Can we give Jay Wright a nice chunk of change and a sweet rental pad in order to be an in-season, on-campus only coach? Run practices, develop game strategy, provide in game adjustments?

No recruiting trips and pressure, no NIL management head aches. Just a coach when needed. Comes and go on a private jet when he wants to.

Well, it certainly is relevant to the conversation because folks on here have been banging on Brad for his lack of postseason success. I mean I would rather make it to the tourney every year and let the chips fall where they may than not make it all.
No it's not, and it's not even accurate. 4 years ago, Beard took Texas to the tourney and won a game in his first season at Texas. The year after he had a top 10 team that he was fired from. That team went on to make Elite 8 with a fill in coach that is likely going to be fired at the end of this season already.

He then went to Ole Miss, a team that had won 10, 13, 16, and 15 games in their prior 4 seasons and got them to 20 wins in his first season. He currently has a better record than us and will surely make the tournament this year.

So actually, he didn't technically make the tournament the year he was fired or the first year at a new school that was not in a good position. But he's actually made the tournament 2 of the last 4 years, other than that, you make a great point.

He didn't just pay players. He arranged jobs for their friends. He paid for apartments for their family members. He paid off an ex-girlfriend of a player in exchange for her silence.

You can't do any of that. None of that is NIL.The fact that you functionally don't have to any more doesn't make it legal. It just makes it obsolete.

I'd actually be ok with hiring him if we had an opening, because I don't think he'd do any of that stuff again in an NIL world and I have no illusions that out staff has never done that stuff. Of course they have, one way or another. But to day "it's legal now," is just not true.
I agree with what you are saying in that other forms of payment under the old system are still illegal, functionally they still serve the same purpose.

Old system is now obsolete, don't have to make up more compensation through different forms, but still the end goal is the same, compensate players for playing for your school.

I think we're on the same page, also no issue hiring him.

No

Okay, you convinced me then.

Let's just stay the course with Hamer and Baby Underwood then?

So are TV media contracts and the House settlement fallout.

Overall, it's fine to prefer one over the other but we are shopping in same aisle.
I will say as an X factor, as an Illinois fan, Johnny Orr was an Illini (and Taylorville grad). That’s a lean for me 😉

The reason for those was to establish that plausible deniability. Had today's rules been in place, there's no doubt that Will Wade would have just followed these rules.

The reason for the payments like this was to establish that plausible deniability. We don't have to like it, but it was basically working around the system. As long as the NCAA wasn't going to do anything about it (see - North Carolina's two decades of academic fraud), it was going to continue.

More interested than you saying Dusty May would most likely end up at Indiana or Illinois after this season (24 hours later his new contract with Michigan was revealed). Or as interested as North Carolina was in Brad (days later it was revealed that Davis received an extension)

1. No where did I say Dusty would end up at Indiana or Illinois … In fact I said that Dusty was a little ticked they gave Woodson another year instead of hiring him and idk if he’ll be able to get over that … Did I say Indiana would go after Dusty ? Yes … And they did … Why do you think Michigan extended him in year freaking 1 even though they’ve been absolute 💩 down the stretch ??? If we had to go into search mode would Dusty be a name even after the extension ??? Yes … He would … Josh likes the guy …

2. UNC was/is interested in Brad … That’s literally from Brad’s agent … Just because Davis got an extension doesn’t change that ? Lol … It’s UNC … They may say they’re keeping Davis now but if there’s a legit chance to upgrade ? And especially if they get absolutely obliterated by Duke at home on Saturday … Things can change …

You wanna come at me for what I put on here ? That’s fine … Just make sure you’ve got the facts straight …

@Indy Illini Fan what are you hearing on the goings on in Charleston? I seriously hope the team's four-game winning streak after they were already eliminated from OVC tournament contention doesn't mean that Marty's job is safe.

EIU is a tough job … I think it’s time for a change …

Tom is a smart guy … And there’s been some conversations I know that … He wants to be better than they are …

What if I told you players were getting paid nearly 6 figures to play for certain High Schools and AAU teams …

And it’s been going on FOREVER …

Grey wasn’t/isn’t optional … It’s just a matter of how dark you wanna go …

Hey, I absolutely believe it. I don't even have a problem with it.

