If you are trying to read the tea leaves, is Anderson's leaving Michigan after 12 years to come to Illinois a sign that Howard is going to be back at Michigan next year? Clearly Anderson would have insider access to Howard's status and after what happened between him and Howard there is no way he would want to remain there if the Howard clown show was going to continue for at least another season. We obviously are the beneficiaries of both Anderson's arrival and of Howard's staying on as coach, so this is a win for the ILLINI. But why Michigan's Athletic Director would allow Howard to remain is mystifying given the damage that his continued presence does to the exalted Michigan brand and its basketball program. Just Maize and Blue arrogance, I guess.
What REALLY happened with Juwan Howard!! | Jeff Goodman's ...'s ...

Juwan Howard was fired???

Perhaps my favorite student-athlete at the U of I was Jack Ingram from the memorable 2004-2005 ILLINI basketball team. Jack was an electrical engineering student and the first big man off the bench ...Playing in the National Championship game in basketball while graduating in 4 years with honors from the #1 ranked electrical engineering program in the country???
Jack Ingram was true student athlete. As a Univ ILL BSEE and MSEE I am proud of our school. I think MIT and Stanford might argue with you about #1 ranked.

What sort of candidates is Michigan looking at? Big fish hunting, other P5 coaches? Do they make a run a BU?

Unfortunately I see this as more of a moment of being DePaul to a level of relevancy. IMO recruiting Chicago just got harder. Great move by DePaul.
I’m not worried about that at all. Brad has proven he doesn’t need Chicago to recruit at Illinois. It’s a big reason why I love him as a coach here. He’ll go into Chicago. But, it’s not going to define him.

Very hard to be a B10 basketball coach.

ex NBA players rarely have success in the role. They usually have limited college coaching experience and over estimate their ability to recruit.

current
Mike Woodson - hot seat
Kenny Payne - fired. Unlike others Payne actually spent a significant time as college assistant coach 16 years, Univ OR 4 years and Univ Kentucky 16 years.
Juwon Howard - fired
Jerry Stackhouse - fired
Hubert Davis - doing great 26-6 UNC this season. 12 years in NBA reserve avg 8 ppg. Maybe learned more watching and not being a star. In college was only starter his senior year 20 ppg. He has only been HC 3 seasons. He was 20-13 last year.
Penny Hardaway - Memphis 22-10 announced they will not accept NIT bid
Rod Strickland - Long Island University
Reggie Theus - Bethune

If I was AD I would steer away from famous alums ( I know Eddie Johnson has thrown his hat in ring a couple times for Illinois).

Interesting article about Calipari's coaching tree. Out of 9 assistants who got HC jobs only Josh Pastner has had any success.

Just to say this out loud because I myself keep forgetting it: Jake Diebler is not Jon Diebler and did not play at OSU, and Drew Valentine is not Denzel Valentine and did not play at MSU.
This has totally changed my perspective, happy I wasn’t the only one being drawn in by this lol

Love it or hate it, the world of in-state high school recruiting that defined the Weber/Groce era is just completely gone, most likely never to return.

We have more NIL than ePaul.

It’s honestly shocking how much college basketball changed in the last five years. Probably more than the previous fifty.
Crazy how much of it seems to directly be to Illinois' benefit as well.

I for one do not miss the days of having to cater to Robert Smith and Simeon's every whim just to sniff a chance at landing their 2nd or 3rd best players.

Or being locked out of Chicago talent for a half decade + because we didn't promote Jimmy Collins.

Larry fking loves the illini. Absolute legend. He comes down to campus and gives guest lectures to business students at least monthly. Guy didn’t just donate to get a tax break a peace out. He loves seeing illini on the top of lists (sports, academics, etc).

Whoever in the development world nurtured that relationship is the greatest illini hire in modern history lol

When social media really came to the fore, it just became so, so toxic.

Let's not sell Brad Underwood short though, he proved how wrong some of the narratives about our recruiting were before he had a single NIL dollar to spend. The bad takes of the Weber Wars remain bad.

But the NIL era turns having an insane army of recruiting-obsessed weirdos on the internet from a huge liability to a huge strength.

I agree. I just think it adds stronger competition than before. Northwestern is our little brother. DePaul is still the red-headed step child.
