Here's my biggest question, and I'm guessing only the insiders will really be able to answer it - who drove the tactical changes on defense, particularly on how to defend ball screens?

If ANYONE on the staff had to step in and drive that change, then there is zero reason to retain Hamer. That's supposedly his baby. It's no different when you see a head coach step in and call plays in football, whether on defense or offense. If Hamer is the defensive game planner and someone else had to correct the issues, then there is no choice but to move on.

We have not been very good defensively all season. More than that, until the last several games there were no discernible adjustments to attempt to improve things. So if Underwood, Alexander, or Antigua came in and drove these changes (I'm assuming Tyler continued his work on the offense, but if he did have these ideas I'll give him credit), then what value does Hamer provide to the staff?

If Hamer was the one who drove these changes, I'll happily reconsider things. But I would be very surprised if that was the case. But, as I've said a lot on here, I've been wrong before and will be again.

Brad made the adjustments you’re seeing …

Along with some input inside the building and believe it or not, outside the building …

That information came from someone well connected with Texas … Those are the 5 names they’ve been focusing on …

My personal opinion, and just knowing all those guys … All 5 of them would listen …
As they should. There is never any harm in gauging information about a high-tier job (even if they ultimately have no real interest in accepting the job) from their end.

Not to mention, no current job is fully secured (especially if some posters on this board had a say in hiring/firing decisions).

It still boggles my mind that there would even be chatter surrounding Ben Johnson at Minnesota. I think he can flat out coach. Give the guy some resources and see what he can do.
If they do move on from Ben (I agree, I think he's a good coach), wonder if they go after Nico Medved (CSU). He's put some pretty good teams on the floor without access to much in the way of resources. Lots of connections to Minnesota.

I know coaches - particularly those who would rarely play each other - talk, so it's not overly surprising for me to hear that there may have been some outside influence.

Now, exactly who that "outside the building" source was may very well surprise me (and I DO NOT expect an answer on this, as I know you want to protect sources). I'll just have some fun wondering who that might be. :)

I love hearing stories of coaches being pissed off because recruits are asking for ungodly $ in the new NIL era, yet they go out and “listen” to offers even though the are under contract! Pretty hypocritical…

B10 is getting ridiculously competitive with 18 teams.

UCLA and Oregon are perennial top 20 teams.
For past 5 years Illinois, Purdue, Wisconsin and Michigan State have been all been in and out of top 10.
Michigan is greatly improved under May. Nebraska has improved significantly under Hoiberg.
Even Northwestern made NCAA multiple times.

The B10 and SEC TV contracts combined with large alumni base for NIL gives a financial base that is tough to beat.

Ben Johnson has only made one NIT in 3 years. He looks like at 15-16 he might make it again. The transfer portal and NBA early entry makes it tough to slow build.

I don't see any reason to give Ben a 5th year. There has been no upward trend and his recruiting has been mediocre. He need to lure Dain Dainja back to Minneapolis. It might be the NIL$ just are not there.

Loyalty, duh.

Just catching up...

1. I hear Schertz on the radio quite a bit and he doesn't seem like a guy who would jump ship this quickly. I know...talk is cheap...money talks.

2. I would love to see English at Tennessee. If nothing else as a big FU to mizzery. Although I'm sure he isn't thinking that

Every coach in America wants a P4 job … Schertz would listen to any of them …

I think Sean Miller is who Tennessee would target first … Then English …

I know UCLA has been pretty consistently good under Cronin but I just don't see them as being really dangerous. They dont seem to be big NIL spenders despite what their history would suggest(too much other stuff going on in LA I guess).

The only UCLA team I thought was dangerous was the Juzang and Jacquez team.

Oregon basketball also seems to play second fiddle to football despite Nike pockets. Altman is also getting up there and it's pretty difficult to upgrade from him from a coaching standpoint.

Jury is still out on May at Michigan. Izzo is getting close to retirement and I wouldn't want to be the guy to follow him.

Hoiberg will be back in Lincoln unless he decides to leave on his own

For those with a subscription to The Athletic.

Many of the usual suspects in this article - Kyle Neptune (Villanova), Porter Moser (Oklahoma), Rodney Terry (Texas), Fran McCaffrey (Iowa), Bobby Hurley (Arizona State).

I was surprised there was zero mention of Darien DeVries for Iowa. Jim Root correctly mentioned Ben McCollum being an Iowa native, but he didn't even mention DeVries' ties to the state (both familial and coaching).

Would be curious if you're open to sharing (or hinting) at who from the outside may have driven that change.

To the person who asked prior about "who" made the changes it has Brad written all over it.

Would be rather upset if Hamer is still on staff if there are coaches like Ben Johnson, Boyton etc available to add to that roster.

My biggest question mark is will TA be able to influence guys like Morez to take other options that may be on the table.

Returning a line up of Mo, Tre, Tomi and Kylan must be a top priority going into next year. Id imagine that recruiting is already taking place.

So does that mean all 5 candidates are also interested/have shown interest? Or just who Texas wants, not necessarily who they could get?
Although I’m not an Underwood fan I don’t see him leaving Illinois for Texas . Texas is not a basketball school . Football is king in the state of Texas. Texas basketball is Kevin Durant the end.
