My guess is Antigua and Chin are going to KY and 3-4 players will go with them. Don't want to be negative but it is possible. We need to divide and conquer at this point and way overpay Chin and keep him. Probably have to give up on keeping Antigua. He is a Cali-tucky man and keeping him is unlikely. Then we need to hire Roger Powell too. I'd overpay for him and make sure we get him as well. Today, a good staff is as important or more important than the head coach.

First things first, I would be careful what your posting here. Second, I wouldn’t believe everything your hearing on the Internet.

I hope you are right. I just don't like getting poached. I like Antigua and would like to keep him as well. I'm just afraid he is a Cali-tucky guy.

I agree with the sentiment purely from a cost-benefit basis. The value that a guy like OA brings to the table in terms of better recruits --> better on-court success --> more ticket/apparel/etc. sales + donations surely exceeds the cost of his salary. The issue with paying that high a salary though is that you then need to compensate all your ACs more, otherwise there's a very clear imbalance that (I would think) would lead to some friction. A $100-200K difference in salary is one thing, but paying one guy $2 mil while the others make 1/2 or 1/4 of that would cause problems. So really, we're talking about dramatically raising all the AC salaries + probably the HC too.
Maybe that is exactly the situation now, that BU is making at least 7 times what Orlando & Chin are while they are bringing in 90% of the player talent.

The Big Ten is a pretty good top-to-bottom conference in both revenue sports, but we have only one real top tier program - OSU football. Every other revenue program is second tier. Antigua pooped the bed at South Florida and had to re-prove himself at a second-tier program before being allowed back into the top tier. Returning to Kentucky is not so much a lateral move or even a promotion as it is Antigua getting off probation and being allowed to return.

It's about a lot more than money.

I wholeheartedly disagree. If Cal had an opening when OA was hired by us, Cal would have hired him right then and there. He's proven himself as a big time assistant. His stumble as head coach doesn't invalidate that.

There also is the possibility that KY are hinting/promising that Orlando would be next in line for the keys when Cal retires.

Doubtful. From what I’ve seen the fanbase is getting pretty tired of the Cal “one n done” model. They, like us, enjoy roster continuity and seeing players develop but were willing to pivot to that model provided they won big. Which the first 5 years or so happened, the last 5 years or so not so much.

So I’m guessing when Cal does move on they move away from the one n done model. Guessing someone like Holtmann or Wright would top their list (note, I know nothing about whether these guys would go to UK, just that UK would probably prefer to build their program similarly). And if they wanted to stick with the OND model, guessing they grab a guy like Oates or maybe even Drew, who has proven successful at the P5 head level.

Which is also why I’m a little confused why Coach O would move to UK now. The 2021 HS recruiting cycle is basically done. There aren’t many opportunities to grab an Anthony Davis or Boogie for next year. And it looks like UK has a good, not great class by their standards coming in next year, and is trying to rebuild with transfers. If they have another subpar year, which is entirely possible without a stable of top-10 blue chippers, Coach Cal’s seat could get quite warm and he may look for an easy exit which could leave his assistants high and dry. To me, UI is a much more stable situation and think he would be better off staying here until the right HC opportunity comes along.

Unless UK is ponying up 7 figures. In which case, I say go get paid.

The stakes aren’t the same but at least the Illini fans are handling this better than the Brad Stevens and Indiana rumors.

Brad had to publicly reject them twice and call himself a “mass hole” to put an end to the rumors, and they still kept hoping.

We all knew (or should have known) that OA was gonna be leaving at some point. Now I assumed it would be for a head coaching gig, and was cautiously hoping we'd get one or two more years from him, but I'm not shocked he is leaving. And no one should be. Brad is and was probably always prepared for this day.

While it sucks that he might be leaving for another assistant coaching job, but money talks. Can't blame a guy for getting paid. Hopefully, he at least gave us a chance to match, and if we couldn't/wouldn't, then I'm happy for him.

Now losing Chin and OA at the same time would hurt. Again, I expect him to leave at some point, but at the same time as OA would not be ideal.

I guess I understand OA leaving for more money, but how often does it work out when you take a job again that you've already left once? I'd have to have more than just my old job back for this to be anything but a backward step. But maybe that's because I'm old and I've tried to go back in time too many times myself (and I've never been offered a boatload of money).
I went back to a job "to go back home", and it did not work out well. Things had changed there, I wasn't nearly as effective. I guess that is why the say "you can't go home again".
