Big news coming out of Charleston:
Not a surprise at all. While the team had a bit of success during his career early on including a CIT trip in 2015 which saw them defeat Oakland before losing to Evansville in the 2nd round, it had been diminishing returns in the time since. While they did finish in the top half of the West division during the time that the OVC used that format early on in Spoonhour's tenure, they only finished in the top half of the conference once after it went back to the old format. What killed the team this season was about a 13 game stretch in January and February where they were absolutely decimated by injuries. That coupled with the fact that the team failed to live up to expectations as they were picked to finish 5th in the conference in the preseason and had several returning players meant Spoonhour wasn't gonna have long to last if he didn't produce results. EIU didn't qualify for the OVC Tournament this year either. First time in 4 years that hasn't happened.
It will be interesting to see who Tom Michael hires for this job as his predecessor went the JUCO route, getting Spoonhour from Moberly Area Community College.
We already have one suggestion out there for who should be hired as the new coach at EIU:
