Then you wouldn’t mind handing the reins over to Tyler Underwood next year as he orchestrated arguably the best offense in college basketball history.Mike Boynton orchestrated arguably the best defense in college basketball history

??? I've NEVER made a negative comment regarding Tyler running our offense. If 19 is the start with 5 in 5 then those guys could still play to their 24.I think they're trying to cap the amount of European pros that are seen
But also, I doubt the 19 age limit stands
He had a 7'3 long armed rim protector that was touted as a lottery pick before coming to the US and two physical 6'9 guys that had the ability to guard 1-5(it's incredibly rare in college to have one 6'9 guy that can do that).Mike Boynton orchestrated arguably the best defense in college basketball history

didn't Tennessee have a be really low defensive rating within last 5 years. like a 79.5 or something? I could be imagining thisObligatory "not to dog pile", because it's easy to argue against Michigan having the best defense in history last year;
But I was curious about actual stats for where Michigan, the number #1 defense last year, was ranked next to other #1 defenses, so I took the last 10 years as a sample set, and used Kenpom's Drtg. It turns out that Michigan was the lowest-rated #1 defense of the last 10 years:

It seems like the only thing truly remarkable about their defense is that they were the first team since 2013 to be the team with the #1 defense that won the Championship. Otherwise, they were just a physically imposing team, which is why they also had a highly rated offense.
The annual trend though, is that offenses are getting better while defenses are getting worse.Obligatory "not to dog pile", because it's easy to argue against Michigan having the best defense in history last year;

If he became the coach and we retained all of our players? Yes I'd feel equally as confident about our season.He was talking about if Tyler was the head coach next year (not just "offensive coordinator" from the sidelines).

Torvik ranks them #3 in defense for the NCAAT (min 3 games, i.e. the S16 teams), and only 0.4 pts/100 back from #1.Was surprised to look at the metrics --I recall the Baylor team that won the natty having exceptional defense in the tournament, shutting down teams any time they needed to. But on Kenpom, they aren't even in the top 20. Their closest game and only win less than double digits was in the regional final. Probably my memory, but sometimes I feel like metrics don't really tell the story.
They had a massive run of COVID in their conference season and got it together again in March. Half their February was cancelled.Torvik ranks them #3 in defense for the NCAAT (min 3 games, i.e. the S16 teams), and only 0.4 pts/100 back from #1.
They only had one NCAAT game with AdjD worse than 90 (95.3) and three below 82. But of their last 9 games before the NCAAT, their best was 93.7, and they had six games worse than 100.
So they were a different team defensively in the NCAAT (or they experienced some extremes with luck).
Duke's talent level this year is absolutely insane:
Oh that's right. They were #7 in defense before that with AdjD of 88.8. Between that and the NCAAT, they were #186 with AdjD of 103.3. Then in the NCAAT their AdjD was 85.1They had a massive run of COVID in their conference season and got it together again in March. Half their February was cancelled.
