The defense is crap this year. Now everyone thinks Lovie isn't going to adjust.
Don't care how good of a player you are. If you are a POS and will influence the young talent in a negative way, there is the door. The seniors that stayed, Nick Allegretti, DudeK, are the types of players you want as role models for your young players. This roster needs to mature to the point of having an Allegretti in every position group. Did Lovie put himself in this roster position, yes. Are you not going to let him show us the finished product?
Getting dominated sucks and is disheartening. When these kids sacks drop, it will be a different result.

We are?

It's almost like people are being purposefully obtuse when they cite this years recruiting rankings without acknowledging we have the second fewest commits and Lovie historically fills the class late. Maybe it ends up poor, but we are a long ways away at this point.

For those that think recruiting hasn't improved go on 247sports and compare Lovie's last two classes ad go back 10 years. Lovie has added much larger linemen, no question. In the last two years depth is improving.

Lovie inherited a terrible program. Beckman was fired for player abuse and Cubit recruiting was terrible as interim. Also AD was fired. Lovie inherited a program where the best players were leaving. Reason he played freshmen at record levels was that the upper classmen were average MAC level recruit.

I believe Lovie/Whitman will hire a top notch DC. Who will inherit a young talented group with good recruits coming in.

Lovie needs to add veterans when the lower classmen washout (BWilliams, Olidipo, etc.). Also has to do better with Illinois recruiting.

I think next year 6 wins is doable. UCONN worst position than us. Two MAC type teams who lose plenty of upper classmen. Rutgers, Minny, Nebraska, NW, Purdue lose many upper classmen.

Our D line is going to be a strength next year.

This is bog-standard justification for poor performing coaches everywhere.

Problem is that personnel issues are the responsibility of the head coach. He decided early on he wanted his unproven, small, inexperienced freshman to play instead of the inherited players. That's on him. When you decide to play an out of shape freshman at left tackle instead of a guy that has since made an NFL roster, that's on you. When you decide to go completely young on the defense, that's on you. There's upperclassmen, proven starters at SMU, Miami, and Maryland that were deemed not good enough here. That's an upperclassmen at each level of the defense that was forced out of the program.

Whereas this is the truth.

Lovie Smith willfully and intentionally tore down the roster he inherited, playing weaker players over stronger ones and then chasing those stronger players away. That was a disastrous decision. We're digging out of the rubble of that decision both roster-wise but perhaps more importantly culturally. A culture of veteran leadership and the best players getting the snaps is essential to winning in college sports.

The main goal of this strategy was to get the young players he has recruited experience to become that veteran leadership when they matured. Possible a secondary purpose was to not have those same young players be influenced by the current roster, for whatever reason.
At this point it absolutely has looked troublesome. I also do not believe today is going to be much better either. But it still does not change the fact that this roster has mass potential when they mature. That was the goal from the beginning. We need to see it before we kill it.

This is exactly what Moeller did in his short tenure. Played the guys he recruited, passed over better players to develop the young guys. Many of those players left by year two. History repeats itself. I firmly believe that if you are a good coach, you can make/coach the players you inherent better than your predecessor. Allow better players lead/teach the younger guys.

Reading an article from 2016, he cited having 3 boys in school 6th, 7th and 9th grades as a major reason why he chose not to join Lovie's staff. Going into the 2019 school year they will be in the 9th, 10th and 12th grades. I wonder if being offered the D.C. Job for $500k or more would be too much to turn down this time along with the promise of taking over for Smith

Please name the players who left for better programs The only two I can think of is Trav Wilson/Maryland and TJ Neal/Auburn. Both players weren't forced out but used the grad transfer rule to get closer to home. We had talented players get in trouble with bright futures (Bennett, Dorsey, Olidipo, etc), injured (Dudek, Epstein), or not play to ranking (Magginson). But the whole Lovie chased away talented upperclassmen is a myth.

Where did Chyce Croych end up at? Fault him for not going the JUCO route, but that is a short cut. Once again look at the recruits in his last 2.5 years against the prior 8 years. Beckmen and Cubit built a roster of average MAC teams.

The game is about offense. Brohm is an offensive guy. Leach is an offensive guy. Babers is an offensive guy. Chip Kelly, Mark Helfrich, Holgerson, etc. When you hire a defensive coach as HC, the program is at the mercy of a good OC hanging around. Holocek may be able to get his feet wet as a LB coach at the P5 level and move up to DC, but HC in waiting is where the author is way off.

Nick Saban? You cherry picked Offensive Head coaches - confirmation bias. I realize the trend is hire an offensive head coach that calls his own plays but that is a trend not the only way to build a program.

Seems like something nuclear-related is the obvious next step.

I wanted to touch base on my "adaption" post. I hope Lovie decides to do more live tackling in the Spring. I know it is hard when you do not have the depth, but it seems like these young guys need as many reps as possible tackling this level of talent. And there were a lot of injuries anyways.
