Future Walk-On

Peoria, IL
It does suck that there are 356 DI teams besides us now and we can only lose players and coaches to like 5 of them and it still happens.

Perhaps BU is more savvy then we are giving him credit for... Correct me if I'm wrong but when he hired Chin I don't recall anyone saying this guy is an elite recruiter. Also, when OA was hired I do recall a lot of concern about this guy being just "bag man" and having a lot of baggage. Maybe BU knows how to hire good recruiters that fly under the radar for some reason or another.

A week ago, this board was in meltdown mode because "we couldn't land recruits". Then we get Podz, Plummer, and Trent and everyone is booking their final 4 tickets.

Speculation of staff losses and we're back to meltdown. I get the concern. I'm just as bummed as anyone. But let's see how it plays out. Who we fill in those roles is the key here. Underwood managed to snag Orlando and Chin when we were awful. Let's see what he does now that he has something worth selling

I believe if you sign a NLI, you are legally committed unless the head coach leaves or you petition the school and are granted a release. Just cuz the assistant who recruits you leaves doesn't mean you can too. Boo hoo. Tough noogies.
I guess you weren’t in the school of “if you don’t want to be here goodbye” school when it came to Miller. If they don’t want to be here and petition, I’m sure they would be let out.

Thanks a is big time college hoops. I’d rather be here than finishing 11-20.

BU will get his guys, and I’d be shocked if he hasn’t hasn’t already been talking to a couple and Whitman is ready to up the assistant pool $$.

The upgraded facility is going to be amazing. We’ll be more than fine.

This...

One reason I was pretty high on BU from the beginning was that he seemed to have the tenacity and the toughness that is required for an Illinois coach to be successful. For a number of reasons it is simply harder to recruit and win at Illinois... but it certainly is not impossible. Perhaps BU was built for such a time as this!

From Brad Underwood - Recruiting Update video 4/19/21:

“...We gotta find guys who ARE part of us – and WANT to become part of us.”

(He was talking about players. But this also could be his thinking as to Assistants as well.)

Question asked: ‘How important is it to keep the staff together?’

“I look at it every Spring as an opportunity. If we do our job and we do it extremely well, that’s a reflection of our staff... They should have opportunities to move their career along...no different than I did it, or anybody else in this profession...”

“As we continue to have success, you’ve always got to have a few things in mind as you encounter those things. We’ll be no different at some point...”

“We’re a Top Ten program. We should ACT like it. I’ve said since the day we got here. And we can’t just talk about it – and WANT to be...”

“We’ve got to continue to act like the ‘Dukes’ and whoever you wanna talk about... That’s my goal. That’s why I want to be here.”
(End of his quotes)

The bottom line? Keep heart, Illini Nation. As long as The Beloved has leaders who think like this, All Will Be Well. Create a vision and environment of Success and good people will find YOU.

One more quote to add. Not sure what kind of jump shot this guy had, but one great thinker: “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” ― Max Planck

In other words, you either look at all this as a terrible loss... or a great opportunity.
