I don't know if this is true or not, but reports like this do not help. Nothing makes a job look more unattractive than a list of candidates who didn't take it.

if you were interviewing for a job, would you really base your decision on speculation on what others who were offered the job did? seems a bit strange. What others that were offered the job would be way down on my list of influencers to my decision given they likely had little to no additional information than what i have regarding the job itself.

perhaps the leaking of information in the first place could point to an issue...but i think JW/BU have been better than most in that department historically.

I get that Illinois basketball is a more attractive destination now than when Underwood took over, but don't forget that his initial staff was a holdover, a recently fired mid-major coach, and a Chicago connection with a light resume working at a mid-major. He didn't exactly have to pry away established P5 guys. This offseason is a whole different ball game. Trying to pull guys with years of experience at places like UConn, FSU, Florida, and even Creighton is no walk in the park, and most of those schools will be able to match, or at least get close, to whatever we offer.

I wonder if the timing really hurt us. Most of the coaching carousel had already been in motion by the time OA and Chin left. Pulling Chester home was a great initial hire, but now comes the true battles. Others would know better than me, but what about assistants at schools with coaching changes: Indiana, Texas, Marquette, Penn State, Minnesota, etc? You'd think there would be some good guys working at those places that need jobs or would potentially leave a place they just signed on with before investing too much time, especially if Illinois is the more enticing and higher paying option.

Yes. If a series of candidates with qualifications similar to mine had turned a position down, It would absolutely be devalued in my eyes. A guy I used to work with would say, "We've got to get somebody into that office. Empty offices start to stink."

Social media coupled with the intense interest in revenue sports means that communications meant to be private find a way of getting out. But even without that, the amount of time the position remains unfilled tells prospective candidates that they aren't the first (or second...) person contacted.

I doubt that guy you used to work with is now making $3.5 million per year. Just a hunch.

Sure. I generally agree with what you’re saying...except the empty offices stinking part. Don’t really get that.

but if someone comes to offer u a job and, like u said, information about the job is pretty well known, why would you need to know who else turned that job down? Especially if it’s just a couple of people. Everyone has their own circumstances and I know my qualifications and worth pretty well - better than most anyone. So I don’t need to know what other people have done or how many people have turned it down. Seems like a pretty irrational way to make a decision.

What are the options now? Assuming Alexander slots into Gentry's role, we need a final assistant. Legitimate question: Has Brad and Josh considered and/or contacted Brian Randle? He is coaching in the NBA (Phoenix Suns). That is assuming he'd be open to coaching in college. Not just any college, his Alma Mater.
If you ever have to say “Legitimate question” before you ask the question, is probably not a good question.

LSU? I get wanting former UI players for AC roles, but Adam Miller???? Not enough (any) coaching experience for my tastes.

Probably retired. But you're right, probably not $3.5 million when he retired. High six-figures, though, which is pretty good money for the real world. (College sports is not the real world.)

From your time anchoring the news on WFLD or on Channel 2?

I haven't yet been convinced that coaches aren't thrilled to come to Illinois. I, too, would like them to hurry up and hire someone, but it's not always a fast process to get the right someone.
They likely could have hired quite a few of those interested coaches by now. The fact that they are shooting extremely high effects the results. I'm not concerned. They will get a great AC to go with Frazier.
