The level of intensity over Alabama football is insane.
Yep, I lived in Tuscaloosa for two VERY long years and can confirm this and then some.
To get slightly back on topic, they don't much care about BB there.
We could probably poach one of their BB AC's easily. LOL

So Illinois UNDERVALUED their assistants... is that how to read losing 3 assistants?

From 2017
"Underwood has $850,000 available to pay his three on-court assistants"

So that's 3 assistants splitting 850k

2021 - I guess we learned something.
assistant 1 - Chester Frazier +500k
assistant 2 - ?
assistant 3 - ?
Pretty sure those numbers are outdated now. I’d guess the pool is a bit less ‘confined’ at this point.

edit: to clarify I’m sure there is still a cap, but it will feel less confined relative to this number.

I've been thinking about how silly the meltdowns have been about hiring our assistant coaches and two things came to mind.

1) When Groce was let go and we hired Brad, I don't remember anyone worrying about who the assistants would be until after he was hired. Until Brad leaves he will be the focus of Illini basketball.

2) I am fine with him taking his time to find the 'right guy.'

Now, as an interested outside observer ... when the frick is he going to announce someone!

Umm gentry was a white dude..... Alexander replaced him and is a white dude. I’m missing where there is a change
But Gentry did not recruit and was an X's and O's guy. Alexander did not recruit and is an X's and O's guy. They cancel each other out.

Its fair to suggest hardened fans have expectations based on the Groce hiring process (and lets be honest Beckman among others as well). The previous AD set our athletics program back years. This is a different group in charge now however and despite Lovie not working out, at the time it was a brilliant and exciting move. Coming off a bball big ten tourney and big ten championship* (we played the entire season) and despite overhauling an entire team with unranked recruits snd transfers initially, im going to sit back and relax and expect only a quality hire once negotiations are through.

I’m also inclined not to think Whitman and Underwood are hitting it out of the park. We’re only talking about this because they went 0 for 3 on retaining ACs. And I don’t like hearing that losing ACs is part of being successful. How many successful programs lost their entire staff?

This is fixable, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a problem.
And I will bring this up for the 3rd time because you folks have pooh-poohed it each time. It can be offered as arguments that the WIVES prefer not to live in Chambana, and/or the assistants chafe at working for Brad Underwood (and Few and the guy at Kentucky are easy-going and great to have a beer with).

nope

Gentry was primarily a coach, but he did recruit. He's responsible for landing Goode.

The difference between Alexander and Gentry, is that Alexander is an experienced recruiter, with tons of connections, and actually enjoys it. Alexander is a net gain.

You’re a weird human.

also i can’t express enough how much I DO NOT want Jamaal Walker back here. He was here during some of the worst stretches in our history and to act like he didn’t play a part in that is naive. Come on people, have a little more imagination than retreads and alums.

Are we forgetting Gentry left the staff before? He served an operations role. Then Gonzaga offered a similar role. He left. Then Underwood offered to promote him to an assistant role. Now back to Gonzaga. This isn’t really a surprise to anyone. His heart has always been at Gonzaga. He’s the only assistant that it wasn’t rumored that we negotiated with

So, is that secret flight still circling the runway, or do we have touchdown?

So, I'd say, as long as we do very well, not necessarily exceptional mind you, This coaching trade situation will end up being a win. If: Frazier>Chin and Alexander> Gentry.

The comparison was originally between Alexander and Chin recruiting and that Alexander would be a big improvement over Chin. I agree with the post pointing out Chin's comparative advantages in recruiting.

Wait. You’re leaving Antigua out of the equation and downplaying that Alexander was already on the staff though he may be on the right seat on the bus now.

A great recruiter for that final spot would be nice. But if that coach is also a big man specialist who can develop frontcourt talent that would make this whole offseason feel more complete. Are there any cerebral bigs who would be attracted to the Asst HC gig?

It is pretty obviou that Frazier replaces chin and alexander replaces gentry. Not fair to compare chin and alexander other than they are both from the Chicago area

This is called "career advancement", and is how it is done in this profession.
