1. He’s the real deal.

Kyle Hendricks = Greg Maddux lite

Maddux never blew anyone away either. He just took you to 2-2 and got you swinging at a low and away sinker he could throw for a strike or you hit a grounder to 2nd .

We can only hope Hendricks can have half the career of Maddux, but the comparison is valid in many respects.

He’ll be on the playoff roster and be ready to spell any of the starters (especially Arrieta) if he’s shaky.

something tells me Lackey ends up starting a game somewhere in the post season.

Hes on the roster for a reason and its not to be a dugout cheerleader . That, or Joe was afraid he would go Sutcliffe on him if told he was left off the roster.

Sitting Jay seems like the wrong move, but I don't know his/Schwarber's/Zobrist's splits against righties.

Also fun fact: John Jay is tied for best all time fielding percentage as an outfielder for a career.

I had the same initial thought you did, but then saw that Heyward has a lifetime .405 average (15/37) against Strasburg. So perhaps that is the logic behind the move. As we know with Maddon, he can be unpredictable.

And that's a very fun fact! I've loved what Jon Jay has done all season long and think he will come up big at some point this series.

Hendricks gutted out those 7 innings there. It didn't feel like he was really on top of his game, but yet he still put up zeroes.

Honestly, it still makes me nervous when Edwards comes in...just remember those games where he gave it away. Nice job there though!

I felt like he looked just like he did in game 7 of the World Series last year. This time Maddon let him pitch like he should have last November.
