Behind a paywall, but all I wanted to point out was that of the three athletic directors interviewed in this article on the state of the B1G-SEC relationship, Josh Whitman was very prominently featured only after Gene Smith. Yet another example of Josh being a true leader at the top of the conference, which is so huge for us as we move forward in college athletics. We are extremely lucky to have him. IN JOSH WE TRUST!

While this guy's comment is sort of true, I am getting a bit of a Dunning Kruger Effect vibe with some people talking about realignment. It's like they JUST figured out that the facts Oklahoma State has won a lot of football games in the last decade or that Duke is good at basketball don't move the needle, and now they think they have this secret knowledge that they need to share with the masses ... except they simplify the hell out of it.

"Major brand" is entirely subjective. Realignment is about money, and there are multiple factors that play into how much money a school brings - with the most important (I believe) being the TV audience that school can bring to these channels. With literally billions of dollars on the line, I guarantee you these executives are looking at a lot of data, ranging from what each school has pulled for viewers in every single TV/time slot (PSU doesn't get good ratings on BTN and Illinois DOES get good ratings on FOX, for example), controlling these numbers for certain opponents (Indiana gets good ratings vs. Michigan but terrible ratings vs. Northwestern) and that team's record (Rutgers fans don't watch when they're usually bad, but they broke the NYC ratings record when they were good ... can a great coach deliver ratings gold at Rutgers?), trying to model how appealing a given program is to non-fans/casual viewers (do random Big XII fans tune in to watch Alabama more often than they do to watch Penn State?), how many "potential fans" a school has in a certain market if they were to improve (why couldn't Syracuse command the same following in NYC that they do in basketball if a dynamite young coach started winning there?), etc. My point is that while I might agree that Stanford Football "is not a major brand," who exactly would this guy classify as the "major brands," and how does he do that? Is Michigan State a major brand? Iowa? Illinois? Auburn? UCLA? Does getting the Big Ten/SEC invite or being in one of those conferences already provide an inherent boost to a school's brand??

I guess more than anything I am annoyed that this guy acted like he knew something others didn't, when most of us do not have access to the decision making processes that these TV executives are employing. All we can say is that it vaguely relates to TV viewers, which relates to money, but none of us can accurately predict who is more valuable between, say, Oregon and Washington. Both bring different things to the table, if you ask me.

The SEC is becoming the Red Sox vs. Yankees of college football.

TV is determined to shove SEC down our throats and make us love every minute of it.
I watch two conferences. The B1G and the SEC. Don't care a thing about the others. Have attended a few Georgia games. SEC crowds elevate the viewing experience whether in person or on TV.

"Plenty of other people have felt this is the way the sport is moving, and also that dragging all the other sports along makes little sense. If football is branching off, it doesn’t make sense to rip apart the regional conferences to which the schools have been tied for all the other sports."

Agreed!

Lazy day Saturday and I like thinking about these things even though it’s not going to happen.

Used the yahoo article to divide teams evenly while considering geography
Top 3: Ohio State, Michigan, USC
Next 3 : Penn St, Wisconsin, Oregon
Next 3 : Iowa, Michigan State, Washington
Next 3 : Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska
Next 3 : Maryland, Purdue, UCLA
Next 3 : Rutgers, Indiana, NW

Established 2 protected rivals for each team using trophy games
Last, matched up the remaining with protected rivals that made the most sense.
Rival trophy games in bold

Central Division - Ranking Total = 57
1-Ohio St / Michigan, UCLA
4-Penn St / Michigan State, USC
9-Iowa / Minnesota, Wisconsin
12-Illinois / NW, Purdue
14-Maryland / Oregon, Indiana
17-Rutgers / USC, Washington

Northern Division - Ranking Total = 58
2-Michigan / Ohio St, NW
6-Wisconsin / Iowa, Nebraska
8-Michigan St / Penn St, Oregon
11-Minnesota / Iowa, Nebraska
15-Purdue / Illinois, Washington
16-Indiana / UCLA, Maryland

Western Division - Ranking Total = 56
3-USC / Penn St, Rutgers
5-Oregon / Michigan St, Maryland
7-Washington / Purdue, Rutgers
10-Nebraska / Minnesota, Wisconsin
13-UCLA / Ohio St, Indiana
18-Northwestern / Illinois, Michigan

Missing Rivalry Games
Iowa / Nebraska - 53 times
Minnesota / Penn St - 15 times

Next goal was to play home and away at every school within 4 years
17 teams to play
5 are in division and 2 rivals
10 teams remaining

12 game B1G schedule

Year 1 (6 home / 6 away)
Play 5 division games (3 home / 2 away)
Play 2 protected rivals (1 home / 1 away)
Play 5 opponents (2 home / 3 away)

Year 2 (6 home / 6 away)
Play 5 division games (2 home / 3 away)
Play 2 protected rivals (1 home / 1 away)
Play 5 same opponents (3 home / 2 away)

Years 3 and 4 follow years 1 and 2 with the other 5 opponents

Establish winner of each division using only division games

Championship game
  1. Head to Head record between 3 division winners
  2. Record against 2nd place teams in 3 divisions
  3. Etc. I’m sure it could be figured out somehow

Not if your a fan of the visiting team.
Especially when SEC teams play teams from up north. Have a friend that is a Purdue grad. Told me when he and a group of Purdue fans attended the Outback Bowl against Georgia (2004?), they were continuously abused by Georgia fans. Having lived in Georgia for awhile now, I can believe it. Southern football is deeply ingrained in the southern psyche as a reflection of personal, local and regional perseverance and pride.

Interesting that since Purdue is from the North, their fans were "continuously" abused by their Peach State counterparts. I guess if Georgia's opponent were Arizona State, the abuse would have merely been intermittent? Lol abuse!

You have to have USC-UCLA and Oregon-UW as protected games. Those are bigger rivalries than ones vs. the historical big schools, which don’t even really exist.

I kinda feel like they have to have a round robin of pacific protected games to help alleviate the travel burden, right?

Sure they will still play tOSU and UM and have marquee matchups amongst the new powers and traditional powers…but make sure all four of those teams see their three west coast brothers each year.

I put them in the same division so they would play every year. I was placing as many teams that had rivalry trophies in the same division and when not possible I had to account for them in the additional protected rivalries outside of their division. Purdue-Indiana, Michigan-Michigan State, Ohio St-Illinois etc etc are all accounted for by being in the same division.

Interesting thing when looking them up, how many knew there’s a Michigan - NW “George Jewett Trophy” rivalry game?

Probably not NW because they’ve never seen the trophy.
