Top 50 Impactful AC's (yes...Chet is on there)
A lot of intriguing names on this list. Go get 'em Brad and Josh! Sounds like the assistant salary pool has been increased based on the numbers that were being discussed to retain the departed assistants. Use that money to bring in quality replacements.

From reading the last ten pages. It seems as though Chester "Chet" whatever the heck u want to call him is the new Chin replacement. Jamal is purely a replacement for Gentry if he elects to return to his alma mater. Mennenga, I pray, is the OA replacement. I want Tre Mitchell, but Tony Bergeron is too great a price.
I think Geoff Alexander will be the replacement for Gentry.

Don't worry about that.

No Irvin will be hired as an assistant coach as long as BU is the head coach
Seems to me that the hiring of Corry Irvin as women's AC will placate the Irvin clan. They seem to be all about family and would be hesitant to screw over the employer of a family member.

I am not sure that Chester has cultivated some of the areas that we need to recruit. I'm sure he is a competent recruiter...maybe even very good. But he also has not really been at a school at this point where he's been able to reel in some real high level guys. If you are hiring for recruiting ties, I can't imagine any coach from KState or VaTech would be the way we would want to go. Also, he would be leaving the east coast where he had wanted to be to come back to the Midwest and other than this being his alma mater and maybe money, I am not sure what the draw would be for him to leave VaTech.
apples and oranges. Yes VA tech is in the ACC but it is a far cry from Illinois. Chester can walk around VA Techs campus and not even be recognized. The fan base at Tech wouldn’t mind getting rid of basketball all together as long as the football team does great. Not good but great. Tech people are a very unique fan base.

I can’t confirm nor deny since the job openings haven’t even been posted….but where there’s smoke there’s….

...a much smaller, nearby university getting hit hard with minor infractions?

Hire the best person/people for the job(s). If he is the best person, but that upsets other Chicago programs, then so be it. In my opinion, at least.

but if it's part of the job to build relationships, especially with chicago programs, then is he really the best person for this job?

Doesn’t sound like any of the Irvin’s are being seriously considered and I think that’s right. There is some serious talent in the MIF pipeline right now and even with an Irvin on staff, I would still take “the field” vs. UI, particularly if the field also includes G League Ignite. And even if we did land a couple, they are probably only around for 1 year, 2 years max. Not worth an AC position IMO.

I like the way we are building the program with top 50-100 guys who will probably be here 2-3 years minimum. I think we should continue to target players at that level and believe that is more than achievable with new ACs and more sustainable in the long term.

Would be interested to know if any of the coaches being considered have any Caribbean connections. Absolutely love the players we have been getting from there and hope it can continue.

Why would they do that? Already have him on staff and he isn't a recruiter so what benefit would they gain promoting him to an AC?
Because it might be the best thing to do? I would think if he’s not promoted he might look for an AC position. He’s a proven commodity, especially with Brad.

May not happen. But it’s very reasonable if it does. I know we all want fresh faces with new recruiting ties. But promoting Alexander might be wise too.

Can I ask what this is based on? He's in a non-recruiting role now, so is this opinion based on his time with Evansville and Eastern Illinois?
Might be a comment about how bad of a recruiter Gentry is. Great at Xs and Os; lacking in certain soft skills?

I suppose. But if thats all it is, hardly a strong endorsement of promoting Alexander.

Based on this and other comments I gather illini0440 has a negative opinion of Gentry. And maybe there's good reason, I'm not in the know and don't have strong opinions either way. It does seem BU likes him and has a positive opinion of him, and a history with him.

Maybe time to throw Robert Smith's name in the hat.
Why? Hiring Smith would drive a wedge between the Illini and other Chicago basketball coaches. The same issue with another AC with MIF ties. Meanstreets has more talent than MIF and Illinois doesn't get anyone from that team. Time to hire an assistant with Chicago ties, but not identified with any AAU program, such as Robinson from Ia. St. or Anderson from DePaul.
