I haven’t scrolled through this thread to see if this has been addressed but Gentry 100% coaches....that’s why he’s here...he’s a genius X and Os guy who controls the entire offense now. He just uses the analytics to his advantage and as a way to see what we should be running in different situations.

Also wouldn’t worry about OA to NM....but he will have other head coaching opportunities this cycle or next that will be much more appealing to him. If you lose him or Chin you have to replace them with an ACE on the recruiting trail and there isn’t really a former Illini out there that fits that. Dee would be the best bet just because the Chicago ties.

Are any of OA, Chin, or Gentry fully content as a long term assistant on this staff to the point where they wouldn't have interest in attractive head coaching positions? Trying to find a silver lining of at least one sticking around long term as I expect this staff will often be in high demand if they are willing to leave.
If we're willing to pay football assistants top money why not basketball? With only 3 basketball assistants they're extremely valuable.
I found a 3 year old article and Kentucky was paying their assistants, 400k+, 500k, and 800k.
We're paying chin and gentry 315k and Antigua 475k. If you really want to keep Antigua, and I've been blown away with how good he's been both recruiting and coaching the bigs, we're going to have to get him in that 800k territory.
It isn't my money, so why not 7 figures to Antigua and 800 K to Chin and Gentry?
Well, the why not basketball is based largely on revenues, is my guess. That doesn't mean your numbers are wrong, but that's a significant driving force.
I don't know Antigua's state of mind about coaching. If he's pretty happy in the assistant role, 800 keeps most of the non P5s out of the equation if money is the issue. We'll never pay him enough to take the P5 jobs out of the equation in terms of both money, prestige, and ambition.
I wonder if we could do a big raise with a costly termination clause that makes it harder for other schools to hire him.
I have full confidence in BU being able to attract good assistants to replace any of ours who leave because our program is so successful every AD & program out there wants them.
You need to have faith in the ability of BU to not only coach and recruit players, but his ability to recruit coaches as well.

It'll be hard to keep him if his goal is to be a HC again. Chin will get HC offers in 2-3 years as well as long as we keep performing. Gentry will be the last to get HC offers just because he is so green but down the road I;d be shocked if he didn't become a HC.....dude knows his stuff.
It's the price of big time basketball. It's part of the reason there's not a lot of turnover in the assistants at the blue bloods.
Pay your assistants enough and win enough that they're happy, and hope that gets your assistants to only leave for big jobs.
You never want to stop your assistants from reaching their goals, but anything you can do to make them happy enough to want to stay longer is a good thing.
At least not anybody that's penciled in as a starter for the top 5 team the next year. The guys at the end of the bench? Ok, sure.
Agree with everything said here. I think Chin will be a name thrown around this year for a few jobs but nothing too serious yet. If OA wants to go coach, he will have the opportunity.

While the team had a bit of success during his career early on including a CIT trip in 2015 which saw them defeat Oakland before losing to Evansville in the 2nd round, it had been diminishing returns in the time since. While they did finish in the top half of the West division during the time that the OVC used that format early on in Spoonhour's tenure, they only finished in the top half of the conference once after it went back to the old format. What killed the team this season was about a 13 game stretch in January and February where they were absolutely decimated by injuries. That coupled with the fact that the team failed to live up to expectations as they were picked to finish 5th in the conference in the preseason and had several returning players meant Spoonhour wasn't gonna have long to last if he didn't produce results. EIU didn't qualify for the OVC Tournament this year either. First time in 4 years that hasn't happened.
It will be interesting to see who Tom Michael hires for this job as his predecessor went the JUCO route, getting Spoonhour from Moberly Area Community College.

I heard Deon say in a radio interview that only one coaching job would get his interest and that was working under BU at his alma mater. He in a nutshell said he would jump at the opportunity.

He's been retired from playing since 2016. He's actually working for the Bulls and was actually promoted from an assistant with the Windy City Bulls to the player development coordinator for the NBA Bulls when Donovan was hired.
Honestly, my guess is that given who the current AD in Charleston is, it'll likely be someone who at least has some U of I connection. Heck, he hired Matt Bollant as the women's coach at EIU after Bollant got fired at Illinois.
Being reported that NIU is hiring ASU’s associate head coach Rashon Burno as its new head coach. Recently told a friend that if Leitao got fired at DePaul, Burno would make an interesting candidate being that he is a Blue Demon alum.

would be interested to know what kind of role Powell has had in recruiting at Gonzaga. If OA were to leave, JH could certainly make up for it in the recruiting department if he is ready for a change of scenery/associate head coach role

You would think that after ~10 years working with Bill Self and his reputation as an ace recruiter that he would have secured a nice head coaching job already.
Donyell Marshall fired at Central Connecticut State. Never finished above .500 and was at or near the bottom of the NEC all 5 seasons he coached there.
