For me, as just one Illini fan ... this isn't the point. It's about pride. If it within the realm of possibility to raise the money to get our current coach to stay, I don't want to be the type of program that loses a coach to ANYONE - not the Blue Bloods and especially not Texas. This idea that we should reasonably expect any Blue Blood to be able to poach our coach relies solely on Bill Self leaving for Kansas in 2003. However, he is the only Illini coach in living memory to voluntarily leave Illinois for another program, and he left for his literal dream job (I actually do take him at his word that KU is the only job he leaves for, just as Roy Williams isn't leaving KU for anywhere but UNC). In contrast to that perception, in the last 30 years we have swiped two successful coaches from big-time, historically relevant power conference programs - Kruger from Florida and Underwood from Oklahoma State. That speaks to the prestige of this job, and I want to (1) keep up that prestige and (2) get to the point where our own fans have enough confidence in our program that we EXPECT to keep our coaches.

This is about pride. I get that enough money can (at least potentially) sway anyone to go anywhere ... there is always the possibility that SMU's donors get together so much money that they can incentivize Scheyer to leave Duke and go there, lol. However, if the money is even in the same ballpark, we need to hold on to our coaches as a simple matter of pride that Illini Basketball is prestigious enough and relevant enough that we should never lose a coach that we want to keep. The programs we aspire to be peers with would never expect to lose their coach to Texas under normal circumstances.
Self verbally accepted the Arkansas job and when he went to tell Guenther, RG talked him out of leaving. Self thought that it would be easier to win with a different AD.
