two years of coaching in that league theyre in qualifies him for P5 ?
how did that work out for Scott Frost going 13-0 at UCF when he went to the big stage ?
well, not sure what anyone means by "coaching chops". If it's experience, then you're right. If it's knowledge and skill, I'm not sure if we really know. And as you say, finding out that someone doesn't have it can be very expensive.

If your point regarding Frost, who had experience as an assistant at Oregon prior to taking the helm at UCF, is that most coaching hires don't work out, in general, I couldn't agree more. It's tough to turn a program around and most openings exist because the program is not in a good place.

I don't know why that should equate to Deion being less likely to succeed than the typical coaching hire.

well , to be fair , most head coaching hires at age 45-48 have 22+ years of coaching experience, at positions and as a coordinator .

does that alone predict success ? of course not , but I’ll take that over a former “great “ player with just 3 years experience

I mean it depends on the guy, right?

Tony Petersen is the same age as Deion and has over 30 years of coaching experience including as an OC at many different stops. Would you rather have him? Of course not.

I remain pretty skeptical of Deion at the top level, not least of which because some of his novelty goes away if he's coaching in the South among other guys who are celebrities by virtue of their coaching positions.

But even if he were an unknown named Leon Sanders he'd have caught our attention with what he's done at JSU. And unlike Leon Sanders we know Neon Deion can handle the limelight, which is part of the gig.

I dunno, he's a weird case, hard to extrapolate broad principles from despite everyone's efforts here.

Im talking DI college experience, not Pop Warner.
For Christs sake, Ive got 18 years of Pop Warner / Bill George League experience
HS level does not equal college I'll grant you that, but I don't think it equals Pop Warner either.

I just think it's odd so many are discounting the possibility Deion could succeed when coaching success is notoriously difficult to predict. There are so many failures who were great hires on paper by any conventional notion of what works in college football. The odds of Deion turning GT into a powerhouse are slim. Those odds are slim for anyone who would take the position though. I don't think anyone has actually cracked the formula for what makes a successful college football head coach. Otherwise why are so many programs paying so much money to hire subpar coaches?

Looking at it from the outside, Deion has A+ levels of charisma, personality, and leadership skills . IMO, either you have those traits or you don't.
The job responsibilities between assistant and head coaches are also completely different. Calling offensive plays as an OC is different than in-game decision making. I'm not sure why he couldn't recruit great players and great coaches if he committed himself to the task. Some coaches can't do that no matter how hard they work or how much they want it.

Agreed. And I just watched this lengthy interview about what he's got going on at JSU, from the perspective of a couple of young entrepreneurs. Coach Prime has a universe of experience that he can speak from, that nobody else can match. He went from an HBCU to the NFL and MLB. He was an All Pro and HOF, and played offense, defense and special teams. And he had the wisdom to create a 'brand' for the cameras that would have value for off the field and when his playing days were over. The man is unique. He describes himself as an introvert when the cameras are off. He cares about his kids, and those connections are real, and that's why he's in the business. But he is aware of his ability to positively influence not just JSU, but the HBCUs writ large. Which would be one hell of a legacy, above and beyond his already incomparable legacy.

He went to Florida State.

He does now coach at an HBCU, though.

I look at the great player/bad coach thing the other way around -- it's not that great players have something that prevents them from being good coaches, but rather that many of them are given the benefit of the doubt to become coaches based on having been a great player and without regard to whether or not they're actually suited for the job in terms of skills and experience. (Remember when Clyde Drexler coached at Houston? That was cool.)

With Sanders you at least have the benefit of some sort of track record to look at and you can evaluate him outside of his status as an NFL Hall of Fame player. I don't know if he can make the jump, but he's not exactly bereft of accomplishment at this point.

meh

he’s coached Pop Warner , prep school & 2.5 years at a FCS school . nothing higher even as an assistant

JSU isn’t bean bag , but it’s hardly big time . coaching at a P5 is a whole nother deal

I’m just glad it’s not us , when we were looking , being pushed into taking him because he’s the flavor of the day . We were in no position to take that risk . Maybe GT ( or Auburn ?) is .

All just heresay so far but if Deion would jump to the SEC that is the biggest jump you can make in college football outside a few power schools.

Both his sons play at JSU currently....Sophomore QB Shedeur Sanders and RS Sophomore S Shilo Sanders

Be interested to see if he would stay at JSU a few more years until they graduate and than move on or take off after this season. Not sure if his alma mater would be his dream coaching job but could work out where he could stay at JSU for few more years and land at FSU if/when Norvell fizzles out and his kids graduate in a few years. FSU has the meat of the schedule coming the next few weeks with Wake Forest, @NC State and Clemson in 3 straight weeks.

I know nothing about his kids, but they certainly could move with him wherever he goes unless they can’t play at that level.

Both his sons can play....not just going on name. Shedeur 4 star QB and Shilo 3 star S. Shilo actually transferred from South Carolina to play for his dad.
Shadeur is legit:

And Shilo has 4 INTs and one forced fumble this season already.

I know the competition isn't P5 level, but let's nit kid ourselves, we'd be salivating over someone if they put up these numbers against high school competition.

former Illini QB Jeff Hecklinski (Palatine HS) who ended up transferring to WIU fired by Brady Hoke from his OC duties at San Diego St last night

I seem to recall him recruiting and coaching against us while at UMich for Hoke 10-12 years ago
