But let’s be real…(it’s not like there’s been just one drought either.) There is no denying the years we had marquee talent is the years we got marquee results. We know which teams put most of those wins up there…which teams inflated that win % I mean come on. It was the teams with the future pros AND the other good/solid competitive teams helmed by our winningest coaches. I mean what are we even talking about here?
I'm not sure anymore. Is the point that we're only good when we get good players? Isn't that like every program?

My point, and I'll die on this hill, is that we're a top 15 program all time. All the times. All of them. Roll em up put em together. We have a top 15 body of work as a program.

Since the slush fund nuked the program, nearly every coach across nearly every decade has been pretty successful. (We were good before then, too.)

80s:
- Top 10 program

90s:
- Bruce Pearl sanctions. Probably like top 35 despite the sanctions.

00s
- Top 10 program

10s
- Bad

2020s
- Top 10 program

I just don't understand how a person can look at our program and think that conditions have to be perfect to win here. That the 2010s were our "normal". It's the opposite. As long as we don't have sanctions or an incompetent coach, we're a pretty elite program.

Anyway, let's beat Michigan.

I'm pretty sure it was the Central Illinois boosters that pushed Weber to take Bill Cole, and Weber acquiesced. Had the Weber ignored the boosters and the Gordon fiasco not happened, I think we would have ended up with Hummel and Et'waun Moore.

I am not sure about that. It sounds like an exaggeration of something Weber would say. Bruce did slow play Robbie Hummel and eventually stopped recruiting him after Bill Cole committed. My recollection is he felt Hummel was too thin to play inside and too slow to be a guard.

There were good players Weber could've gotten without cheating. Some say Hummel was one of them.
Wasn't Cole's father a former Illini football player? I was told Guenther pushed Weber to offer Bill Cole and Weber didn't think that he needed two of the same type of player. In hindsight he should have taken both and let them battle it out.

I’m sure that’s true. Weber broke no rules. The Derrick Rose and Weber conversation on the U of I campus is classic. Rose was an Illini if one thing would have happened but Weber wanted nothing to do with it. No college basketball coach was cleaner than Weber. Really probably too clean to coach at high D1. He was at a big disadvantage.
Also, a certain shoe company allegedly sent $200K to Gordan's father.

Uhhh…I hate to be a downer after an awesome win. But isn’t that one of the jobs we keep hearing he wants? I guess you should ask Brad’s agent?

When Brad Underwood goes to the Final Four and a National Championship game like Bruce Weber I will apologize to Brad for comments. Until then all the Brad is the greatest basketball coach in the History of University of Illinois people need to shut the hell up. Brad hasn’t done a damn thing at the University of Illinois that Lou Henson didn’t do, that Bill Self Didn’t do , That Bruce Weber didn’t do. It’s ALL recency bias for you Underwood sycophants.

You mean something like....beat scUM 9 straight times?

Shouldn't you be guarding a bridge somewhere?

I always thought Weber should have taken both. I just got the impression Bruce was never very high on Hummel. It seemed like talent evaluations maybe weren't his strength. That's my impression..

How about Harry Combes? Twenty years. Four Big Ten Championships, three final fours.

Lon Kruger, Bill Self, and Bruce Weber all contributed to one of the greatest runs we've ever had. However, neither Self nor Kruger stuck around and Weber couldn't win at a high level with his own players.

btw, Who suggested Brad Underwood is the greatest Basketball Coach in Illinois history? He needs quite a few more good years to catch Combes and Lou Henson.
