Why argue anymore? We made the statement. What's done is done.

That is quite the stretch.

I've been very clear that there is an obvious, direct link between our current HC and the HC at one of the named defendants schools. That's all I've said.
To not make a statement when there is this obvious direct link would have easily been construed by the media as we are trying to avoid, or hide something.

Tell me where I am wrong here. Louisville made a statement yesterday regarding the investigation. Illinois made a statement regarding the investigation. You think the statement was the correct move.

Will Louisville have its championship stripped? Have to say- I don't feel an ounce sorry for Snider.

I do. Well maybe I do. If he legitimately committed to Louisville, then it sucks he and all the other players that played fair are going to be punished. I feel for all the kids affected by this that are innocent. Of course, sucks that he flipped so late, but kids are kids.

Of course, if it comes out later Louisville gave him some cash to flip over, then I will not feel sorry whatsoever. I prefer the innocent before proven guilty stand though.

Our current head coach was the HC at the school that employed one of the NAMED defendants at the time some of the alleged crimes took place. That is a DIRECT link. Any attempt to avoid this obvious link is just silly conjecture.

+1

This isn't six degrees of Kevin Bacon. BU (and thus UI) is only six months removed from a direct working relationship with a named defendant. BU's name can be found in stories published by national news outlets. It's not just people on this board that are making the connection.

Like has been said already, the worst possible thing you can do when the Tribune, or ESPN, or the blowhards from the Score call asking for a quote, is to say "No comment".

Be swift. Be transparent(ish). Silence leads to speculation.

You stretched it to me believing that we are just as culpable as UL. I've not said anything other than we have a good enough reason to make a statement.

Last try at this.

I was pointing out that by your given example, one could infer that by suggesting a similar track as Louisville, you felt we were also culpable. That was the ENTIRE point I was trying to make. Not that you believed we were as guilty as Louisville, but that the inference could so easily be made by using Louisville as your example.

That is, again, the whole point regarding making a statement. Look at the other schools that came out yesterday. Which ones were the most covered/re-posted/re-tweeted? The schools of the arrested assistants and Louisville. By also releasing a statement we acted in concordance with the obviously guilty schools. That is bad optics.

C'mon... Louisville and Pitino were implicated in the prosecution documents. Illinois was not. There was no need for a statement, it showed that we felt the need to defend ourselves as if we were somehow involved. No need to issue a statement, period, as schools not involved/implicated also did not issue a statement.

There are hundreds of schools that are monitoring the situation, I did not see them feeling the need to be honest and issue a public statement.

Not yet. Schools with clear ties are being hounded by press & will need to say something very soon. This is staying a step ahead of the media.

Too bad everyone couldn't just take a moment and enjoy the fact that Bruce Pearl may be going down in flames. AGAIN.

Pitino fired

I actually have nothing against Pitino. I don't root for him but basketball has been better with him in it over the last 30 years. The Lattener shot in the tourney was probably the greatest game ever played, the Celtics flameout ("Larry Bird isn't walking through that door"), the all white suite, the extramarital affair and ensuing abortion with an assistant's wife, the battles with Calipri, the prostitution ring with recruits... Man, just writing this makes me already miss him.

I'm having more fun imagining Pitino being unemployed--and hopefully unpaid. I'll enjoy any Pearl schadenfreude when the time comes.

You are trying to build a strawman that people deny or do not know that BU knows Lamant Evans, and knows him very well. That is not the case. The issue is about the press release, and the need to emphasize that link.

The only schools that issued press releases or official statements were the ones where the defendants and people prosecuted had served as coaches, assistants, players, employees, administrators, etc. ... AND Illinois, which apparently "monitors" the situation (whatever that means, especially to recruits and future recruits).

What does "monitor" even mean? That if somehow BU is implicated we may take appropriate action? We will do that anyway, we need an official statement a priori? It is just an invitation for negative recruiting.

Would say there are some other possible recruits in play...Maybe a Malik Williams say?

Between now and say April, the recruiting scene may change drastically.

No, it is choosing from among multiple optics. Remaining silent sounds like a cover-up. Shrieking our innocence just begs the media to skewer us. We took the third choice - a statement that manages to appear transparent without really revealing anything. There was no perfect choice, but ours was a good one.

In today's media climate, there's no doubt in my mind that the DIA was fielding a lot of questions on this. Now they can have a single, consistent statement that's way better than a bunch of individual "no comment" responses.
