I agree this situation with AH was a rare exception and also a situation we can’t have again.

Many of us in the corporate world don’t experience much (if any) grace on a daily basis and when incompetence isn’t addressed, it makes us question leadership. However, BB’s 19 wins in 2 seasons speak for themselves. It’s really a bizarre scenario that’s hard for us to relate to.

I’m interested how JW and BB managed donors who were surely calling for change.
Please read….

One thing I shouldn’t have said was AH wasn’t competent. AH wasn’t the right guy but I think that was too harsh and wrong to say.

In fairness, many of us get promoted until we fail and we can learn from it…this isn’t the end of AH’s story. Best of luck to the man.

The famILLy environment impacted both sides of the ball. Do you think our Quarterback, who was largely responsible for those 19 wins, would have turned down more money elsewhere if it weren't for BB's approach to all personnel? The way Bret handled the Henry situation makes the corporate analogy work for all, rather than frog-marching him out the door at the end of the season. Heartless approaches like that cause people to cover their backsides rather than give it their all and go for broke

Henry wasn't able to handle the job--that was clear. In hindsight.

Bret gave him a shot at it and helped him get out of it when he didn't grow with the rest of the program. We've moved on. Time will tell if the next choice will be better. Onward and upward!

Trust the process...
Very classy and old school. It makes Bret different than most P4 head football coaches. I do think other coaches and players families are watching. For people who have character and christian values this is very important. For others this means nothing at all or they even think this kind of loyalty hurt the program. I prefer our coaches act this way even if we win a few less games. Jim Harbaugh is a heck of a football coach but you have to be exceptional to get show cause penalty from NCAA.

Urban Meyer - looking the other way with Zach Smith domestic violence arrest and Aaron Hernandez

Cool so we basically have no recruiters on the staff outside of stepp, arch and Parker. Cool cool. I’m sure I’ll get backlash for that statement but it’s clearly an issue right now.

bret has earned the ability to try this and we can then judge the results. But this is giving Arkansas vibes
Did you mean arch or art?

I think AHen was promoted just a smidge early, he was really good DB coach, but I feel like he needed maybe a bit more seasoning or a different role before being a DC in the B1G.

Getting experience as Passing Game Coordinator for Freeman is a good get. I would not be surprised if AHen is back as DC or coach in waiting in a few years. I know BB believes in him and he does have potential, just wasn't ready yet.

This is a great point. Couldn’t agree more. He’s a really good DB coach. Just was not ready to make the calls. Thing I’ll say about hauck is that he won’t be afraid. Henry felt afraid at times

Obviously it’s a lot easier to recruit to USC but I’m sure Bradford will be a good recruiter. Also by default Elliot has to be better than Discher. I would say Archie has been pretty good and recently Bart has stepped it up. RB coach needs to be able to go out and get some dudes

Wheatley and Parker would be quite the 1-2 punch for recruiting the state of Michigan.
Tyrone Wheatley is stepping away from his position as head football coach at Wayne State after three seasons.

The former Michigan running back resigned Tuesday after going 5-28 over his three-year tenure. The program reached its low point in 2025 under Wheatley, finishing 0-11 while being outscored 439-129.

I don't disagree with a single thing in the bolded. I have criticized our former DC who was just fired.

There seem to be a lot of people who think if you are critical of the program then you aren't an Illinois fan
I was critical of him also. I agree, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s called being a fan.

I just don’t get the point of saying “if we fired X or hired X” we would have been in the playoffs. It’s all opinion and it doesn’t matter b/c it’s over

Telling someone to pipe down is a very sorry excuse for debate, but it is also a form of speech protected by the 1st Amendment. Which means that the government can't curtail it (Dan can, by the way, as he is not the government). It does not mean that it can't be criticized. Any of this, including this very reply you are reading right now, can be criticized, cheered, mocked, liked, scolded. All of those responses are also free speech!
This would be better if it was posted in the “Free Speech” or “First Amendment” threads

Fair enough. Let's just say I'm a proponent of moving on when the results aren't there.
