I may have worded it poorly. Meant evaluating his place on this roster.

Who was he going to play in front of? Plummer? Trent? Damonte? Grandison? Curbelo? I don't think anyone would say yes.

Then you look at his fellow Fr, he didn't perform nearly as well as RJ or Goode. Just looking at 3 pt shooting, RJ shot 60%, Goode 37%, Podz 23%.

The answer is simple: personal improvement + massive increase in opportunity = success

If he were still here, we probably wouldn't have one of Mayer or Shannon. Would an improved Podz be worth the loss of one of our top 2 scorers? Would Podz be blocking shots like Mayer? If Underwood had a crystal ball I could see the answer being yes. Podz scoring 10 ppg could be better for the program than Mayer scoring 12 ppg since Podz would be here the following year. He probably would have taken a lot of Goode's and RJ's time given RJ's struggles and Goode's injury. But I don't think Underwood has a crystal ball. No way he could have known Goode would get hurt, RJ would struggle, and Podz would explode. He saw a redundant piece to RJ and Goode, who played much better as Fr and the opportunity to get guys that would lead the team in scoring. It was the right move.

The right move doesn't always work out. That's just called life.

Who knows what happened but it is clear as day that the Illini could use Podz. His stats are nuts. 44% from 3. Averaging 19.7 and 8.1 rebounds. Man, could we use that this year.

Let's be real.....those numbers wouldn't be the same playing night in and night out in the B1G

Well they recruited him hard out of high school so is it really a missed eval? Also if you watched him in practice last year his turn around this year would be shocking. Kid got ate alive in practice last year.
This. Podz looked like a walk on in practice. To say the staff is surprised by the year he is having is an understatement.

Kid always worked his !!! off, so good for him.

9ppg and 3 reb a game would be good numbers if he was still with Illinois. Would've taken/earned minutes from Goode and RJ.

Which would put him as the 3rd guy off the bench for us. Not exactly earth shattering, nor worth all the hand-wringing.

He's in a system (and playing against competition) where he's thriving. Would that translate to this system, this roster, and this conference? We'll never know, but for me this whole thing has gotten old and turned into a drinking game. Everytime someone whinges about losing Podz, chug a beer. I'll be drunk all day.

Plus playing against Plummer, Trent, Damonte, Grandison and Curbelo everyday in practice made him WCC ready after another year of growth.

Being the first player in the gym every day as was reported, if it was true, shows the determination to succeed.

Go Podz...

Logic of extra year of basketball eligibility due to Covid made little sense. I could understand football where many teams only played 2/3 of season and some leagues cancelled entire season. Basketball played full season - only end of year tournaments - conference / NIT and NCAA were cancelled.

We would not have been as good in 2021 without Trent, DaMonte and Alfonso but we would have seen much more development as RJ Luke and Podz would have seen at least 20 mpg. With a returning strong core Brad might not have pursued both TSJ and MM. Maybe just one of them.

I hope neither RJ or Luke transfer after the season. As the Andre saga shows it is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Andre's great freshman season and sophomore injury would have earned him a lot more leeway with Brad and Illini fans. At STJ it is just what have you done for me since you arrived.

Assuming no transfers out I am very excited about our 2024 core team

-Juniors -RJ Dain Luke Brandon
-Sophomores - Jayden Sencire and Ty
-Freshman - Nico, DJG, and Amani

I would expect Brad would sign at least one transfer and one more freshman in the off season

Of course Coleman coming back for his SR year would be a home run!

HIghly highly unlikely.

Here are a few NBA scouts that may beg to differ, two got Podz going at 40 to Okl. City, another at 45 to Denver and one at 46 to Memphis - citing his shot making ability, creativity, versatility and runner touch as among some of his appropriate skill sets. Podz is pretty much included right around Hawk and TJS on most mock draft boards....here's to hoping they all make some serious $$$$

And let’s look at Shannon’s AVGs here…..he would average 35-40 at Santa Clara

In the comment threads about Podz on twitter, I've seen several people in multiple threads implying that teammates didn't really like him last year. I've never seen that implication anywhere on this board and it didn't seem to be an issue when last season was going on.

Any truth to those rumors or is it just randos online trying to make themselves feel better about Podz having success somewhere else?

I'm no insider, but I would imagine the Twitterati has no idea about Podz' chemistry with last year's team. Lots of sour grapes to go around.

I don't believe those are NBA scouts. They are writers. Similar to the guy who had RJ going in the second round before the season began. There's a ton of buzz that happens for players that fizzles out when the tapes are looked at and combines happen.

Hope Brandin gets to the league because he seems like a good guy. Wish he was here right now because all but certainly he'd help. But I think plenty are overrating him. Which is pretty much what we do with anyone not currently playing for us.

It's almost as if they are looking to get people's attention and are willing to trade some credibility for views. Unreal

Yeah, and RJ "never misses" in practice. 😁 Rarely, but sometimes practice just doesn't correlate to real action. Podz obviously wouldn't bring putting up the same numbers, but to quote Underwood again, "it's nice to see kids get rewarded for the hard work they put in." (Even if it is at another school.)

Alex Legion and Marc Davidson (RIP) were legends of practice too.

Lol, don't leave out how much we overrate the fellas still in O&B! Especially during preseason!

.....Red Storm junior guard Andre Curbelo was out for a third straight game due to a coach's decision. The Illinois transfer is averaging 9.6 points and 4.5 assists per game. He also was held out Jan. 3 against Marquette.....

Sad outcome for Andre. I wonder if he will be transferring again.

#675
If he transfers again he has to sit out a year if my rules knowledge is correct. He might wait to see what the coach situation at SJU is first, as Anderson is hanging on by a thread right now. I won't be surprised if he signs with a pro team somewhere and moves on.
