Former Illini in College Hoops

Jayden Epps didn't like getting yelled at or being pushed too hard, so now he gets to be a volume scoring, low efficiency chucker that doesn't get many assists or play much defense, on a power conference team that loses to Holy Cross. Don't know too many high level pro leagues that will be interested in that sort of player but I hope he's happy at least.

Epps just got hurt going up for a shot in the Georgetown- Rutgers game on FS1. He couldn’t walk and went to the lockerroom being helped by two coaches…

Curbelo up to his old tricks:

HATTIESBURG — Andre Curbelo sat at the end of Southern Miss basketball’s bench Monday night, cheering as his team scored, grimacing at a few bad calls and jumping out of his seat to dap up his teammates as they left the floor.

He even took advantage of a timeout in the first half to grab a box of popcorn to munch on while wearing a slick maroon suit and Pit Viper sunglasses.

Curbelo gonna Curbelo.

We all get a chance to choose how we want to ‘be’ in this Life. We make our choices and bear our consequences.

But from a basketball point of view... how Curbelo’s game has presented itself over the years is a damn shame. This guy is flat out unique in how he sees the game on the floor and with some things he can do with the ball. Yes, he is mistake-prone and has always needed to level-off his emotions. But still it’s been a waste of roundball talent from a guy with one kind of a unique game.

And he’s not alone. There is a certain percentage of guys like Curbelo over the years that come along in terms of unique talent that is never fully realized for one reason or another. We've seen a few on the Illini. And that is a shame for roundball fans... and certainly for the player himself.

GT as a team now, 2 assists, 20 turnovers. Epps leading the charge 1&5, in each.
Epps got what he wanted. He wants to be the guy and he'll be the guy on a bad team. Don't get me wrong, Ed Cooley is a good coach and he'll get the most out of him but he takes bad shots, is sloppy with the basketball, and he isn't a point guard despite masquerading as one. He could've been on a winner and instead he'll be on a losing team but hey, he'll get his stats. I guess that means something to some guys

He's on par for his career averages(talking about the first handful of games and not just this one). He's a rotation piece and a role player but I don't think he'll ever become what he thinks he is. But, I understood the reason for transferring and unlike Skyy and Jayden, I think a transfer made sense in this case.

Right now the players we lost don’t seem to be that big of loses. Epps long term could be a good college player but I don’t think he would have done well under BU

Lieb just played 5 minutes in a win against Long Beach State. Not a lot of time to have a standout stat although 4 fouls in 5 minutes is very impressive. 😬

Interesting that Long Beach State lost to ISU by 9 on a neutral court three days after they beat Michigan in Ann Arbor by 8 points.

Been a pretty uninspiring start to the non-conference season for the B10 as a whole... hopefully we can change that over the next couple of weeks.
