I love this staff and have no doubt that they went the way they did with Tev for good reasons, but man. He is the one guy I dream on. He really gave us something we didn't have a lot of before Shannon and RJ got here.
I haven't seen any of his games this year, his issue is that he is a high volume scorer that is always looking to shoot and (at least coming into this year) tends to be a liability on defense. I don't really think he'd be a good fit with Illinois TBH and think he made the right decision to play for a mid-major for the type of game that works for him.

Moving on was probably a win-win for both parties, but do hope other Illini share his fondness for MSG as a shooting venue.

I don’t miss Curbelo at all. Wish him the best and hope he has great career at St John’s and beyond — and wouldn’t be surprised if he did. I just don’t know how well he would fit in the offense being as ball dominant as he was. I know people will say with his talent and not having the injuries he had last year, of course he would fit and team would be better. But I kind of like seeing the evolution of CoHawk, and am looking forward to seeing the development of Skyy (who likely wouldn’t be here if AC was) and Epps.
Always a fun topic, as our house (both Illini alums) is Curbelo-neutral. While we both understand the good and the bad, I fall on the "better off gone" side and my wife falls on the "I miss him so much" side. I turned on the SJ / ISU game yesterday and the very first thing I heard was "technical foul on Curbelo". Had a good laugh at that.

This (and I'm one of the biggest Curbelo fanboys extent). Offenses run so much better when the ball moves. AC is utterly ball dominant. Fantastic highs, but far too many turnovers. That said, I hope he kills it (unless we're playing them).

When I turned it on, it was just in time to see him pick up a charge. To be fair, I also saw him make a nice pass and a steal too. But didn’t see him do much else good.

Andre flashes some Steve Nash Nate Archibald ridiculous ball dribbling and pass thru the lane.

The difference is Steve/Nate were great finishers and high apg. Steve/Nate involved entire team when they handled the ball whereas Andre tends to put his head down and go 1 on 5. Andre has way too many sloppy turnovers. He goes for steal too much on defense. Loves the flashy play over the best play.

Andre is ideal for 6th man role carrying the 2nd unit. He showed his limitations in Marquette game when he failed badly in final possession trying to go 1 on 5.

That being said, he is fun to watch, loved the Illini, and brought us some great wins - at Michigan, Iowa BTT, etc.

I hope he succeeds at St. John but JMO he is best suited to be star of mediocre team.

AC has a great deal of physical basketball talent, but his Basketball IQ, is in my opinion, is very questionable. Your point guard needs to be a coach on the floor....he needs to be able to make quick decisions like......he needs to know when to push the tempo and when to hold it up and run a set play...when to apply defensive pressure and when to just stay between your man and the basket....when to thread that pass to your teammate and when to make the fundamental pass that's not going to be a TO....etc.....your statement "loves the flashy play over the best play" accurately describes Andre Curbelo.....implant Steve Nash or Nate Archibald's basketball IQ into AC and you have yourself a First Team All-American

now if only some of our fans would return the favor...
Am I missing something? Seems like the vast majority are rooting for him. not sure if anyone isn't.

That said, plenty of people are content to not have to deal with the volatile nature of his play. I don't think that's rooting against him. Just adopting a more conservative approach to the game.

No one on this board has said, "I'm rooting against him."

But you can be sure that if anyone ever compliments AC, that post will be followed by one expressing relief that we're no longer subjected to his turnovers, "low basketball IQ", flashyness,, etc... they always "wish him the best" though.

Are these fair points of view? Most of them- yeah probably. But it is interesting how a faction of this board has a weird compulsion to remind everyone of his sophomore year shortcomings whenever he's mentioned positively in this thread.

I am not as allergic to Andre as some people because I think he can be an asset especially when he is now hitting 3 pointers at a high clip. However it definitely takes wisdom to find his user manual. I think St John's is better with him now. I am OK without him simply because we have Skyy and Epps. Like I had my reservation with Hawks but definitely root for him and now he has exceeded my expectations.

There are always overly vocal @holes in society. One sign of maturation is the ability to tune most of them out. I'll always be a fan of his.

Andre has great talent and more importantly for me plays with a joy for the game.

I would have loved to have seen how he developed at Illinois if the concussion had not happened. It appears to still be bothering him (playing with colored goggles).

I hope he has a full recovery and succeeds at St. John. He loved Brad and Illinois but it did not work out.

Checking in on the Illini Diaspora as we approach the end of the non-conference season

Jacob Grandison - Duke (6th year) key rotation piece off the bench at 17.9 MPG, currently averaging 6.0/3.2/1.4 on an efficient .631 TS%. Similar to his time at Illinois, he continues to crush it in the advanced stat Box Plus/Minus (currently 7.7)

Tevian Jones - Southern Utah (5th year) leads the 6-4 Thunderbirds in minutes at 29.6 MPG, leading scorer on one of the highest scoring teams in the country at 19.7 PPG albeit on a fairly ho-hum .538 TS%

Omar Payne - Jacksonville (Sr.) has started 4 and appeared in 5 out of the 6 games for the 4-2 Dolphins where is averaging 24.2 MPG, averaging 8.0/5.2/1.0 along with an impressive 2 blocks per game.

Jermaine Hamlin - Eastern Illinois (Sr.) despite being the starter for the first two games, he's seen a decrease in his minutes and is now averaging 10.3 MPG in 7 games (team has played 9 total) for the pitiful Panthers who are 2-7 and rank 356/363 in the nation in KenPom

Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonck - South Carolina (r-Jr.) has played and started in 7 games and is averaging 21.2 MPG for the struggling Gamecocks who have begun the year 4-4. Averaging 3.7/5.1/2.1 on a very inefficient .410 TS%. His struggles are reflected in the Box Plus/Minus advanced stat where he is a -4.4.

Andre Curbelo - St. John's (Jr.) Starting Point Guard for the 8-1 Red Storm that is averaging 29.0 MPG with 11.3/5.2/3.3 as well as an impressive 2.2 stealers per game. Has 3.2 turnovers per game as well and a TS% of .545.

Adam Miller - LSU (r-So.) leads the Tigers in minutes (33.9 MPG) and scoring 16.9 PPG (he and the 2022 OVC player of the year KJ Williams are neck and neck) on an impressive .635 TS% for the 7-1 Tigers.

Brandin Podziemski - Santa Clara (So.) the clear alpha dog with 35.4 MPG and 20.6/9.6/2.4 along with an impressive 2.2 steals per game for the 7-2 Broncos (who are just barely outside the KP top 100 right now, checking in at #104). He is shooting 41.5 % from three on good volume (5.9 attempts per game) and an overall TS% of an efficient .588.

Take the top 2 and bottom 3 and they could hang with a lot of teams. What a list of 'leftovers' (no disrespect intended) and how far our program has advanced!

yeah, the Formerly Fighting Illini would be a tough team, but they would really need to play around their big weakness in the front court. The other 5 would make for a formidable rotation.

Good for Jacob - different experience playing for Duke. Still less mpg than last 2 years at Illinois
Tevian - right choice to transfer, happy to see him succeed at lower level
Omar- showing not P5 talent
Hamlin - showing not P5 talent
BBCV - showing not P5 talent
Andre - 11 ppg - same stats as at Illinois. I think the concussion is still bothering him. Will get playing time at SJ to work it out. Would have had dogfight for playing time on this Illini team.
Adam - he could have played 2G on this Illini team. Doing well at LSU.
Pods - 21 ppg. Big fish little pound. He could have been in the rotation at Illinois but split minutes with Skyy, Sencire, Jayden , and RJ
