If you're DeVries, do you take exception to being the "back pocket" insurance plan and try and get better from Iowa? Or is Iowa focused elsewhere?

DeVries won’t be caught waiting around … He’s working the Iowa job as well …

He can’t get caught waiting around then have to go back to WVU … That’d be worst case scenario …

What I’m hearing on IU as of this morning …

Dolson is swinging for the fences with the big names because he has a coach (who all of my sources believe to be DeVries) in his back pocket …

Dolson has been able to keep this VERY quiet so we’ll see what leaks over the coming days …
If I were DeVries (or really anyone for that matter), I'd go where I'm really wanted and am not the fallback option.

For those with a subscription to The Athletic . . .

Groce gets an "honorable mention" in the section about Bryce Drew as a current mid-major coach who has previous power conference head coaching experience.

Sometimes it pays (literally) to be the fallback and then go in an prove you should have been the top choice all along.

I don't really disagree with this, and I get that sometimes you'll "bet on yourself". But in the world of college basketball coaching, my instinct is saying that if you're the guy who's really wanted you'll get a little more leeway than if you're the fallback option.

I get it - sometimes, you get a Pete Carroll situation. But let's say you're Darien DeVries at IU next season, you have a season like you had at WVU this season (a real possibility), and (hypothetically) Todd Golden finally decides to leave Florida and tells IU he'd crawl on broken glass to coach there. Would you rather be there or at a place like Iowa where it appears he is the guy that they really want?

(Full disclosure that my scenario has a lot of hypotheticals in it, but I used that to illustrate my point).

Have we reached the point where hot-name coaches this cycle have requested <10 million NIL/year along with salary?

If I were Golden, DeVries, Beard...itd be my jumping off point.

I suppose it depends a lot on your goals. Do you want to be somewhere that can challenge for a conference championship now and then, but feel safe. Or, go someplace where fans expect to be in the national title conversation more years than not, who had fired your predecessors for not living up to it? However, in the second option, you should have all the financial resources necessary to have a chance.

Get ready for all the media members to take what I put on here about DeVries and IU and “break the news” … 😂😂

From what I’m told, expect an announcement this week …

Dolson is not having much luck with his big fish he was after … Can’t afford to tick off DeVries and then McCollum has another job lined up and IU is SOL … Have to make a decision by Thursday …

#164
So McCollum to Iowa then? IU's brand name still carries weight that a local son would turn down being the first choice at Iowa for being the fallback option at IU.

i imagine these coaches have thicker skin than turning down a job because they weren't the first choice.

downside is that one may not have the backing of all the boosters and make it harder to succeed but maybe that puts a chip on one's shoulder. i bet the money helps with that too.

Will IU fans have their pitchforks out for this one, or will they be thinking that this is a good thing?

I mean I’d say I’ve got a couple pretty plugged in people at IU and they’re saying DeVries is the guy …

IU fans will be cautiously optimistic if I had to guess … He’s a winner … But he’s done a lot of winning with his kid … Javon Small carried them this year at WVU … They didn’t even make the tournament and yes I know they should’ve but fact is they didn’t …

Chester Frazier at IU … That might be shock me more than anything …

Groce is probably just content where he's at, but I don't think he'd be a bad power conference hire. People do seem to forget that his tenure at Illinois was marked with a ton of bad luck with runnerup in recruiting races, injuries/player discipline, a cheap athletic department, the impetus to changing out of bounds forever. I think under the right circumstances, he can do well in a bigger location, he's clearly shown himself to be the King of the MAC.

The Driving Range south of town is quite the draw for us golfers

Don't necessarily disagree with any of this. As I see it, I'd want as much alignment as I could possibly have when taking on a position with that kind of visibility and pressure. It's less about feeling "safe and comfortable" and more about knowing I'd have the full support of my boss in a pressurized environment more than if I wasn't the first choice.

But like you said, money (both in salary and in NIL resources) can probably soothe a lot of those possible concerns.

But would a kid want to go to EIU for a year? Or Western? It would be a great strategy for a team like Eastern to have a couple of guys who aren’t ready for Illinois to play there. They become better with better talent. Would Illinois pay NIL money to stash a kid for a year at Eastern? Interesting question.
I would say it makes about as much sense as the current system does....just sayin

I mean, it's X. Anyone can say whatever the heck they want there with relatively little means to vet what is and iant trustworthy.
Just like any other public place where people communicate with each other. You always have means to vet what is and isn't trustworthy.
