He is 6'9".....Unless Illini want to play small ball, he's your prototypical PF.

Yea not at all.... How many teams have a post presence like that at the 4. Purdue may be the only team I can think of. Almost all 4s now have range pushing out towards the 3 pt line. Don't get hung up on the 6'9" measurement; ET is as much of a true 5 as you will see. Think Sean May who as you might remember did pretty well as a 5 (as a 6'9" player). ET is a big bodied 5. The fact that he isn't 2-3" taller affects him at the next level not in college.

Why would ET come here ?? You all might want to go back and reread all the comments written about him after he committed to Tam . We have such short memories now a days.
He isn't leaving the state of Texas. Ill root for the players who want to be here .

He (Thorne) confirmed on twitter that he was granted a medical hardship waiver his freshman year. You can't believe everything you read on twitter but there's no reason for him to lie about it.

Combine that with the facts that playing in a regular season game as a freshman disqualified him form taking a voluntary redshirt, and at least one UNC-Charlotte team web page said he took a medical redshirt, and there is not a lot more to know.

Will he qualify for a sixth year waiver? I have no idea.

Has he done anything to disqualify him from a sixth year waiver, like take a voluntary redshirt? Absolutely not.

The only thing I can think of is that he used the grad transfer waiver to be immediately eligible at Illinois. Not sure how that might factor in and it's quite possible no one knows since there's a good chance no one's been in this situation previously. :)

And he has two years of eligibility. That is what I said he would have when he transferred. He played two years at Duke even though the second one was only during first semester. Some were saying that he would get 2 1/2 years to play starting about now. Since there is no such thing as 1/2 years of eligibility, that was not possible. He had two choices: 1. Play this year starting second semester, then have one more full year after that, or 2. sit out a full year this year and have full two years left starting next season. He chose the second option.

Either way, he gets four years of playing like everyone else (barring injury redshirt like Abrams), even if one of those years was a partial one.

Feel horrible about what's happened to big Mike, terrible break, but I think we have to take Ellijah if he wants to come here and tell Mike sorry things didn't work out. For the good of the program, 3 years of Ellijah >>> 1 year of MT. Tough decision but I think it's the right one if we have the opportunity. Groce has had enough bad luck, maybe this one swings his way.

So we'd kick out Big Bo for the upcoming spring semester so we can make room for ET? He's a midseason transfer ya know..

Where would we find room for him to be a starter considering how strong Finke has been offensively?

It'd be cool if he was 2 inches taller and then he could play the 5. But otherwise, I don't know how you find time for him with Finke/Black.

We need a 5 and a PG. But, with his talent level, I'd welcome him anytime.

This is college basketball, not the NBA. 6'9 is plenty tall to play Center. Sean May wasn't too bad at the 5 in college ball, was he?

That said, I doubt he comes here.

That is not going to happen. They will not pull a kid's scholarship half way through the season when he has been nothing but great on and off the court.

Absolutey wrong. If your million dollar job was on the line what would you do..especially when Thornes playing days could be over anyway.

Not be worse than Crean.. I haven't heard of a coach ever doing that. It's not going to happen and it's foolish to suggest that it's a possibility.

Not only that, but given all the bad publicity that Illinois has received with the football program firing the coach for player abuse, the soccer and women's hoops programs facing lawsuits, there's simply no way something like this would stand even a remote chance of happening.

I stand corrected.

I was under the impression that Thorne's redshirt was of the voluntary kind. If it was indeed a medical redshirt, then, by the rules, he should be eligible for a sixth year.

If someone could explain to me the policy rationale why that distinction matters I would appreciate it.

You have to miss 2 years not of your own choosing. So if he chose to sit out a year then that year doesnt count. Abrams lost 2 years due to injury, Thorne in this case would lose both for medical reasons also thereby allowing him to be considered for a 6th year.

Thanks.

But that seems unnecessary. Let somebody play 4 full seasons. Redshirting as a freshman shouldn't mean you lose options later on down the line based on circumstances you couldn't have anticipated.