It's just not the same as NIL, and I wanted to make sure that was clear. I think a lot of people misunderstand what NIL is, and saying what Wade did is "legal now" isn't true. I'm not making any judgments on what he did, just correcting a very common misunderstanding about NIL.

I will say though, it's a good thing for him that NIL came around because it doesn't seem like he was very adept at hiding what he was doing. I think sloppiness was a factor in him getting caught, where others have not.

The Will Wade's excel in the current environment. If what Whitman is proposing through the NCAA and Congress on governing fair-market NIL values and persecuting those that are not becomes reality (I have my doubts), then it will be a lot more challenging.

You do realize we got past the 1st weekend literally last season right? Right after winning the B1G Tourney Title?

And true, last season's success was definitely due to TSJ's greatness....now remind me who recruited the guy here and coached him into an All-American? Cause I remember TSJ only scoring 10 ppg at most and being a 3rd team team Big 12 level player before he got here.
We share a common goal, we both want this team to win and make a strong playoff run. If they succeed this year, it could indicate that BU is building sustained success. However, another loss in the first weekend would only reinforce a troubling pattern. Even some of the greats have struggled to close out games, so while BU is a good coach, I have doubts about his ability to elevate the program to the next level.

Very true. NIL is a bit "wild west" right now, which is why a lot of people seem to think everything that was once verboten is now A-OK. I'm not sure Whitman will get exactly what he's proposing, and he may not get anything from Congress, but I have a feeling at some point, someone, somewhere, will at a minimum start trying to enforce the rules already in place (yes, there are actually rules in place!).

I t has been 4 years since Chris Beard even got a team in the tournament.
I believe Chris Beard has the potential to be a better coach, but I can't overlook the domestic abuse allegations. Even though he was acquitted, that police report was truly eye-opening. I also strongly oppose comparisons to the TSJ situation—TSJ was falsely accused of something he clearly did not do, with absolutely no supporting evidence, whereas there was evidence involved in Beard's case.

You’re right … There is evidence …

“Chris did not strangle me, and I told that to law enforcement that evening. Chris has stated that he was acting in self-defense, and I do not refute that. I do not believe Chris was trying to intentionally harm me in any way. It was never my intent to have him arrested or prosecuted. We appreciate everyone’s support and prayers during this difficult time,” Trew’s statement said.

I have great respect for your basketball knowledge, but any man who lays his hands on a woman is simply unacceptable. After reading up on the situation, I can't imagine the university would condone such behavior.

For cases that reach the criminal justice system, upwards of 80 percent of victims “recant,” or take back, the story they told police, the judge, the domestic violence advocate. “Recantation” is often manipulated by the abuser telling the victim that the abuse wasn’t as severe as it was; holding out promise of marriage, of change, of rehabilitation; and by manipulating the victim into feeling sorry for him.

I had a conversation recently with a guy who played football at a well-known D1 powerhouse in the late 70s/early 80s. He was telling me a little bit about how they were paid. Given jobs that were effectively 0.0 FTE jobs with a salary, etc.

NIL has widened the gap between the big boys and most mid-majors and smaller schools, but it has closed the gap between the big boys with money who were willing to full on step over the line and the ones that had money but weren't so brazen in the past. I sort of feel like we were in that last category: had a lot of money potentially at our disposal but perhaps weren't historically willing to go full NCAA violation in the same way a team like Kansas or UNC were.

Dusty, the best HC who wins by four points or less (a win is a win is a win.)

I just don’t see how you can enforce “fair market value” on NIL. We all have a reasonable idea of what that must be, but there’s nothing stopping, say, Twin City Radiator from deciding — for whatever reason — that one Dame Sarr autograph session for $1 million brings that level of value. In fact, if that’s what the marketplace commands, that becomes fair market value.

Are they still a couple or did they part ways after the incident? I looked online but didn't see a definitive answer
