to me , the only valid reason for firing Buh is
a. it was a personal or professional difference of opinion that was not fixable
b. Bret has someone home run hire lined up that could not be announced yet

it’s a tough action to understand , at this point .
im no insider, but maybe he thought he should have been named DC last year?

You’re right … 1 position coach is not make or break …

But when you fire Buh … Have McDonald leave … Have 2 more assistants that are actively looking and interviewing at other programs … And another assistant who is telling people he is open to the right move …

It’s cause for concern … And losing them all (which I’m not saying is happening, but it’s on the table depending how the chips fall) …

Could define the tenure … IMO … 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ouch

Yes and no. Bret hasn’t had his best week ever as HC here with some stuff behind the scenes

I think BB talked with Buh and he decided to enter the “coaches portal” so there’s a chance he could return just like some athletes return to their original school. Not!!!

Per Jeff Johnson, “Buh’s firing reportedly didn’t sit well with many within Illini football program.”

Consistent with what others have shared.
I don't blame them, didn't see anything that warranted a firing unless there's something else going on behind the scenes.

I'm resigned to the fact that we may not have the momentum to adequately replace all the staff losses this time around. Hope I'm wrong

My only thoughts
Changing up the defense, so Buh was let go. Maybe get different minds to craft a new def?
Derek Leonard on offensive staff? Or would he have to come one as analyst first in this day and age?

I'm wondering if this isn't like the Landry situation under Tepper.

Always tough when everyone on your staff has their eyes on other spots. You don't want to get caught with the short straw.

Why are so many willing to jump ship? What are we missing?

Why are so many willing to jump ship? What are we missing?
That we are likely to be a perennial bottom 5 B1G team in the new world order. Didn't quite capitalize on the buzz and excitement of a surprise year with a top 5 NFL draft choice by being inconsistent. Also don't really have anything innovative or exciting about our coaching staff or culture. Until we start to really turn the ship around and really develop an identity and culture. We'll be an okay stop for a year or two to gain experience, but you want to get out before you become associated with lack of success.

Now if we keep having strong defenses and don't back slide into giving up bunches of points, and start to pull of consistent wins against our peers and throw an upset every few years at an Oregon, USC, OSU, Michigan then we might have people who aren't actively trying to leave every year.

To put it simply …

I think the expectation has been set at 6-6 … And if we can do that year in and year out … With the occasional year that’s a little better … I think everyone (Josh, Fans, etc.) … Would be very pleased …

But going forward … If I’m a coach … 6-6 seems pretty tough to get year in and year out with the schedule going forward …

So - when someone comes calling from a better program … With more money … You listen …

Couldn’t have said it better myself …
