Brother, if you knew me you would know that this could not be more true.

But my whole spiel on this really kinda comes down to two core points

1. College football's deep roots of fan passion grew out of a specific and unique (and, frankly, weird) ecosystem of conferences and rivalries and regions and the rhythm of the season that was unlike anything else. It is not just individually wrapped modular relationships between one fan and one team that can be rearranged like legos.

2. The American Big Four pro sports model, constructed around a long regular season to gain entry into an expansive playoff for the single national championship that is understood to be the only thing that matters and the only result every team should be seeking, just actually kinda sucks, and those leagues are revenue monsters of the global sports industry DESPITE the competition format, not BECAUSE of it.

A 24/32 team playoff has downsides, sure. Bowls become even more meaningless than they already are and maybe even obsolete.

That sucks.

But, there’s upsides too.

1. Illinois. Yes, that Illinois. Would have made the playoffs two years ago. The level of joy I would personally have by watching Illinois football play in the playoffs, even if we got smoke by 20, would dwarf every bowl game since the Rose Bowl.

2. And it’s not just Illinois. 40-50 teams each year will have a realistic shot of making the playoffs. That adds significance and meaning to an extra hundred regular season games.

3. Is Texas vs Ohio St as valuable? Not quite. Because it doesn’t impact whether or not they’ll make the playoffs. But, at least they’ll continue to play the game! As it stands now, the incentive to play big games like that has been eroded because there’s too much risk in a loss.

4. It’ll add parity to college football. The more teams that have a realistic shot of making the playoffs, the more teams that are able to recruit based on that. You don’t have to go to Ohio State to play in the playoffs, kids.

Again, there are downsides. It’s not perfect. But I think there are enough upsides to justify it.
Love the DA attachment (it is brilliant and reminds me of the old George Carlin bit - anyone driving slower than you is an idiot and anyone driving faster is a maniac), but could not disagree more with your #1.

The happiness from the last two bowl wins, plus the good feeling carryover well into the offseason, was huge. Would it have been the same with minor bowl wins if we were a 6-6 or 7-5 team? No, but we are speaking of actuals here and then neither would we be sniffing a playoff with those records.

The idea that some three-touchdown loss to finish the season, just so we could say we were the 20th-best (or wherever) team in a 24-team playoff, would make people feel better, is just crazy to me.

The NIL Arms Race continues

Plus:
1. A mere few years ago if not less, this was one of the cheapskate schools...
2. In the video itself, they mention that Arizona St mentions that they are keeping up with the Joneses with the Texas schools including Tech. Despite the P2 smugness that has been on this board in the past, the nuclear club has quite a few "non-P2" members.

Kiffin is such a hard guy to appreciate at any level - personal or professional.

Ole Miss fandom has every right to be super upset with him - then again, it’s no surprise and they knew he was that way when they hired him from FAU. Always looking for the BBD . always looking for excuses

agree - 100% weak sauce.

Also, "our bottom is harder than theirs." C'mon, this is a family friendly website.
20+ years of saying their top is better, now that they (relatively) stink, it's that their bottom is better. Pathetic bunch of losers.

Time to-repost my all-time favorite from the Super:

I don't think that his point is THAT far off. It's an 18 team league that has a clear line in talent gaps.

OSU
MI
OR
IN (recently)
OSU
USC

They can match up with anyone from a talent perspective. I put USC in their because they do have a ridiculous amount of talent. Their coach is just a butcher.

WI
IA
IL
NB
MN
WA
MSU
UCLA
MN
NW
Rutgers
MD

There are very, very few teams here that would be favored in a regular season game vs an SEC team.....in a game that means something. The bowls come around and guys either aren't playing or transferred, so that's a tough way to comp.

Which SEC team would we be favored against in October? Vanderbilt? Kentucky? MAYBE Missouri?

Objectively speaking, he's not speaking unreasonably. He's an a$$h***, but his point is valid.

If a certain Mr Anderson does end up transferring to Illinois within the next couple of seasons, there is either a major us problem or a major him problem…

The SEC remains undefeated in the hypothetical world of hypothetical football. Never lost a game out of league to anyone ever.

And all this talk about matchups and such. Heck when bowl season comes around the sec team is the defacto home team 80% of the time outside the playoff games. Just us have played LSU in New Orleans, Miss St in Florida, SC in Florida and Tenn in Nashville.

Also take a look at who the sec typically plays on the next to last week of the season. Bama plays citadel. It’s an annual throw away weekend for most of that league.

It’s real simple. Once nil made it legal to pay players the sec advantage from paying under the table went away.

Just looking from a very high level on these financials shared and assuming I'm understanding this correctly, B1G revenue is $360 M greater than SEC's, but the per team distributions is only $6 M higher per team? For clean numbers assume we split 360/18 - that's $20M. I know there are costs that have to come out of all of this but is the SEC running that much more efficiently/lean than B1G?

Looking further, a good amount is due to B1G having 2 more schools, but still...

B1G 18 teams = total distributions of $1.368 B (team distribution x18)
SEC 16 teams = total distributions of $1.125 B (team distribution x16)

Or maybe the SEC is robbing from Peter to pay 'Bama - er Paul?

I'd be interested in anyone who actually understands this more explaining what's going on here.
