If nothing changes, KN will be eligible December 11th, the first day after the end of first semester. He probably would get one or two non conference games and Border Wars game, depending on the schedule. Plus all the B1G games of course.

Better than what I thought. But hoping he's cleared from the get go, of course.

By the letter of the rules, he's sitting til late Dec. He's appealing, but the NCAA hasn't made it's ruling yet. He's got a decent shot, IMO.

Ah, yes. I have had the appeal mindset so the actual rule went to the back burner. Hopefully we'll hear something before everyone's back on campus.

Didn't realize that the semester ended that early. Remember going home much, much later "back in the day"

So I decided to look up how many minutes every B1G team's best player averaged last season. I didn't look at the big guys because there minutes are usually slightly less. I skipped Purdue and Minnesota because I didn't really know if they had a go to guy at guard.

Ferrell - 35 mpg
Valentine - 35 mpg
Demps - 37 mpg
Walton - 34 mpg
Koenig - 35 mpg
Trimble - 33 mpg
Loving - 34 mpg
Taylor - 32 mpg
Sanders - 34 mpg
Uthoff - 31 mpg
Shields - 31 mpg

I think it is safe to say Hill will be playing more than 30 mpg.

Hopefully less heavy lifting on defense as well. At times he was the only one giving max effort last year.

Everyone was giving max effort or they would have been on the bench. Hill was often the only one who knew what he was doing out there though. Big difference.

Congrats to @Malcolmillini21 who has been selected to compete in the Nike Basketball Academy, July 25-27. #Illini

This is a big deal. NBA scouts will be in attendance and Malcolm will be scrimmaging against top NBA and college talent. This is the event that initially put Sam Dekker in the first round conversation. Fewer than 30 collegiate players are usually invited.

He will be eligible at the end of first semester.

In the old days, he would have had to sit out until beginning of second semester.

Good info Greg. Best of luck to Malcolm. He certainly deserves every chance to prove himself.

Lucas will be playing 10-15 mpg. Abrams hasn't played in 2 years; so why should we expect 30+ from him? That's not fair to him, and you're short changing TJL.

I think you are setting unrealistic expectations for a 3* freshman PG in the B1G. 10+ minutes per game means he is producing at a pretty good clip. If he passes Tate as the primary back up PG, that is a very good season for him.

I'd argue that we will win more games if Hill plays less. If Hill plays less than 30, this means we are winning and can have the backups play more and in the process, as others said, keep Malcolm fresh for crucial games. I'm hoping Hill plays a max of 30. If we see Hill playing 35 per game, I doubt there's a Big Dance and maybe not even an NIT.

The '05 team had Brown, Williams, and Head all average over 30 minutes. I don't think we are going to see near as many blowouts or wins this year.

Hill needs to be on the floor as much as possible. There is not enough talent on the bench to rest him for over a quarter of the game.

I think Tate will be a mega-efficient backup. 4-1 A/TO, and 3-5 ppg with most of that coming from the ft line, add a steal, plus a rebound, and it is more than we need. He's by far our best passer and ball handler. I'll be interested to see if the dislocation bothers him on the defensive end which is where Lucas could earn his minutes. We need Lucas ready to play 10-15 mpg just in case TA or JT gets ****

Big ups Malcom Hill!!! Get it, big ups. I can't wait to hear how our potential All-American does at this camp

Why is 10 minutes unrealistic? You're setting the bar way too low

Because he is a 3* recruit who is currently third on the depth chart.

We have three PGs - Abrams, Tate, and Lucas. I don't see any meaningful time having more than one of them on the court at once (definitely not as much time as having none of them on the court). A healthy Abrams will eat up ~30. That caps the Tate plus Lucas time to around 10. Even if you cut Abrams down to 25, that means you Tate's time has to be <5 to get Lucas to 10.

I don't think Lucas is as talented as people like DJW or AJ, who even with all the injuries last year got under 10 per game. You hear a lot of talk about how the game has to slow down for freshmen, and that is doubly true for a PG. Freshman PGs who come in and contribute at a high level are rare. Those that do it from that far down in the rankings are even more rare.

I like Lucas. I think he'll be a solid B1G player, in time. But if you assume a healthy Abrams, I do not see him getting significant playing time this year.

I don't think you want Tracy playing 30 mpg. IF he's fully healthy and close to his production from three years ago , he might approach that, but those are big "ifs."

I think Lucas has a chance to get decent minutes (10+). I'm not predicting it, but I don't think it's terribly unlikely. DJW was playing behind Hill last year, our best player who you wanted on the court as much as possible. In contrast, at PG, there's no huge barrier to getting some minutes.

If he is healthy, I'd be happy to have TA get just as many minutes as MH. If he is healthy, he will be by far the best defender of the three and he may be the best shooter as well, although that is not a very high bar, I fear.

Yea no way Abrams plays 30+, im guessing 25 will be his max. We can't afford to lose him to injury and he will probably only play 20ish the first several games until he gets stronger in terms of game fitness. Lots of mintues for TJL to get some game time at the start and see what he can do. Tate is not much of a barrier to PT simply because you can tell Groce lost some faith in him last year and he just doesn't allow the offense to run smoothly. IF Lucas can provide 10-15 mpg I think our offense will be far more efficient. I think hell battle with Tate for pt but if all is about equal between them TJL should get the majority of the time as he has a much larger chance of improving through the season.

No telling if Lucas will pass up Tate. For all his warts, Tate's an experienced senior. Sure, Groce would love to play Lucas ~10 mpg. It'll only happen if he passes Tate on the totem pole.

Tate being an experienced senior will end up being very valuable.

I agree, but at the same time our offense is stagnant with him on the field at times. If Tate can score about 5-6pts/game then that is a different factor. Unless Tate can reliably get to the basket for 2-3 layups a game and hit his free throws then it will be hard to see him playing significant minutes if TJL is playing well. Obviously if TJL isn't ready then it isn't even remotely a question that Tate will be our back up.

3* doesn't mean chit. Sometimes players develop at a different pace than others. Also, by end of December TJL will be our second option at point, not Tate.

You still think Abrams can provide 30 or so minutes a game? Now that's unlikely. He'll play 25-27 minutes, TJL 10, Tate 3. Think that's the likely hood of the minutes
