Maybe not the right thread for this question but which B1G coach would you trade for Bret? In my mind I would not trade Bret for any of them. For example, I’m not impressed with Day or Franklin. Harbaugh is Harbaugh - no way. PJ, Ferentz or Rhule? Not a chance. Schiano, Locksley? No not at all. People need to remember this. Go Bert!

Sorry I would trade him for DeBoer in a heartbeat....

I like what Ferentz has built, but their style of play is unwatchable. It's impressive what Braun did this year, but it's too early to say long-term. The rest? eh. I'd stick with Bret.

We will see what happens when he doesn’t have Penix back there
definitely will be difficult to reproduce without a Penix

1. Already seen what DeBoer done with Haener at Fresno State. The next guy there will be fine.
2. Also remember what Washington was like under Jimmy Lake, arguable one of the worst P5 coaches I ever seen. His former OC, John Donovan, was the spread offense version of Brian Ferentz but maybe somehow worse.

Clarification: on Zuppke's challenge, DeBoer is only coach that I would trade Bielema for. Heck among current B1G coaches, there are few of them I would trade for Mike McCarthy, who I think is trash, and I truly would not trade Day for McCarthy and don't like AJ Harbaugh either.

Harbaugh - Probably
Day - maybe, but I'm not interested
Franklin - I guess
Fickle - maybe, but I think I'm good
Smith - probably a good choice but Bert is fine in comparison
Ferentz - No
Ruhle - No
Fleck - NO
Walters - No
Cignetti? - No
Braun - No?
Schiano - No
Locksley - No

DeBoer - Probably
Lanning - Probably
Riley - Probably
Kelly - No

All that to say, yes, there are better coaches out there in college football. But I am perfectly happy with Bret and having a coach who is above all else committed to building a competitive football program in Champaign. Among the people who would take the Illinois job, I wouldn't rather have anyone else.

I'll join in

DeBoer- yes
Lanning- 0-3 against the Huskies is real discouraging
Riley- the Illini would be more exciting, but being reverse Iowa is iffy plus Benedict Brisket isn't known for his loyalty
Kelly- no, but I do believe his offense will give B1G teams fits
Harbaugh- WE NEED NO STINKIN ANN ARBOR ASTROS
Day- No, heck I rate Hartline, Larry Johnson Sr, and maybe Jim Knowles as better HC candidates on that staff!
Franklin- Nah
Fickle- might be overrated but he isn't bad, would leave for Ohio State if they offered
Ruhle- I don't hate as much as others do, but no. Did think his hiring of TX HS coaches to be on his staff at Baylor was brillliant.
Ferentz- nah
Fleck- um no
Walters- no for now, call me back in a year
Cignetti- not yet, but I like the cut of his jib
Braun- not going to lie that NDSU coaching tree is impressive, no but I may regret later
Schiano- he is so Rutgers, him anywhere would worse
Locksley- no

Then again, I would not trade half of these clowns for Mike McCarthy who the Cowboys should have fired last year, especially for Day, Franklin, and AJ Hinchbaugh.

Riley has also ruined a tuna steak, which is my absolute favorite dish.

I would take Ferentz if he was younger. Not sure how much longer he would coach
I would take Harbaugh even though I can’t stand him. Look at Standford 49ers and scUM
I would take Ruhle based on his previous rebuilds
Day I am not sure because he has great success but his talent level has been great. Give him average talent how well would he do

Pass on Rhule. He has a horrendous record vs top 25. At best its probably about what we have now...

Tulane’s Fitz to Houston.

Little surprised. I thought that if he were to leave Tulane, it would be for a bigger program than that.
He doesn’t have a whole lot of years left to coach and make serious money . he’s 62

he already knows a lot of prep coaches in that area and maybe was told his age was a factor with some SEC openings the past 1-2 years

Will probably work out well for Tulane. With SMU leaving the conference, Tulane gets to rule the AAC roost for the foreseeable future and has to be near the top of the list for the Big 12 or ACC the next time realignment comes around. They should be able to get a hot young coach who can keep things rolling for them.

New Indiana coach making an entrance. Most reactions to it I’ve seen on Twitter are negative. I personally think it is great. Seems to fit his personality and he’s just having fun pumping up the crowd. It’s college for darn sakes. Far better than trying to adopt an Indiana accent like a coach leaving the state did in reverse upon arriving in South.

"I've never taken a back seat to anybody and don't plan on starting now!" - Curt Cignetti shouts from the literal back seat of the B1G.

And not so sure about "Thunderstruck" as the IU football new coach intro.

I think "Fool in the Rain" would be more apropos.

Fun/disgusting little tidbit about MSU’s new HC. Oregon State fired its DL coach because he was reportedly “left behind” by Smith to recruit OSU players into the portal to transfer to MSU. Read he was escorted out of facilities without being allowed to gather things. Is this something that is done often? Pretty sleazy. Will enjoy rooting against Smith and MSU going forward.

Manny Diaz being reported as next Duke coach. Not a fan of that hire for Duke (good news for Illinois).
