So, question on the third AC. It’s been speculated on here that the current AC may still be coaching in the NBA playoffs, but would that really keep a coach from leaving? Just thinking about all of the ACs in college football who get a better job offer and don’t coach a bowl game. Presumably, the AC position at Illinois is more critical to leave unfilled because of the 247 nature of recruiting. And I think an NBA team should get along just fine without one AC. Particularly an AC that’s farther down in the pecking order, which is presumably who would leave for Illinois (ie not a Darvin Ham or Adrian Griffin, who probably make too much money and are NBA HCs in waiting).

The NBA theory makes sense on the surface but not sure it holds up to scrutiny. Hopefully this is all moot soon. Go Illini!

if you’re an NBA AC and you believe your team has a legit shot at a Championship, you’d be crazy not to stick around a few more weeks to share in that victory and add a ring to your resume.

Has Underwood even hinted that he is even a little surprised, taken back, shocked, or dismayed that they haven't hired a third assistant? I'm not going to worry until he does.
Yes, he is going to be quick to come out and announce how shocked he is that he keeps getting turned down by candidates that he is interviewing and everyone should panic. That press conference should come by next week

So does Brian Randle have any knowledge of the college recruiting scene? I still think they will save money for the AC3 position and try to find someone next year!
If it is Randle, and he has a desire to get in the college game, then I have a feeling he will work hard to make it happen for his Alma Mater. Every coach has to start somewhere and obviously the Suns saw something in him or else would not have given him an opportunity. If he was good enough to get in the coaching ranks of the NBA, I feel like we should give him a chance.

He has to start somewhere, should we want him to go from the Suns to Lake Land College to get his recruiting shoes filled?

Not jumping on you jitter23 but many think we have to hire someone that has been recruiting for 15+ years! Again, these players are 16-18 years old and want someone they can relate to, someone relevant. I would venture to guess that an NBA Assistant coach is more relevant to them than the an Assistant Coach at (insert nearly any Division 1 school). I watch more NCAA basketball than any other sport and couldn't tell you more than 5 A.C.'s across the country. The only reason I know them is because we have talked about them on this thread for the last 2 months.

I believe we can do much worse than Brian Randle and I'm sure we can do much better, but I think it's also important to those that are in charge (BU, JW, DIA, and Boosters) that we get some people on board that want to build a sustainable program with coaching chops, loyalty, and ethics.

The difference is that teams are going for the championship. bowl win or no bowl win, it's not a huge deal. An NBA championship is.

I'd be curious to know how many AC football coaches left teams in the BCS championship field.
Didn’t one of Bamas coordinators leave during a playoff run? Not saying it wouldn’t be a draw to try and win a championship, just that I think it has happened before.

Nah. I'd rather someone who HAS been recruiting for over a decade, has relationships in cities and within AAU. NBA guys do nothing for that, and while I'm sure some high schoolers may know NBA head coaches (I don't) how many know their assistants? I watch a ton of NCAAB and zero NBA. I'm also not sure how much loyalty you're going to get long term from someone taking a break from the pros to be a college assistant, they'd have to have had some pretty bad success at that level.

Hinting would be the opposite of that. He would be saying things about how hard it is to get three coaches at the same time, etc...see the difference?

Do you have a comment or just a snarky gif? My point was that jitter is taking a stand that we are not hiring a third AC. No one else thinks that is true and I don't either. But if he is right, then we are all wrong. So tell me what your point is. Or do you just think your little picture is sooo witty that you couldn't wait to get likes from others who apparently couldn't comprehend my point? As an aside, when did this board turn into twitter? I left twitter because of how everyone tries to pick fights and, thanks to posters like IlliniKat91, that is what this board is becoming. I snooped here for years and it was never like this. Finally joined and all it is is fighting each other and insulting each other.
Lmao Kat didn't even respond to your post. They were responding to jitter. Sooo...

Dont know if Randle is AC3 in waiting but believe he could be a good add IMO.. His 3 years as asst in NBA had been focused on player development...and any college asst coach who can talk first hand about NBA players like Booker and Chris Paul and their work habits and mental focus should get plenty of recruits interested in listening to him.

BTW I dont think Chin would have qualified at Illinois or KY for your "..HAS been recruiting for over a decade.." rule.

Chin rode the coattails of a few. Not sure what, or that he really offered a whole lot. Once UK is done with him, it will be interesting to see if/what he will be able to do in recruiting, or as a head coach at some critter school

And the extra bonus money as well

I’m not questioning the posters who‘ve made the comments, but I do find it confusing that I never heard negative comments about Chin until he left. Now I wonder why he wasn’t fired.
I agree...I think Chin was good for Illini and served us well.

I can also understand animosity over Chins lack of loyalty to Illini, given BU gave him a big career break...

If it is indeed Randle, we aren’t going to have the answer for a while.
Well, numerically........Suns, Nuggets, Clippers, Jazz, 76ers, Hawks, Bucks, and Nets and they usually carry up to 5 Asst. Coaches. So, if correct, we have approximately ONLY 40 candidates possible. AND since the top assistants are looking for a head coaching job in the NBA, I am going to say that we have about 24ish candidates to choose from. Nuggets are likely to go down first.........possibly tonight. Nuggets down 5 with 8:30 to go. So, let's say that if we don't have a press conference this week, we're down to 21ish candidates from the NBA??? Simply numerically speaking.

Hiring Randle for AC in any other year would be okay, but when you are putting 3 new coaches out on the recruiting trail, you need all 3 to have contacts to maximize recruiting quickly.

I see your point that hiring someone with established connections would be an immediate foot in the door to help with quick recruiting. But I think an NBA assistant, especially one on a playoff team, would get the attention of any kid he spoke to. It has to make Chester's job a heck of a lot easier as well. For him to be able to tell the kids he already has connections with that an NBA level assistant is on the staff has to be a big plus. I feel like a guy with some connections coming in is less impactful than a guy who can go anywhere and immediately establish one with kids wanting to play in the NBA. But I also wasn't high on Mahomes out of college or the Cubs bullpen this year, so what do I know.
