This team just proves that a roster of experienced mediocre players is still mediocre even tho they have experience.

I hate that we are starting thoughts with "well, the bright side is..."

....... the bright side in this game is that Jaylon Tate just received his pink slip.

+1. It looks like we finally found a competent point guard. Too bad it is in year 5 and probably not enough to save this team.

The next time we play I invite everyone to watch our players off the ball when we're on offense. Thats all i did in the last ten minutes of that game. It's eye opening. Groce has no idea what he's doing.

The season is far from lost but I see no urgency whatsoever. It will be lost soon if they don't pull their heads out.

I honestly don't believe this... nunn and hill proved their value early as freshman and didn't start. I hope you are right though. Playing TJL gallows you to sti TA and start JCL too

I was a Groce believer but I'm a bigger believer in truth. We are poorly coached. We have no offensive or defensive scheme. We struggle to score against high-major opponents and our kids never develop any "dog" in them. They're so scared an confused. It's almost and advantage that Te'Jon is so young and fearless because he has no idea of why he should ever play scared. We have 5 players that belong on a high major team. Malcolm, Tracy, Leron, JCL and Te'jon. That's it. Most of those are complimentary components within those programs as well. That's both a failure in recruitment and failure in player development. This is not sustainable. We need to start putting fillers out to see what coach our recruits would stay committed to. I think it's time to consider keeping Walker and finding a coach that can handle the big stage and not be dependent upon catching lightning in a bottle.

Remember when many here were complaining about Egwu? Unfortunately none of our bigs now, can protect the rim. Maverick Morgan is absolutely terrible defensively.
Not that we have any "stoppers" defensively.

Black and Lucas played great. Hill is who he is: a really nice complementary scorer who's not cut out to be a first option. Those three look like B1G talents, though TJL will obviously have ups and downs this year. Black and Hill would be rotation players just about anywhere. Hill would start, but not star for most top programs. The fact that he's by far our best player is problematic.

Effort was good overall. Coaching was poor, as usual. Talent deficit is clear and will continue to sink us against top teams: we just can't keep up in terms of size, skill and athleticism.

Abrams, Thorne, Morgan, and Finke would be decent backup players at most P5 programs. Good kids, some skill and talent, but they're not starter-caliber B1G players. They'd all be end-of-the-rotation guys at most P5 schools. Finke will be a pretty good role player as an upperclassman. Jaylon Tate is overmatched against P5 teams. Just can't hang. He has to sit going forward.

TJL is going to be a stud. I hope Groce is willing to live with some inevitable freshman mistakes, because Lucas needs to be playing 20+ minutes per game the rest of the year.

My biggest question, and the thing that has me absolutely dumbfounded: what on earth happened to Jalen Coleman-Lands?! He looked like a future star as a freshman. This year, he looks abysmal. Athletically he looks fine, but he's a poor defender, poor ball handler, and his shot selection is terrible. He's hit some threes here and there, but he's missed almost every shot that matters. At least he took it to the cup a few times today and drew fouls. I'm at a loss, though: I expected him to be a borderline all-conference player this year, but now I'm wondering if there's something wrong behind the scenes. He looks like one of the worst players on the floor :tsk:

This is exactly what I've been talking about. Terrible :tsk:

TJL, Black, Thorne and Malcolm (second half) are the only guys who seemed to be playing like they really care. I would start all four alongside JCL, who I'm confident will break out of this mini-slump soon. Abrams, Finke, Morgan, Jordan, Williams to round out the rotation.

We will learn a lot about this team's resolve in the rest of the non-conference. I can cheer for an okay team that plays hard. Right now we are an okay team with no heart, and that is unacceptable.

Coleman is good for one thing out there: shooting. That's it.

He plays terrible defense, cannot take care of the ball, and nothing good has ever came from him driving to the rim. I wish our coaches could develop him into a complete player.

Just got done watching the game on dvr...yeah, it didn't take long. I thought we played hard at times, but we have no real offensive game plan, and no real fire.

I don't get why Lucas is not starting, or at least the first off the bench for Tracy.

Malcolm needs help getting open looks, he shouldn't have to try and create all the time, he's not quick enough.

It's just depressing, it looks like the team has no confidence in either themselves or the coaches.

Time to fill the wheelbarrow with cash. I may no longer be able to say "in JFG we trust," but I hope with the next hire we can say "in JW we trust."

Groce is not an in-game coach. We need an in game coach. The season is not over yet and we have plenty of time to fix things but if Groce doesn't make the tournament, I dont care how many 5* players he brings next year. He better get fired. This team is experienced and talented enough to make the tournament.

I'm 43 and not entirely sure when he played at U of I. So it's been a long freaking time haha

Levi Cobb was a freshmen when I was a freshman in 1976....yes a LONG time ago.

Len Elmore qoute with near the end was SO TRUE and so painful..."illinois just not playing together"

In my long tenure as an Illini fan I've never seen such a lack of teamwork. If Levi Cobb tried some of the 1:1 plays that we done out there today. Lou Henson would have jumped up, waived his hands, grabbed someone off the bench, sat him down and lectured him for 2 mins, thereby embarrassing him in front of all his teammates and fans...JFG would be well served to start doing some that.

Losing is bad enough, not playing together and with hustle...I can't take it!

I'm 61 and Levi dunked on me in a pickup game when I was a freshman. So yeah it's been a long time.

We could have a heck of a 1-2 point guard punch with Lucas and Frazier. If Groce is here next year, it'll be wasted.
