I'm sure we would be a bit better if Curbelo was here, but man, its kind of refreshing to not have to deal with that roller coaster this year.

Really interested to watch him against Iowa State this Sunday. I for one think the concussion had a lot more impact on him than we understand.

Given that, I think of this as his second year playing P5 basketball and he is in an environment that is less conducive to development. Maybe he would have had a come to Je**s meeting with BU like the one that seems to have focused RJ

Our coaching staff and conditioning regimen are light years ahead of St John.

Interesting how much traffic this thread gets when we always had defections but never a thread for their post Illini lives.
I guess the portal is part of it, but maybe some remorse on some of the went away, got away and got sent away the last two years ?
In my 20+ years of following the team, we haven't really seen high impact players transfer away from the program. In the olden days, when a player transfered, they would leave for a smaller program because they were buried on the bench at Illinois (or occasionally because of a coaching change). We had no real emotional connection to them. Contrast that to today and we have three former starters playing for other P5 schools.

I don't know if remorse is the right word. Personally, I hated to see
AM and AC leave. But I don't lose any sleep over it. Might be different if we hadn't replaced them so quickly and effectively.

With November ending, thought it might be interesting to check in on the former Illini players who are still currently playing but for othe schools. Just using the list OP had along with the those mentioned early on in thread.

BBV (South Carolina)
6 g — 21.3 mpg — 3.7 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.2’apg

Andre Curbelo (St. John’s’)
8 g — 29.1 mpg — 12.0, 3.3, 5.6 — 2.3 spg, 3.1
TOpg
Shooting 40% from 3, 50% overall
Flirted with triple-double in latest game (Long Island U) — 18 pts, 8 rebs and 7 assists

Jacob Grandison (Duke)
9 g — 18.2 mpg — 5.9, 3.0, 1.2
Has 3 games when played 10 or less minutes. Duke is 1-2 in those games (albeit against Kansas, Purdue, Xavier).

Jermaine Hamlin (EIU)
7 g — 10.4 mpg — 3.0, 2.0, 0.0

Tevian Jones (So. Utah)
7 g — 30.1 mpg — 21.3, 4.1, 1.0
Had 25, 6 and 1 in 6-point lost to Kansas

Adam Miller (LSU)
7 g — 33.6 mpg — 17.7, 2.3, 1.4
Shooting 41.1% from 3 and 47.7% overall
Had probably best game of season against Wofford last time out — 38 mins, 26 pts, 4 rebs, 1 block, 2 steals, 6-9 from 3 and 9-13 overall

Omar Payne (Jacksonville)
5 g — 24.0 mpg — 8.0, 5.2, 1.0 — 2.0 bpg
Best game of season has come against Voorhees University (HBC in SC) — 17 points, 10 rebs, 2 assists, 3 blocks, 1 steal. Had 10 and 6 against UAB last night.

Brandin Podziemski (Santa Clara)
8 g — 35.4 mpg — 19.8, 10.0, 2.4 — 2.4 spg and 2.1 TOpg
Shooting 38.6% from 3 and 45.7% overall
Cooled off a bit since torrid start. Had 19 and 10 in OT win against Wyoming last night.
Nice work, much appreciated.

I think if we only had one of Skyy or Jaden the loss of Andre would have been huge. Luckily Brad and co. have us rolling with recruiting.
How often do 2 freshman pgs on the same team immediately hit the ground running at the NCAA level? Phenomenal job scouting and recruiting by our staff, and a little dash of good luck, make Belo look expendable, but it very easily could've gone another way.

Illini would not be as good with Curbelo because he had to have the ball in his hands too much. The ball movement is much better with this group. I wouldn't trade Epps or Clark even up for him
As much potential as I truly believe Belo still has, and that's a @#$& lot, I can't disagree with that. The highs may have been higher but the lows could have been really low. Both freshmen have been very, almost surprisingly, steady and with the rest of this roster, that's really all we need.

Tevian Jones in what has to be his 30th year in college is killing it.

It is still early but so far an incredible mix of scouting/coaching with some luck mixed in for this to have worked as well as it did. Skyy n Epps show poise/control beyond their years and as important very willing/competent defenders.

It will be funny when Curbelo has a frustrating game this season...the haters will come out.....he doesn't play for us anymore....good luck for his future...

No kidding. Just happened to notice Kylan Boswell over at ARI averaging 1.7 pts on 23% shooting in 12 mpg. In case we want get into how much more competition there is at G at ARI, I took a quick look and he's playing behind Kriisa and a couple xfers (Ramey who was 4th scoring option for TEX last year and Henderson who played at Campbell U).

I'm not following Boswell at all. But I do keep an eye on Jaden Schutt getting 7 mpg and only seeing the floor in 3 games so far.

Should have stayed home Jaden, we could certainly use a shooter. I'm still willing to welcome him in if he decides he actually wants to play in his college basketball career.

I think a lot of Boswells struggles are due to having a foot injury all summer and zero practice with team before season started.

I'll take a WAG - Schutt ends up finishing his career at Northwestern.

After seeing the leap that Bates has made from year 1 to 2, I am wondering if any of these guys should make that jump to reclassify.

Belo time tomorrow vs ranked competition

Red Storm men’s basketball team to square off with Cyclones at Hilton Coliseum on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN2

Curbelo would make us better on paper but I’d rather not deal with the extreme highs and lows. I still think we’re more stable with Coleman running the offense and letting Skyy gradually figure things out.

Just to be clear, I am neutral on Belo. It just seems the thread started out as a Belo good, Belo bad discussion and has cooled off, and this is the first opportunity this year to see him in action against a BIG quality, ranked team.

Then, if desired, we can restart the whole Belo discussion based on recent, relevant information.😊

I don’t miss Curbelo at all. Wish him the best and hope he has great career at St John’s and beyond — and wouldn’t be surprised if he did. I just don’t know how well he would fit in the offense being as ball dominant as he was. I know people will say with his talent and not having the injuries he had last year, of course he would fit and team would be better. But I kind of like seeing the evolution of CoHawk, and am looking forward to seeing the development of Skyy (who likely wouldn’t be here if AC was) and Epps.
