Chuck Nuggets

Dip your nuggets in my staff source sauce.
People chuckle at Ryan Walters small group of coaches he has to pick through. How in the world is McDonald, or any coach, going to expand their coaching tree sticking around at one place? I'm sure it's worked but it's not the norm. McDonald needed to move on for his own exposure - both what he's exposed to and who he can impress outside of Illinois. The little Underwood needs to do the same at some point. The sooner the better.

(1) ughhhhhhhhhhhhh

(2) Ole Miss could be a playoff team this year. Makes a lot of sense for McDonald and his head coaching prospects. Was hoping that Illinois' offense could have taken a step forward this year, Lunney got a G5 head coaching job, and McDonald would have became the OC.

I’ll defer to you as an insider, but I’m not convinced a 10-year ceiling at Ole Miss is higher than at Illinois. Ole Miss is unquestionably in a better position as a program right now.

(I also didn’t know about the difference in titles, so my bad there … was purely discussing Illinois vs. Ole Miss as destinations.)
I love your optimism, but we just went 5-7 in one of the worst B1G West divisions ever. Over half the teams had first year head coaches, and we had a cheat code All American DL, and we still went 5-7.

Our arrow is pointed up under BB compared to the past few decades. It's WONDERFUL to have some hope again, but we have a long, long way to go.

(1) Totally agree with this take. Eight of their last 11 seasons have resulted in 7 wins or more. They have things rolling.

(2) Big picture, we're also telling on ourselves that Ole Miss is the 9th or 10th best SEC football brand and it seems comical that Illinois' long-term potential is even close to them.

I don’t think Geo was ever in line to become OC if Lunney left

If true, it's an indictment on McDonald as a coach. He looked like Bielema's best hire on paper in early 2021. He was successfully recruiting and this is the best WR stretch at Illinois in 15+ years. If the answer behind the scenes is "he's not OC material", that's saying something.

It’s a lot warmer than you think … They do not accept 7-6 over there …

His last 3 seasons: 7-6 … 4-8 … 7-6 …
None of us know if they accept 7-6 over there because they've never had that luxury. Campbell is their first coach with an overall winning record since the 70s. The only coaches in Iowa State history with a higher winning percentage than Campbell coached in the early 1900s.

If I was making the hire ...

How are you going to convince Scheelhaase to give up the Iowa State OC job to become Illinois' WR coach (+ auxiliary title)? If I'm Scheelhaase's agent, I'm telling him that another good offensive year at Iowa State and he'll start getting head coaching offers (or a really good SEC/B1G OC offer).

His agent is not telling him that …

I think that was my point, though … obviously we are in a worse spot. But if you put Nick Saban in either job, do you think he has a higher ceiling at Illinois or Ole Miss?

Because I’ll take Illinois. And I think that’s how you should judge a job.

As much as I would love it to be Illinois….it would still be Ole Miss with the higher ceiling

No need for mocking, I’d love to hear your opinion, and I’d respect it. But there’s more instate talent here, and they split it with MSST. They have a meh history, and so do we. They play on possibly the hardest division in football, and we play in … TBD but NOT harder than the SEC West. Whatever NIL money is there for a consistently top 15 Ole Miss program is easily matched by a top 15 Illini program… We have more alumni, richer alumni and significantly more non-alumni instate fans like me.

The only argument, IMO, that Ole Miss is a clearly better job is recent record … and I’m sorry, but that’s the logic that says Baylor is a better job than UCLA. Again, I’ll defer to actual insider information … but comparing Illinois today to Ole Miss today isn’t a argument by itself … Alabama basketball is NOT a better job than UCLA. And the pieces are there at Illinois at least as much as at Ole Miss, if you ask me.
