You don’t hire people simply because they are alums and aren’t a threat to leave. You hire the best people . Being an alum is a plus . Im sure Whitman isn’t “just hiring a guy that won’t leave”. You hire experienced people of good character. Frazier fits that .
I agree with all of that......and I'm sure he has great character. But.....does it make him a great coach? Is he a "great" recruiter? Or......could we do better?

Lost me, too. Who is Mendenhall?

I'm not saying I want Chester, or don't. However, if you put his resume down next to Chester's with no names on it, I would bet the majority of people would pick Frazier, prior to Illinois.

Lot of good bball players, if not more in Baltimore, D.C., Virginia area than Chicago. Frazier has knowledge around those parts of the woods.

Chin was the connection for Ayo, not a lot more at the time. He developed into a little more, but wasn't wasn't a standout recruiter when he came.

We should trust the process and those that know a little more about how things work behind the scenes.
Edit: put his resume next to Chin's

I can imagine on many a D1 campus, conversations going something like this. "Why don't we try to hire BU from Illinois? 4 years ago that place was a double-wide dumpster fire. I mean he's that tough, no excuses kind of coach and yet the players love him! They were having a lot of fun out there on the court especially towards the end of the year. And their players improve year over year."

"There's no chance... BU loves Illinois and is intent on building that program into a monster".

"Then why don't we try to hire his assistant coaches. Somehow we've got to get that kind of culture into our program... A tough old school approach that current players really love. Don't forget what they did to Michigan on the road after their best player was sidelined. On top of that they have two seniors coming back for a fifth year!"
I agree with this. To take it a little further, when JW hired BU four years ago, no one had any idea that was coming. If I recall, everyone was talking about Archie Miller and others not named "Brad Underwood". I think we all agree it has worked out well. When a program gets good, assistants are lured away in large part for the reasons Indy says in his last paragraph. We are definitely getting noticed. And, IF we end up losing one, two or even three assistants to other programs, I have to trust that, like he did by finding and bringing BU here, Josh AND Brad will find and bring in guys who are just as good and will continue to build the program and not lose any momentum....whether that's Powell, Chet, Dee, Mennenga or someone we are not even considering or thinking of.

Yeah but you also just said that Podz is on the same level as Ayo, so there’s that.
Ha ha. I’ll own that. Also admitted later to some hyperbole. ;) it was a long day yesterday.

i think Podz as a JR can be all big ten and maybe AA caliber. Again maybe a bit of hyperbole. But I think he’s going to be a big time scorer and Underwood can showcase him similarly to how Ayo was showcased this last season.

This is what I am struggling with. We are coming off a season where we basically won the B1G, won the BTT, and were a 1 seed in the dance and seem poised to maintain our momentum. So I ask myself how many comparable teams in similar situations would lose 3 assistant coaches to non-hc moves when money ultimately doesn't seem to be the issue? It makes me think that the underlying issue is BU and that scares the hell out of me.
If BU was an issue, they wouldn't be poaching his assistants.

Our success last season (until the Tournament) may have led the ACs to think that their stock had risen as high as it was going to at Illinois. Assuming the player departures result in a less successful season next year, the assistants might not want to ride the roller coaster back down, even if only for a season or two. This isn't a knock on Underwood, who's done a great job at Illinois, but I could be a while before we start two All Americans again.
AC’s could be thinking:

“buy low, sell high....”

I hope not, but maybe they have some inside knowledge of how things might go next season in the post Kofi/Ayo era we are about to embark upon.

To all those questioning, or saying "meh" to Chet Frazier as a new AC....it's a truly laughable take.

For those of us in the laughable position of not seeing why we should be excited about Chester coming in as AC can you enlighten us to why this is a slam dunk?

Alumni with p5 experience as an assistant coach at KSU under Weber and VaTech. So that's not nothing. But it feels like a downgrade from OA/Chin/Gentry. Maybe downgrade was inevitable, but it doesn't scream great hire unless alumni was one of your criteria.

Looking forward to getting excited about Chester coming back.

I'm honestly expressing a lack of knowledge on the matter. Can someone who thinks this would be a knock out hire point me to why they think that? Even on this board, for the last couple weeks, with all the talk of bringing in an alum, I don't think Frazier's name came up until this weekend, though there was tons of talk about Powell. I'm open to being convinced Frazier would be a great hire, I just haven't really seen any reason other than he has an impressive title at Virginia Tech. Is he a great X's and O's guy? Has he successfully recruited some top-50 guys I'm unaware of?

Edit: Just realized Poe's Law posted pretty much the same question

I didn't say it was a "slam dunk"...and I don't think anyone else has said it was a "knock out hire". I promise you Chin and OA weren't "slam dunk" hires when they were made here either.

I said Chet and Mennenga would be fantastic additions.

Chet has an outstanding background, he is an excellent person and has a longer CBB background than Chin did when we hired him.

So my laughable take comment is aimed at the "meh" and "not excited" for Chet to return here is simply meant to get those to step back and give Chet the benefit of the doubt, instead of comparing him to our current opinions on Chin and OA.

We see so many comments about bringing back our alums as coaches, and then the one with arguably the best coaching history so far is named...we get "meh" and "not excited".

Chet deserves more respect.

100% not a BU issue. Both OA and Chin have a ton of respect for Brad.

"Even we turned down KY" would have been a fun one liner in the recruiting pitch to 5 stars that were also being courted by KY...

I agree with all this. But I also see no credible info out there that says Mennenga is a legit candidate for one of the openings. Might be wishcasting here.

OA was unquestionably a slam dunk hire.

I mean, OA was a pretty slam dunk hire at the time. Chin was a big unknown.
