I don't think they expected him to keep it up. The last time he played in the majors he hit a combined .181.

Mastro hit .300 in AAA last year. They probably thought he was ready.

Tauchman played in Japan last year and had a nearly identical stat line to the one he is carrying this year. They probably figured on significant regression in MLB.

OF was pretty much settled going into the season. If there didn't suddenly become a need for Cody to play 1st, (the stink of Mancini and Hosmer, & Mervis not being ready) Mike may have never gotten this opportunity.

He's got "the look" right now. Super confident in the box.
It didn't work out with Mastrobuoni, but I think the big difference between this year's Cubs versus last year's is that Mastrobuoni only got 113 PA's. 100 for Hosmer, 99 for Mervis, this team had other options and was decisive about not letting guys just linger as weak links in the lineup.

287 PA's for Alfonso Rivas last year. 292 for Frank Schwindel. 228 for a horribly slumping Madrigal. 171 for Zach McKinstry. 166 for Jonathan Villar. And the cherry on top, 151 for Heyward.

This team is trying to be good in a way last year's wasn't. Trying works!

Hopefully... LOL

Atlanta is the best team in baseball. I'm not sure it's close. Hopefully we can hang on to some of this momentum.
Fried (first start back since 5/5) vs. Hendricks
Elder vs. TBD
Morton vs. Steele

2/3 would be incredible.

I don't know if they make the playoffs or not but I will say for the first time in 3 or 4 years I see a team that can compete. Shortstop and 2nd base covered and strong for the foreseeable future and if they can keep Bellinger, look out. Open up the checkbook this offseason and get some starting pitching help, a third baseman and some stud bullpen arms. Oh, and Shohie Ohtani................

They just said on the pregame that 70-80 pitches is expected for Fried.

In our position we had better not forget about anything. Sure, the division would be a better route to the WS, but beggars can't be choosers.
The perspective on winning the division might be that it's the "easier" way to get into the playoffs, rather than for it being the preferred route to a desired World Series.

At the top of the NL Wild Card, where the Cubs are 2.0 games back going into today, are the Giants and Phillies, with the Cubs only playing 3 games against the Giants rest of schedule.

In the NL Central, however, the Cubs are 2.5 games back, with 4 games against the 2nd place Reds, and 6 against the 1st place Brewers (including 3 to end the regular season). More autonomy in the schedule to control their own destiny.

All that said, any way they can get in, I'm happy as a fan!
