Was just trying to point out that when you ask someone about the 2000s Lakers the first people being mentioned will be Kobe, Shaq, and Pau. Or the 90s Bulls will be Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman.
Same thing with the Spurs, it's always going to be the Admiral, Duncan, Manu, and Parker.
If you bring up Duke you would get Coach K, or Izzo for MSU, Jay Wright with Villanova, Bobby Knight with Indiana, Self with Kansas, Williams with UNC, and so on before you get players.
It's just the nature of pro vs college sports that college sports coaches kind of become the program if they have enough success.
Best case scenario might be Boynton making a final four run with this roster.
As much as that thought makes me want to throw up.
I really do not want to see the offense that Schertz can cook up with those resources.
I think top college jobs are far more valuable with more job security than an NBA job so I’m surprised May would leave. Mavs must be paying him a ton more than at Michigan. You’d think Portnoy/Ellison would match if they really want Michigan to keep winning.
But that’s the thing. Once you’ve accomplished the ultimate goal, I think the boosters funding the players and coaches salaries move on to other things. It’s just natural in an environment where these boosters/NIL funders really aren’t getting any real monetary return.

Michigan won a national title. There is not one single Michigan fan that isn't thrilled that they picked up Dusty May for two seasons.
Not a single one.
Not to mention, the NBA is just a better job in general. The college grind never ends. When you aren't in season, you are running from high school gym to high school gym to see kids play, negotiating with your current and prospective transfer candidates, scheduling, glad-handing donors, running or attending workshops, etc.
In the NBA, most coaches just get to concentrate on basketball. There is a true off-season, where they may have a role in the front office, but they aren't (typically) expected to be the CEO. There are a lot more games, but that should be the fun part. While the lifestyle of high major college athletics has improved significantly, it still isn't the NBA...

Sorry to multi-post as I catch up this morning. IIRC, Kansas was Self's white whale that he actually landed. He grew up in the Big 8 when Kansas was the thing, wanted to play there and wasn't good enough (despite being HS POY in OK), and settled for OK State. His college career was contemporaneous with the Danny Manning KU squad that won the title in '88. It was unfortunate for us that UNC opened up in '03 and Roy bolted KU for it.

But on the flip side, those coaches can just deal with on court and player management. The player acquisition is the ultimate responsibility of other people (I know coaches will clearly have significant input).

There's 1 roster spot currently open as of right now. @PleaseMakeABowlGame referenced it yesterday in the Recruiting thread (above), but the only one that would probably make sense at this point would be Quinn Costello, considering he went to the same high school as Morillo. He would be an awesome piece to have for the future but I don't know where he would fit into our already loaded frontcourt, and I don't think that kid is coming to college to sit on the bench.
Otherwise I'm not sure there is anyone else that fits well schematically; small guards don't fit the current scheme (Cadeau, Cason, who would both be expecting a starting spot or near it) and IMO we have no use for another upperclassman big. I think the only reason you would bring in someone like Brandon McCoy is if there have been serious unexpected issues that have come to light after the first week of practice with the existing 2/3 guys we have.

Kruger was building a very strong program at Illinois when he left for the Atlanta Hawks job. He never made a secret of fact he wanted to try the NBA. The pay was much higher at the time $10M for 5 years guaranteed. He was making $750k/year at Illinois so he tripled his comp. He was not big fan of recruiting but excelled at X&O's and getting the most from his players.
I don't blame Dusty May for leaving. NBA is the pinnacle of basketball coaching. He already has a NCAA championship. He has nothing left to prove at college level.
The biggest difference is the 82 game regular season plus playoffs. College basketball ~26 game regular season plus tourney.

While Coach May bids a hasty adios and hits the Dusty Trail for Texas and the NBA, leaving his Maize and Blue team to pick up the pieces and deal with his broken promises (especially to new recruits and incoming portal transfers), may we Illini bask in the gloating bliss of knowing this fate could not have happened to a more deserving team. The only thing that could top this is if they brought back Juwon Howard, so we could be assured of beating the Maize and Blue like a rented government mule for several seasons to come.
