The Shaw situation- love his defense, love his speed… the hitting is a big problem. At this point he is lost and almost an automatic out.

I’ve never seen a hitter at the major leagues level as lost. Mario Mendoza might give him a run for his money. It’s time to get him more seasoning in the minors. I have faith that he will be a good ball player. Just not this year.
Seems like Shaw has lost the swagger he came back from AAA with in May. PCA really struggled last June and July too. Maybe it will still click for him at some point.

At bat 1 for Seiya: Putrid strikeout runner on 1st
At bat 2 for Seiya: putrid infield pop out runner on 2nd

What a STUD!!!!

Jed Hoyer does not deserve an extension.

3 hole hitter that has never come through in any clutch situation and can't field and then a starting rotation with no top 2 rotation arms. Starting Chris Flexen in Yankee stadium lmfao

major league playoff teams do not hit Seiya Suckzuki 3rd
major league playoff teams do not start Chris Flexen in yankee stadium

I just worry about the innings. He’s never thrown more than 88 in a season, even going back to his college days. He’s at 56 already. Another month of 5 innings every 5 days and he’s in uncharted territory for his arm.
Yes he will be. We need a starter but a starter that has years left on a contract or under control. If Assad would ever get healthy, he could be a back of the rotation guy. Flexen started just to buy time tonight. Taillon hopefully will be back by mid august. We have managed so far with 3/5ths of our rotation out for a significant amount of time.

Much better today. 8 shutout innings by Boyd and some early offense. Felt like we really needed that one. The Brewers catching us going into the All-Star break would be super deflating. Good chance to prevent that tomorrow and salvage a series win with Shota on the mound.

Also, the fact that the Cubs haven’t been swept this year this deep into the season is quite impressive. Some really ugly losses but they always seem to bounce back.

Love sitting at the All Star break at 57-39. What a ride this season has been. Tons of baseball left and a lot could go good or bad, but such a fun year so far. Excited to see where it goes.
on track to win 96 games
that normally wins a division , or gets you into a wild card position

they do need another arm that they can slot into a 3 or 4 spot in the rotation . really missing Steele .

not sure what can be done about 3rd base . I guess stick with Shaw and just bat him 8th or 9th. sucks to not have a good bat at that position . I guess PCA makes up for it

I think they’ll do something at 3B. I have my doubts that it will be Suarez or even someone close to that level though. I’ve mentioned Sosa on WSox, but there have to be other guys like him available, hopefully who play better defense than Sosa. Surprised they haven’t been giving Long more time at 3B (think he’s played there 7 games this season) unless he is just terrible there. Though I think he is a strong candidate to be traded for pitching.

Suarez's is 34 and his contract is up at the end of the season, so he'd be a true rental. Arizona is 5.5 games back of the last WC spot and 4th in their own division. Any owner in that position should be looking toward next season. I see no reason why the Cubs should not go after Suarez. He shouldn't require a haul.

A starter will be needed until JT comes back. I think a RH 1B with power will be another piece to get. I am ok with Shaw at 3rd as he makes plays. He does not have the Kris Bryant brain fart IQ we had to put up with when he was here. I am hoping this time off and the break, he can get back to hitting fundamentals where he can be an asset. If we can get Suarez, he could also play 1st to give Busch a breather. He is a rental though.

His age and being a rental will not cost the Cubs much. I would only entertain trading for a starter if he can be controlled and not a rental.

The cubs do not need a 1b. Busch is above average and an excellent defender. And, for those who say he can’t hit lefties, he’s done fine against lefties the last couple of weeks.

I didn’t say the Cubs shouldn’t go after him. I said I don’t think they will (or at least won’t get him). Plus, not sure what you mean by “shouldn’t require a haul,” but I think people are underestimating what it will take to get him. I’m not sure what other hitters will be available, but Suarez will be one of the top ones if not THE top one so there will be plenty of competition.

Here are some of the better bats who have been traded last two deadlines. All but Lane Thomas (who was signed through this year) were one-year rentals.

Guardians gave up their #8, #22 and an unranked prospect to get Thomas. Mariners gave up #29 prospect to get Justin Turner. Red Sox gave up 3 prospects including their #22 for Danny Jansen. In 2023, Cubs traded #14 and #16 prospects for Candelario. None of those guys were having close to the season Suarez is having except Candy, and his wasn’t nearly as good — 57-16-53-.258 versus 58-31-78-.250. And if I’m AZ, I’m willing to send some cash along to maximize the return. It won’t take a top 5 prospect, but I think it will take a pretty decent haul to get Saurez. Maybe wouldn’t be an issue if that was the only need, but Cubs need a #3 SP plus ideally a second SP. And another bullpen arm would be helpful. All that starts adding up.

What do you think it takes to realistically get Suarez? I could see Jonathon Long + a major league bullpen arm.

Unfortunately, we may be bidding against the Yankees. So - that may push the price higher.

I could only laugh at this one, though.

The author and his editor should be put in adjoining padded rooms to even seriously suggest that.

Here is the author's bio at the end of the article:
Garrett Kerman covers all combat sports, from MMA and UFC, to boxing, to bare-knuckle, for ClutchPoints. He is also very well-versed in all American sports, especially the NFL, when it comes to news and betting analysis. The Saint Cloud, Florida native has bylines at Playmaker HQ and Vegas Odds.

'Nuff said. He must have gotten concussed from a stray MMA punch once or twice.
