also, those that assume we could just waltz in and hire roger powell have their heads in the clouds. he is arguably third in line at a new blue blood. they have their best recruiting class ever coming in this year. he will be up for a top head coaching position within the next couple of years. it wouldn’t make logical sense for him to give up a sure thing in gonzaga getting 30+ wins per year and a #1 seed

the only way Powell ever makes it back to Illinois is if we have an opening at the HC position.

if it turns out that OA and/or CC had one foot out the door, pretty amazing that we reeled in the guys that we did

Why not? Let’s say Illini are comfortable paying $800k hypothetically. What’s $2 million? As a vested interest in the success of the program and brand would you pay $1.2 million to for the benefits of keeping him?
I agree with the sentiment purely from a cost-benefit basis. The value that a guy like OA brings to the table in terms of better recruits --> better on-court success --> more ticket/apparel/etc. sales + donations surely exceeds the cost of his salary. The issue with paying that high a salary though is that you then need to compensate all your ACs more, otherwise there's a very clear imbalance that (I would think) would lead to some friction. A $100-200K difference in salary is one thing, but paying one guy $2 mil while the others make 1/2 or 1/4 of that would cause problems. So really, we're talking about dramatically raising all the AC salaries + probably the HC too.

Seems to me the schools won't actually be paying the kids. It will be outside opportunities through NIL... Like being on billboards, appearing in malls to sign autographs, things like that to get paid.
Gotcha. If they really wanted to put a halt to the under the table dealings they could just start banning the coaches/recruiters that are making these deals. Gotta make the penalty stiff on the people actually doing the leg work. I couldn't imagine trying to convince my child to go to a certain school because they were offering a bag of cash or incentives for me. Selfish parents if you ask me. Way to set an example in life.

It's just money y'all. That's all it ever is. Money. Sex. Power. It's always about at least one of those three things.
I'm willing to do what it takes

100%. And that means the under-the-table stuff will likely go on. But perhaps it won't be the dealbreaker it appears to be right now. If you're ranked #30 in your class and you go to KY with 3 other guys ranked in the top 20, your name/image/likeness may be less valued, relatively, than if you went to a different school (say Illinois) where you're the top ranked guy coming in and there's a rabid fan base willing to buy your stuff up. I could see NIL being great for a school like Illinois with a massive alumni base that loves bball (one reason, among others, that I want this to happen ASAP). Might be a wash or slight negative for a KY-type. Would appear to hurt a school like Gonzaga that doesn't have nearly the size or regional/national following.

I wouldn't go that far. He's from Joliet and his family is still there. I could see the value in making what would be a lateral career move but one that brings you closer to your family, particularly as your parents are getting older. I don't have any inside knowledge on this -- just speculating -- but I can see the potential justifications for making that switch. Heck, that's the justification Self gave for making that switch (whether that was truthful is another thing).

Have a great day fellow Illini fans. This is a defining moment for our program.

How many shoes are going to drop? 0? 1? 2? More?

This....I'm not a recruiting guru, but I would think that any college asst. coach would sell a recruit he is targeting, on the benefits of coming to his school, playing for the head coach, playing with other players already on the roster and the possibility of playing with future recruits and being apart of this particular program and what it could mean for them down the road.......now if that asst coach leaves and takes several recruits with him that really sends a bad message about our program.....an asst coach leaving for more money is one thing.....leaving and taking recruits with them is another......hopefully with exception of Kofi everyone else stays on board.....time will tell

OK, I emailed Whitman with this plan: Hire Calipari as associate athletic director in charge of men's basketball, give OA $3M and Chin $2M.

Problem solved, and you're welcome.
