Refs often call double techs when chippy things are getting out of hand between players. Not sure how you can defend what Belo did.
Just kind of repeating what’s been said here because I’m late to the party.

Double tech should have been called when the dude bumped belo and he threw the ball back. It wasn’t, so a warning should have been issued, couldn’t see if it was.

When the double tech was issued, it looked like 2 dudes just colliding after a basket while moving in different directions. Unless something was said, I think you have to give a warning there (if you didn’t on the first one), let them know you didn’t call the first one, and stop that crap.

I was pro belo here and am now neutral, but I don’t think that situation was refereed properly at all.

Really sad. It seems many St. Johns fans have had enough already. Wouldn't be surprised to see him transfer again, but who would take him after his struggles across two teams?
There was another video of him chatting with fans and directing the pep band instead of warming up with the team before the second half at Butler.

Makes you wonder what went down at halftime in the NCAA tourney game.

LSU and Miller getting taken to the woodshed. Down by 24 at halftime. Struggling with his shot and definitely not a combo guard.

Surprised he did not transfer after Wade was let go.

And today he was eating popcorn on the bench.

If he transfers he sits a year
Curbelo seemingly took a shot at Mike Anderson by reprinting a stat on his Instagram feed showing how bad St. John's is scoring after timeouts. That likely led to the suspension. A lot of people around SJU think Anderson is gone, but beating Providence at the Garden with Curbelo suspended could help Anderson's case.

Head injuries are nothing to sneeze at.

After the big ten tourney his freshman year andre looked like a future all American

I'm glad Podz is having success.

I always thought he had great offensive skill with alot of different ways to get buckets. He has exceeded even what I thought his ceiling could be...However, I think there are 3 main things that would make things alot different if he stayed.

1. Defense
2. Level of competition
3. Volume of shots

I don't know if he is necessarily a bad defensive player, but the staff went for long, athletic, quick twitch defenders and I'm not sure how well he would have consistently held up.
The level of competition thing has been talked about at nauseum and I think its with good evidence. Lastly, even if he was here...he is not getting anywhere near the green light he has at Santa Clara. Dude is pulling up from 4 feet beyond the 3 point line with 20 seconds left on the shot clock...and making alot of them to his credit.

I do wonder if we lost a good one...but Illinois is going to be just fine.
I just picture Podz trying to score against Sencire and don’t see it. Combo of two would be great.

The one thing that is always hard is that players all simply don't develop into stars. They have personal issues, physical issues, or just received their ceiling. And it is all done in public, which is brutal for a young person. Curbelo was as exciting of a player as I had seen in awhile - a person that made you want to watch the game. I hope he gets things together. I also hope that Adam Miller is working on being a point guard, because there are no 6'3" combo guards in the NBA (and that is his listed height, so likely an inch or two shorter).

Who would have thought that Podz would be the former illini having the best year? Though not sure which college team Jalen Coleman-Lands is on this year /s

Podz is putting up some killer stats: 19 PPG, 8 rebounds, 47 field goal% https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4709138/brandin-podziemski
Tevian Jones is doing pretty well too: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4397000/tevian-jones

Miller and Curbelo are both probably regretting their destination right now. But they can't transfer again without sitting a year, and Miller has already sat a year and used a non-COVID year redshirt. They both could have been useful players here, as Miller is a better shooter than his stats are showing, and Curbelo is still a capable playmaker and we lack that "true Point Guard" for our offense, but both have limitations and you'd think by now would realize that it wasn't Brad Underwood holding them back.

We need a culture of guys ready to buy in on a multi-year level and accept their own limitations a bit more. Shannon, Mayer and Dainja are our three best players this season, imo. However, I'd like to get to a point where we aren't relying on incoming transfers every season in order to find success. Transfers are VERY hit or miss (as LSU sees with Miller), and if you don't get your top guy (for us it was Shannon, who was very close to being a Michigan Wolverine), you might be in a world of hurt.

Kinda tired of people blaming Curbelo's arrogant sense of untouchability on a concussion. Time to stop defending his actions. the kid needs to be held accountable.
Cool. So you understand how brain injuries impact personalities? What kind of work have you done on it?

Cause here’s what medical professionals have to say about it.

Not sure how you can watch Andre jumping into Underwood’s arms at Ann Arbor and seeing how he’s acting now and not get that something happened to him.

He could ask the same question of you. Are you a neurologist? Looked at any of Andrea's medical records? No, because none of us have. I think people are just tired of hearing about the issue on this board ad nauseum. He is no longer an illini. Wish him the best, thank him for his time here.

Curbelo was always the same guy, emotionally tempermental and prone to bad decisions. We hoped with age and experience, those things would go by the wayside. I think that's still the case, but he's running out of time and you don't want him to realize it as a 27 year old on a 2nd Divison European Team.

I dunno what him jumping in Brad's arms and stuff has to do with it, yes, he was more happy and on better behavior when he was playing well. That's all pretty normal. It's how you act when things are going poorly that's a true sign of character, imo.

The Curbelo situation is sad. Something tells me that is a kid that won’t be playing basketball in a year or two.

There are four kinds of roundballers.

One is... a great talent that develops into a greater talent.

One is... an average talent that stays an average talent.

One is... an average talent that develops into a greater one.

And another is... a great talent that can never develop that talent fully.

Three of these outcomes are fairly easy to understand. The fourth one is the puzzler and the most disappointing.

And the reasons for that outcome are many. And the most frustrating for all concerned. Potential that is lost and dreams unrealized.
