Buzz has had reasonable success everywhere he has been. Just gets restless.

Marquette 6 years, 5 NCAA bids, one elite 8
VaTech 5 years, last 3 with NCAA bids (last one sweet 16)
TAM 6 years, last 3 with NCAA bids

Falls into the pretty good but not great coaching zone. The question for all of us is Brad similar level or can he break into the "great" mode ala Bill Self, Tom Izzo, Mark Few, Dan Hurley.... Consistently get to sweet 16 every year, multiple final fours and at least one NCAA champion.

I tried to prepare everyone for this weeks ago …

Texas A&M has been back channeling for a little bit …

They’re going to at least make a strong push for Brad … And if the numbers are what I’ve been told … Brad’s going to listen …

**This is not me saying Brad is leaving** … I reported on here weeks ago this was going to happen … This is not new news …
As I’ve said a lot on here, I’m not going to blow a gasket for whatever happens.

If A&M gives Brad an offer he can’t refuse, take the buyout money and showcase everything Illinois is now. This is a completely different program from the last time Illinois had a head coach opening in men’s basketball. I’m confident in Josh Whitman should the situation need it.

If Brad stays, then let’s back him and get back to once again being in contention for a conference title and get to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament.

Here we go again, Brad isn't even going to consider going to A/M.
I hope I speak for a lot of the board when I say this is going to be the actual concrete evidence I strongly rely upon to analyze any future claims of tension in the JW-BU relationship.

If this opening once again passes by with no BU involvement in the actual journalistic press (and I suppose no major contract extension or something on our end), then the stories we've been told about both parties in this marriage having eyes elsewhere have just been flatly proven to have been exaggerated.

This is it, this is the one.

4 days ago after hearing he is checked out and needs to start working the portal and everyone is leaving - DAMNIT
Today after seeing the potential portal positives - Thank god

i feel like i always read on here (and elsewhere) that buzz always wanted to get back to his home state. he's there. i know indy says he wears out his welcome, but i still don't get this (and/or what i read about buzz and texas was wrong; or maybe he wanted the ut-austin job specifically).

It's one thing to be confident in JW, but another entirely to start a coaching search at this point in the cycle. Very likely a lot of the options JW had on his list have already signed elsewhere. Not to mention the impact on the roster for this upcoming season. Tomi and Boz follow BU to A&M, then what? So there goes your roster continuity, we'll be starting over again. No shot at big Z anymore. Dix and Sellers are probably out. What happens to Sarr? Not to mention that a new coach is always a question mark. Some moreso than others, but even hires that are considered home runs don't always work out. Especially when time is of the essence, as it would be with portal players making decisions. It's possible JW would be forced into making a quick decision, and may not be able to wait for his top candidates. Losing BU at this point would not be good, and nobody should be cheering for it (though a sizable portion of this board probably is).

Brad isn't leaving. Not sure why this board does this every single time.
I totally agree with you. My point is that "oh, his buyout was just too big, NEXT YEAR when Texas Tech or Oklahoma opens he'll bolt" is nonsense reasoning.

This board's obsession with this topic must have its rational endpoint right now, one way or the other.

(This board and rational in the same sentence, I know, I know)

Brad goes… we’re good

We’ve come a long way.
I don't see it happening but if it did the timing would make this a lot more like the situation leading to the hiring of Lovie Smith (having to find a replacement at a less than ideal time in the cycle) than like the situation that led to the hiring of BU or BB (where JW controlled the timing). Not an ideal situation no matter who the AD is, and I'm sure JW would rather not have to initiate a coaching search under these circumstances.

Buzz is a great hire for Maryland. Baseline competence, with a reasonable chance at tournament success.

Could have done much worse given the circumstances.

i mean, you must know. many years recruiting and then coaching in texas, plus plenty of this board remembers bill self leaving. different coaches and circumstances (and not saying brad is bill; i wish), but it makes sense why people ask.
