The only two jobs that feel like a step up from Illinois are UNC and Kansas and I don't know why they would go with a 61 year old Underwood unless other options fall through.
The only scenario I can think of is that if Self retires at Kansas, maybe he actively participates in the search for his successor and the school is actually very interested in his opinion. In that case I could see Self wanting them to hire BU as I believe they are friends and Self has a lot of respect for BU.

BU's best attributes are program building and ability to replace rosters. That being said he has one elite 8 and several disappointing exits from NCAA and BIG.
Kansas will go after 5+ coaches before it ever gets to BU and their coaching search may not extend past their second choice. Kansas will go after a younger Coach, just look at Iowa State's Coach. Believe BU knows what he has at Illinois.

I see some delusional Indiana people think they are going to hire Painter away from Purdue. On the other hand, its Sports Illustrated, so this article was probably written by AI
I've always thought the Hoosier fans were delusional, at least in the last 30 years. Somebody has to be smoking some seriously laced sh*t to believe that Painter would leave Purdue to go to Bloomington.

I mean he’s an Indiana guy … He just stole the 5 star recruit that IU had to have and got him to come to Notre Dame …

He’s recruited at an elite level since he’s been at ND … Top 5 class for 2025 nationally … And is a fantastic coach …

You give Shrewsberry IU type of money to get players … He will win … A lot …

IU could do A LOT worse …

There are also some rumblings that Beard wants the IU job but he could hold out to see if a certain Big 12 coach decides to call it quits … And he would want that job even more …

Dusty feels like IU passed on him last year and maybe that’ll all get smoothed over but maybe it won’t …
Would this happen to be a coach that is pretty *Self*less?

It's like you were reading my mind, as I wrote that I was thinking you could draw lines between 2/3 and 4/5. Debate and flip-flop the two in each tier as per your own views, but I think the three tiers are pretty obvious. Others I'm sure will have IU higher but 38 years...

Also funny that we both say that Texas hoops would be the lesser sport there, but I say that makes the job less attractive and you say say more (than Tennessee). Agree on NIL levels but how much would make it to basketball?
I debated about the placing of Texas and Tennessee. At the end of the day, my opinion was that Texas wants a more well-rounded program and would put more long-term resources into basketball than Tennessee. However, I could see the trade-off between resources and expectations.

More of a gut feel on my part.

North Carolina
Tennessee. SEC is really good and Knoxville
Kansas. good history but terrible location
Indiana. B1G and better than Texas or Miami
Texas. Austin is cool but football
Miami. Football, Hurricanes, meh

Rick will be 71 this summer … He’s got an older team and hopes to make a deep run this March …

I know there was a little talk in the summer that this could be it for him … And his assistants are actively pursuing other jobs … I don’t think that’s a coincidence …
like this guy??

Yeah, Barnes is at least 70 if my memory serves. I’d imagine he’s probably year to year based on how he’s feeling at season’s end.
Success or not, I would say these older coaches are sick of NIL. Self has been doing it for ever, but Barnes, Izzo types have to be thinking about getting out.

Just for the sake or argument, if Brad ever did decide to leave in the next couple years......IMO we should back the Brinks truck up for Grant McCasland. Dude will be an absolute star IMO.

....ofc points moot if Texas hires him though (how wild would that be for Texas to steal Texas Tech's coach TWICE is such a short timeframe)

This … It’d be the one job besides UNC, and maybe Texas/Texas Tech that would actually get Brad’s attention this cycle …

I say this with all respect to anyone associated with Texas Tech or Lubbock, but exactly why would Underwood have any interest in Texas Tech over a program like Illinois? I can understand the other programs, but if Illinois lost a coach to Texas Tech in any of the major sports except maybe baseball that would be really disappointing.

I dont know about this coach but LaTulip who's opinion I value, stated the Arkansas St. Head Coach is from the Nate Oats tree and is an up and coming coach to keep an eye on. I don't know much about him but I do see Ark. St challenged some good teams in the non conference by beating Memphis and playing Bama to single digits. I'm certainly not saying these jobs but said when Iowa St made thier hire folks were surprised and it worked out.
I hope Brad stays but the program is in a good place. I trust Josh Whitman as much as anyone being able to make the right hire given where he and Underwood have the program right now. I hope Brad stats but it's not like it was 7 or 8 years ago.

I’m obviously biased…but with the exception of Tarhole Road…aren’t those all lateral moves?

Austin is nice. Good tunes, BBQ, and it’s quirky in a good way. But it’s a football school. Deep pockets I guess?…would be the draw?

Tech is the one that surprises me…
I wouldn’t think the brown, dusty fields of Lubbock would be real enticing. Tech doesn’t have a basketball history even as good as ours. I’d be $uprised if they would pay Brad more than he makes here too.
Or am I wrong, what am I missing?

Bryan is an absolute 🦈 … I’ve said it here many, many times … One of the best recruiters in the sport … Period …

He can also flat out coach …

He’s gonna be at an elite level program sooner rather than later …

If I was Miami or FSU … He’d be on my list …

His agent isn't doing his job if there aren't feelers being put out.

Fact of life in the college coaching world - agents will always test the market.
The agents want their cut of the money, whether it comes from a new team or an increase from the current one. The agent wouldn’t be looking out for his or her own self interests if not doing that.

I think the question perhaps should be, if Underwood goes to Whitman and says I've got an offer from Miami, will you match the money, will Whitman say yes?

It was reported that Whitman was getting fed up with the game prior to last season. An Elite 8 can cure a lot, but I'm guessing Whitman is not saying there is a blank check here. At some point he could say, ok congrats, enjoy the new job.

Because of course while Underwood is looking at other schools, Whitman certainly has a list of other coaches.
Ah yes… the Guenther Method

If you do that, you better be damn sure that you can bring in someone who can perform at the level that you're accustomed to. We know that better than anyone. Oklahoma State's idiocy turned into our good fortune and it's all because they were cheap.
