It’s not about whether or not you could pay him $2M. And it’s not about whether or not he adds $2M in value.
The question is, can you go find a guy for $800K who can deliver value that is within $1.2M of what OA delivers. If you can, then that’s a better value.

People often think their employer should pay them based on the value they create, but it’s not the case. You only pay them up to the amount that you think you could hire someone else of equal talent.

If we’re paying $800K for this role, we will get a solid replacement.
Please explain to me why us, as fans, should pay any mind or give a single crap about the athletic department saving 400k.

Based on what OA has brought to us in terms of big man development and recruiting, if we didn't attempt to match the 2 mil offer I'd be extremely disappointed.

Finding a better value makes sense when you can buy unlimited assistants. But we have a max # of assistants we can keep on staff per NCAA rules, so getting the very best we can in those positions becomes very important.

Ding ding ding. Also as the saying goes..."a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush".

Agreed.

Much like any other breakup, you may be really upset at first and feel like there's nobody else out there for you....until you find somebody else you catch feelings for.
I remember when Tony Yates left for Cincinnati, IIRC? I thought that was a big deal. Jimmy Collins filled that hole nicely.

I 100% understand where you're coming from. But you'd be hard pressed to find a top level college program to cheer for that doesn't sacrifice standards or morals to at least some degree. 99.9% of top level recruits come to school for one reason and one reason only, to play ball.

Michigan, Duke, Virginia are schools that you could argue have higher standards than our beloved Illinois, but they don't have these kind of qualms from their administration.
Disagree they're all better than us at it. Michigan? World Wide Wes?

Not gonna lie, this is a slap in the face to BU if Antigua really is gone.

Underwood took a flyer on him and revived his career when it was literally at gutter level. Guess that doesn't count for much these days.
It'd be pretty lame for Underwood to hang this over a guy's head. People are going to make the best decision for them. Do you stick with the employer that gave you your first big break?

Well, the rumor is $2M to OA, so they are saving $1.2M.

So the question is, are we better off paying the next best guy $800K per year for the next three years - with $3.6M sitting there to pay to other coaches, facilities, etc... or putting $6M into OA for those three years?

I don’t claim to know the answer, but if you think you can get someone close to OA value for $800K, you don’t pay OA $2M. You spend that $1.2M somewhere else.

This argument makes a lot more sense to me than the “you can afford it, so why not”. Appreciate the perspective.

I’d be disappointed if we offered an assistant 2 million!

I agree with this. It’s akin to Nike or Adidas competing for endorsements opposed to hiring an employee from a much larger pool of candidates.

WE have only won a few battles for 4 and 5 star kids. I thought everyone earlier was pointing out how good the staff was on identifying talent early before others got in on them and then they went up in the rankings. The portal is full with good players and there are good young coaches/recruiters who would give anything to be here on this staff. It will sting if we lose both coaches but oh well we regroup and move on. In a short time people will get excited about who replaces whom ever leaves! Go Illini !
That's the point. The staff that was so good at identifying talent, as well as recruiting and developing that talent, is being dismantled. And even "home run" hires often don't work out, because college basketball is a tough business, so we can't know for sure whether the replacements are good until we see the results. Status quo = good things. Change in status quo = ???. It is entirely rational to be concerned, and probably irrational to not be at least a little worried.
