Optics wise it looks bad to lose an Alum to a lateral move. Comes off as dissension in the coaching staff. If it causes Hansberry/Harris to bolt it’s one hell of a mess to clean up.

Underwood chose Chester for a reason. For the relationship to go off the rails this quickly is not a good look. If Chester wasn’t an alum this would be easier to take but nobody bleeds orange and blue more that Chester
I'm not sure anyone outside of the fan base sees it this way whatsoever.

Either Chester had some unrealistic expectations or Brad is very hard to work for (or both). At least it keeps the offseason interesting for everyone.

I'm not seeing anyone factor in all the 'not exactly jokes' from our insiders about Tyler. My quick take is that Tyler in a lesser role may have been having a greater impact on things than other staff thought he should. If you are an AC and your boss is listening to his (on staff) son more than to you... If your role recruiting high school players is being minimized, and coaching defense is given to some guy who doesn't get results most of the year and you have to clean it up for the tourney, what is left for you to hang your hat on? What do you point to in your head coach interview and say, 'I did that.' If you're an AD looking for an HC and you pull up Illinois game film, who are you going to see sitting next to Brad Underwood talking strategy with him on the bench? Not Chester Frazier.
Betting on yourself is never a "Beta move."

Edit to say that this isn't Tyler's fault, but it's a problem.

I hate that this very well could be exactly what happened.

We did pick up our defense in the tourney significantly; it was a very, very noticeable improvement.

It's interesting how the assumption is Chester chose to make a lateral move at a "lesser" school vs considering Chester got fired/asked to move on. Who we replace him will be telling

I wonder if we'll get insiders calling Chester Frazier "soft" because he wasn't getting guaranteed coaching input and decided to transfer out.

I’m of the belief that Chester leaving isn’t a huge deal because his recruiting track record was sneaky not awesome, but why wouldn’t Brad let him run the defense if that was the reason he’s leaving?

Why do we care about what people outside the fan base care about? The people that matter are the paying customers - Illini fans, boosters, etc. It’s bad optics to the base and that’s far worse than anything outside fanbase cares about
Exactly my point. No one cares other than fans who generate these "optics" to get worked up over. Brad Underwood's job is to win games.

well, we care about what recruits think.

for my part, I don't really consider it bad optics. it's just the nature of the business.
